Quick Release Transom Trolling Motor Mount

Aksmaniyak - DIY Kayak and Boat Modifications

This video illustrates the modification of a standard type transom trolling motor mount into a low profile quick release mount for a kayak. This tutorial used a Newport Vessels mount and some other brands may require a bushing installed in the locking unit to reduce any slop with the new pin.
Parts:
3/8 x 4 1/2 inch hitch pin.

Update: 3/8/22
I modified a Minn Kota C2 30 Endura using this method. The hitch pin fit snug and did not require a bushing.

Great video! New subscriber after finding one of your many informative uploads. Many thanks for the details, careful explanations and good camera angles. Fitting a small sailing dinghy with a trolling motor and nearly all your mods and fixes apply. Lots of YT time ahead digging through your channel. Cheers.

The center flutes make the center of the 3/8 stock pin bigger. For optimal fit it's best to install a bushing in the center locking assembly that gets removed. I got 1/2 OD 3/8 ID bushings at lows and installed in the center pivot/Locking mechanism. Eliminates any play and slop.

@Aksmaniyak 2 года назад
This set up uses a Newport Vessels bracket and there is no slop with this pin. I'm not sure if there is with other brands.

@@Aksmaniyak I used the Minn Kota and I had a lot of trouble getting it to be slop free, I ended up ordering a 3/8s stainless pin from Macmaster Carr that fit much better than the ones from the hardware stores and combined with the bronze bushings it's super tight and has no play or slop at all. The ones form the big box stores or Amazon are just a tiny bit under 3/8.
@BassManStrikes
@BassManStrikes 2 года назад
@@Aksmaniyak I know some other folks have drilled it out to 1/2 inch and use a 1/2 inch pin and that works good as well. The flutes on the newport vessels one look finer and smaller, the ones on the Minn kota are really big.
@Aksmaniyak
@Aksmaniyak 2 года назад
@@BassManStrikes Yes, there is a big difference. The NV flutes are smaller and uniform across the pin.

How did you use a pulley system to raise your NV motor. I have 2 pulleys on mine and its so tight of a fit on my trolling motor bwtween the bushings and shaft. I have to take out the bushings that that support the motor shaft to be able to lift it. Then theres slop around the shaft and bracket.

How is it attached to the Plate? And do you think this will work on a 14 ft boat?
@Aksmaniyak

The kayak had 4 molded in nuts. All I needed to do was insert the bolts. I don't know if it would be strong enough on a 14 foot boat.

Why would you need to cut off the tabs with the screws. Couldn’t the same thing be accomplished with just the hitch pin. Especially when using the Newport vessels mount.
@Aksmaniyak
@Aksmaniyak Месяц назад
If you used both the pin and stock clamps it would not be a quick connect.

I've tried this and love the simplicity. I have a problem when tilting the motor on the water. Why does it flop around and rest in a backward position? Then when I drop it the foot steering cables are unable to turn the motor and I have to reach back with a paddle to spin the motor. Any insights? TY
@Aksmaniyak
@Aksmaniyak 3 месяца назад
Thanks. Yes, I have seen that. If you look at my double pulley impact resistance video, I tie off one end of the lifting cord and it stops the rotation.

Great video! Are you using the motor release to change the angle of the motor or are you relying on when the motor is powered that is enough to keep the motor in the down position? Hope this makes sense.

How many pound thrust trolling motor u recommend for a 100 lb 13 foot kayak

I just bought a Newport trolling motor for my kayak. Curious if you think I could fasten the Newport Vessels mount, with your modifications, directly to the kayak without the need for the mounting plate?
@Aksmaniyak
@Aksmaniyak Год назад
I don't think that would be a solid enough mounting. The NV mount modification uses only 3 bolts.

Hello. First, a quick thanks to all your videos. You’ve been a tremendous help. I’m in the middle of adding a Newport Vessels kayak trolling motor 55lb/thrust to my Wilderness systems Tarpon 120 complete with the Pwm and remote control (all thanks to your videos). Was hoping to get some input if you have the time. Due to the Tarpon’s odd shaped rear, I’m having trouble figuring out how to build a transom, or if I should mount the bracket to the yak with the quick release, like this video. Either way, I’m not sure how to attach it to my tarpon’s odd shape. Any ideas?
@Aksmaniyak
@Aksmaniyak Год назад
Thank you and I'm glad to have helped. You could try using T tracks with shims under them. It may work. I have never owned a Tarpon 120 so I had to look at pics.
