Dude, I’m just getting into 6.5cm loading, and this was super helpful. Been loading 308, 556, and 300blk for years. But, somehow, I was really misled by friends on the 6.5. Thanks a lot for the tips

Thanks for the video...I assume you'd tumble the brass after sizing-especially since you lube'd the inside of the case neck. I know its a very broad overview but seems like all the key steps should be mentioned. Controlling headspace, neck tension, and concentricity could be mentioned but not shown. Same with less universal practices like annealing, neck turning, etc. This would be valuable to someone new to reloading. Thank you!

just a little tip. For those who use presses and separate primer tools, Using a small magnet with "L" or "S" stickers helps you remember the last configuration of the press or tool. Great for those who use the Forster Co-Ax press which has "S" and "LS" plates with small and large ends.

Im not sure if you've ever wondered why primer companies store their primers isolated in the package, but dumping them all into a bin like that is asking for issues if one was ever to detonate.

I have always prepped the case (sized, de-prime and trimmed) and THEN cleaned it to remove all traces of lube rather than cleaning, lubing and loading. I'm interested in your comments about going about it in this order rather than the order you're doing it.

Hi! I’m a fan of your channel. Recently reloading 6.5 Creedmoor for my Tikka T3x Tac A1, but have a fundamental question, primers. It’s kind of a split opinion on large rifle primers going cci250 VS cci200. What’s your opinion? Recommend Magnum on some powders?? I’m reloading 123, 140, 147 grains and have R17, Hybrid 100, H4350 and Superformance at home. Kindly appreciate your expertise. Keep up the excellent work!!
@breakintips9896
@breakintips9896 4 года назад
Marcos Cancel I have the same question. He’s not the only reloader that went with a small primer. I wonder why? All of the factory ammo I’ve looked at all has large prime. I see you are using cci primer. Isn’t that like a military grade primer that is a bit hard to prevent bump fire? Is there any advantage of using a hard primer? Thanks

Any responses on this? ALL the guys I know that shoot and home load 6.5 use the Lapua small primer brass.
@johngeddes7894
@johngeddes7894 Год назад
Small primers are safer, and originally, it was recommended to Hornady to go with 58,000 piezo pressure, but they went with 62,000, knowing absolute redline was a little over 63,000. That’s why some want the small primer, but in cold weather, there are known failures with the small primer. The best solution would seem to be a slow burning powder, like H4350 or similar, with the large rifle primer, and going conservative with the charge weight in grams. Start with minimum and work up slowly until good accuracy or max load is reached. There is a favored distance off the lands, maybe .040”, but it varies from each barrel and chamber.

Hello community, Gavin, another awesome video. Thank you. I've watched several videos by you, as well as others. I think I'm ready to start reloading. I own several handguns and rifles that I want to start reloading. It appears the steps are the same however, where is my best source to find information and supplies? For example, I own a 6.5 PRC and I know there are differences between Creedmoor, PRC and Grendel. However, I don't really know the differences. I just know I was told, "Oh, make sure you buy 6.5 PRC because it is different." Any pointers are welcome. Thank you.

I'm old school...I hand load for bolt action hunting rifles with a 1972 RCBS JR2 single stage press. I use RCBS case lube and pad...been using that for over 30 years and never a stuck case....why is this no longer popular for case lube? Would you get a more precise neck by using an expander mandrel instead of the expander ball in resizing die?

I have a .260 browning A bolt micro hunter. The gun has a 1in 10 twist. It shoots factory loads Remington core-lokt 140 grain really good. I had a friend of mine load me up some nosler lr 142 grain with 43 grain w760. Gun doesn't like them. Is the twist in the barrel that's the problem ? If so what bullet and load do you recommend. This is for hunting Whitetails. Thanks
@johngeddes7894
@johngeddes7894 Год назад
Winchester powder isn’t always ideal. Most reloaders claim great accuracy with H4350, and not too hot. Also, you need to know how far off the lands to be. This cartridge is sensitive to that, but every rifle is unique. Your load may be too hot for ideal accuracy.

Can you speak to full length sizing versus neck sizing on the 6.5 Creedmoor? I’m assuming you full length case sized because it is new brass and will then neck size once it’s fire formed in your Ruger Precision Rifle? In general, do you neck only size rounds for bolt guns and full length size for semi auto’s or mag fed calibers/guns?

What about primer pocket uniforming, flash hole deburring, bullet seating depth? Also, neck bushing or F/L bushing dies to prevent excessive working of the brass over a usually crooked expander resulting in excessive run-out and also measuring run-out? Not precision reloading at all just a standard reloading video.

Hey Gavin, are you going any true precision loads for your 6.5 bolt rifle (assuming these are for an AR platform or you wouldn't be worried about SAAMI spec) using fire formed brass and only sizing the neck and bumping the shoulder if necessary? That's more what I load/shoot with my Forster and my 6.5 creedmoor rounds.
@silentbob267
@silentbob267 6 лет назад
A lot of competition shooters full length size for their bolt action rifle shooting. Most articles I have read where the authors have tested full length sizing vs neck sizing side by side saw no benefits in accuracy or brass life with neck sizing only and tended to prefer full length sizing because it mitigated feeding issues.

Joe Jr an RCBS kit is really cheap. It has everything you need basically besides a case trimmer dies shell holder and a tumbler. Hornadys reloading kit is overpriced tbh. You get a bunch of plastic and a crappy scale you’ll change after the first use. Go with rcbs with the balance beam scale. You’ll probably make an initial investment depending on what you get. The lee kit seems amazing and it’s like $130. With dies a cheap tumbler shell holders and trimmer you’ll probably be looking at $300-400. Depending on what to yuse

All of the equipment in this video would probably put you up around $1000 give or take a bit and would be an awesome setup for precision rifle reloading. If money is tight you can get started reloading great quality ammo for considerably less than that. For a beginner on a tight budget the Lee Breech lock challenger kits are good. For a little more money and a lot more capability I would recommend the Lee precision classic turret press kits, they are a lot of press for the money and I wish I had known about them when I started reloading.

You don't bump the neck. You either FL size and bump the shoulder a tiny amount, or you neck size for whatever neck tension your bushing is for, then have the option to run it through a body die if you want to bump the shoulder back after neck sizing.
