In todays quick look review I have another Eduard Limited Edition Dual Combo, this time the latest in the line of Spitfire Story boxings. Although the same set of plastic parts as other Mk V sets from the manufacturer, the Malta theme adds a lot of flavour ...

This is the next one on my shopping list, already have "Tally Ho" and "Southern Star", which I bought because of option "F", Mk. Vc Trop, EP813, Palermo, Sicily, 1943.... The funny thing is that I didn't realise at first that EP813 has national markings in THREE different styles, one British and two American, star with the yellow border and star and bar with the red border! Colourful indeed! 😍🥰😎 The other one that I like is option "B", Mk. Vb Trop, ER318, Termoli, Italy, 1943....its flash reminds me 111 Squadron!

The change between the British wing and c wing was to reflect a change between 2 differing ammo feeds. The b wing Hispano cannon used a drum mechanism for the ammo, and the c and e wing used a belt feed, which could hold more shells - the drum only held 30-40 rounds per cannon AFAIR whereas Belt feeds could hold over 100 rounds per cannon. The bulges were retained on belt fed for the retraction arms of the feed mechanism. This is why the bulges are online with the cannon on the C &e wings but offset outboard in the b wing.

Such a brutal but heroic period of the war. Great aircraft to model 😎

Some other great reference books around - The Fighting Colours of Richard Caruana 2: Malta George Cross; Malta Spitfire Vs - 1942: Their Colours and Markings by Brian Cauchi; Osprey Aircraft of the Aces 83 - Malta Spitfire Aces. I don't have that Real Colours book (yet!) Jen, but I have the RAF Museum Series: Vol 3 British Aviation Colours of WW2 which has a reproduction chart of the MAP Standard Aircraft Colours which is really useful.

That decal should still be useable, i recently applied some small eduard decals without carrier film(by accident) and it worked fine.

Wan! Never heard a review describing a colour as that before!👌

Thanks, Jen, a fine, comprehensive review. As I understand it, the function of the brass hooks was to snag the rear of the slipper tank when jettisoned to ensure it tumbled away. Apparently, due to their aerodynamics, they tended to "float" along underneath the fuselage otherwise.

Thanks for the info John!

Nice to have your opinion on the colours of the Maltese Spitfires! 👍 A long time fascinating subject for me. I am fighting myself not to buy this kit... 🙂 Not sure yet if I'm going to win.

Can’t help thinking that Eduard have scored bit an own goal with their decals. Seen comments from quite a few modellers who are deterred from buying what are great kits because of them. A bit alarming to see the carrier film peeling off in the box!
@JenesisDesignsandModelcraft
It's very hard to stick up for them when they do that to be fair. But yes, given that the raison d'etre for these sets is essentially the array of markings included I think you have a good point.
