Sony has just announced the a7cr. This compact and lightweight camera looks like an APS-C camera but actually has a 61-megapixel full-frame sensor inside.It is in shares many of the same internals that you get with the a7r5 I reviewed that camera and found it to be impressive. Using the new 7CR I found image quality is excellent along with very good autofocus and tracking. You get 7 stops of IS, 4k 60fps, and new to the a7c lineup - dual dials for better manual control.

Am I the only one who thinks making these full frame camera bodies so small is kind of silly? The vast majority of lenses worthy of that amazing sensor are big enough to negate anything you might gain from having that small body. I get it for serious landscape guys who hike up mountainsides and shred every ounce possible I guess, but that seems like a small niche of people to me. Nice camera though, I just had to get that off my chest.

A point I had to cut to keep this video under 1 minute is when you have a 61MP camera you can leave some lenses at home and rely on cropping. I agree - not everyone wants a smaller camera but there is a decent audience, especially among general travel and video folks and to offer something this small and compact that can do great video AND 61MP stills - well you might be able to travel with just their lightweight 24-70 f/4 and be quite happy.

It does come across as gimmicky, and its ergonomics leave much to be desired!

Yes, it’s just you… 😆 For travel / street type stuff it’s a dream form factor. Light is good. Also, it gives Sony a nice competitor to Leica’s super-popular Q3, when paired with a small prime. Ergonomics are much nicer than the a7c… I had one of them and ended up selling it - now have the a7cr.

@@krishisel5316 I mean, if your complaint is ‘why don’t they make this bigger’… well the whole point of it is that it’s a small version of the a7rv - so just get that instead! 🤷‍♂️
