What most people don't know is that the LX570/Land Cruiser are some of the most over-engineered machines on the road today....Over-engineered as in they go 200k+ without ever having to replace a bushing or tie-rod. They are still made in Japan and represent what made Toyota a game changer back in the late 80s and early 90s.
I am just kinda sad they don't do more performance vehicles. If this had a sport version - it would sell like candy. Even the normal LX is not available in some European countries.
The LX570/Land Cruiser go through somewhere between 3x-4x the amount of quality/point inspections of any other Toyota/Lexus product. They do treat these as the pinnacle of their respective lineups. My neighbor has a LX470 with 350k+ miles now, he swears by that truck.
I'll jump in with a reply ....Highlander is an excellent choice! I'm the original owner of a 2013 Highlander Hybrid Limited with 125+, 000 trouble-free miles. Handles like a Camry, get's combined fuel economy of 27mpg, and the list is long but off the line it can hold its own against many premium CUV's/SUvs (Rx, Q7, Gx, Qx60 Hybrid, Cayenne, Explorer, Grand Cherokee, X5). It's really satisfying the instant torque I can get from the electric motors. Top speed of 125mph the highlander is an absolute sleeper in its class. I was the original owner of a 2002 Sequoia Limited and sold it for $15,000 in 2013 w/ 115,00 miles to fund the Highlander. Was watching this video because I'll be in the market for a Lexus LX 570 in the near future. I've owned many makes and models of domestic and import vehicles but my hard earned money likes Toyota vehicles for their resale and reliability. On that note I still own a 1997 4Runner limited that I bought 2nd hand with 150k miles and as of 1/26/2018 it has 325K miles on it and drivetrain and powertrain are all original. I'm sold on Toyota reliability! Good luck with your choice of next vehicle my friend!
Fun fact: The Landcruiser platform that the LX is based on was in R&D with Toyota for five years before they released it. The engineers put it through the ringer in all kinds of terrain and climates, refining the design before finally putting it on the market. Possibly the last vehicle that will ever go through such an extensive design timeline.
M M And this is why Toyota/Lexus have earned their reputation for reliability. Anybody can shit out a truck platform, but it seems only Toyota has the patience and foresight to spend time and money developing something for years with no intention of releasing it until it is ready.
It depends what you want out of an SUV. As a sturdy "truck" you can tow with then yes Landcruiser/570 is a better choice. In terms of a modern "suv" (tall car) I think the German car-based suvs are more livable and efficient.
Most American folk can’t seem to wrap their minds around the LX and LC as they are stuck on Escalades, navigators and the like. But why pay $100k plus for a Cadillac that won’t be reliable nor will it give you resale value? The Toyota lineup does everything you need and does it well, all in a bulletproof package.
But in all honesty, the new 2018 Navigator is a better car than this assuming you won’t go off road with either car. Plus Lincoln has a good record for reliability. In fact, the previous generation Navigator was very reliable. It’s hard to say what it will be like with the new one though considering how much more technology is implemented in the new one over the previous one, but assuming it is as reliable, it’s the best luxury SUV in the market.
I kinda glad that people here in the U.S. dont buy these LC or LX. I like the rarity of the vehicle. Think if everyone bought these you think over time these vehicles will not have the nostalgia like it have now, thus resale would not be the same. Also people dont have the same taste. Dont forget, that front grill a good sum of people think its hideous. I like Toyota's SUV's and I can honestly say that third row in the LX and LC is a deal breaker to many people. It cut in to storage capacity, and too small. I believe the Nissan Armada has a better third row. Then the button for the automatic tailgate is in the wrong place. It should be on the bottom back pillar where the third row seat controls are at, not on the tailgate itself. Because majority of the people that drive these things are house wives and soccer moms
I have an LX470. Bought it at 45.000 miles (60k km). Now has 270k km (150,000 miles). Oil is still clean after 6,000 miles( the service interval). Needs a ball joint. Have been through the toughest terrain in Australia with a 1600kg camper on the back. Rocky River beds, Deep sand (river, roads and beach), Finke Track (look that one up!), deep fast running water, large rock climbs, desert, icy roads, snow and slush... Have replaced the front seats skins and other than that it has been routine servicing bar one modification: a decent set of headers and a 2.5inch exhaust. Adds nearly 20% power/economy. The torque improvement is probably even more. can get 13-14l/100km on a highway cruise. Uses 20/100km towing a massive camper trailer. The standard exhaust is total rubbish. Car comes with full locking diffs, adjustable height control, 2 air cons, a fridge, great stereo and is just awesome. Am considering the upgrade the LX570 to keep me going for the next 15 years.
I love this vehicle... It is incredible. Blows any Range Rover into the middle of next millennium. Sure, it's just as expensive as a Range Rover but unlike with a Range Rover, you actually get what you pay for with a Lexus.

They also need to figure out how to design a front end that doesn't look like an alien's asshole, and design a liftgate that's one piece and 3rd row seats that aren't a PITA to set up or put away.

Well Land cruisers are designed to last 25-30 year by toyota designer...... not many cars are build like that today. If reliablity is your thing, look no further.
Terry Chao ok, only an absolute moron would take a Lexus off-roading. That is NOT what a Lexus is for. I would still rather drive a car that's never left the road as opposed to a car that's been God knows where, if I was buying preowned. Lexus owners take far better care of their cars than Toyota owners in general as well.
Corner Booth Games What are you talking about? You absolutely can take this Lexus off-road. Owners don't because how much the price tag is. The frame and suspension can handle off-road climates with relative ease.
I have two of these cars and they are very good for going off road and the one in the video is a 2016 or 2017 but they are very good and reliable for daily uses
How you like it between the Lexus LX and the Toyota Land Cruiser? IMO the 2016 - present model year of the LX got more of a city luxury SUV look on it instead of the capable 4×4 off road truck because they added the new extra large grille on the front end....

I really wanted to see under this thing with Turbowski. The only improvement would be optional diesel. Otherwise great vehicle for neurosurgeons who have to get to work through floods and blizzards.
The stiffer suspension modes are useful for towing. It tightens up the control of the load. I have a GX and this is covered in the manual under towing.
I own this vehicle, you want Sport+ for better turns than comfort mode as well as getting on the highway. The peddle shifters are good when you're doing engine breaking down a mountain road. The cargo space when you own the 3 row is worse than it was in my GX which is unexpected when you consider the size differential. However, overall, this is a great SUV.
I noticed at the end you were flogging it around a little bit after you got used to the paddle shifting. Much like using a clutch, you will have to "gas-off" during the shift and it will work very well. When you're towing that big power boat behind, you won't want to be eating through your double clutch that will give you faster shifting. Anyway, a lot of people are complaining about the price. Have you looked at an Escalade which really is just a pick-up truck? This truck has a proprietary frame and body. It has a drivetrain from the trans back that is not shared with anything anywhere. And then, somewhere in there, you are going to have to charge for reliability. There are other manufacturers in this field that can't spell reliability. That "reliability" will always be at the forefront of your mind when you look at this thing. If you bought one while your child is a toddler, you could very likely send them off to college in this thing. Doing the math, you could have instead been driving around in three $31,000 cars since they were born and on your way to paying off another car by the time they are in college. Meh!
Despite being more expensive than the Land Cruiser, Lexus sells about twice as many of these as Toyota seeks LCs in an average year. Both are rare, but the Land Cruiser is considerably more rare. However, if you pay attention, you'll see these, especially older models, all the time. Why? Because they last forever. Personally I prefer the Land Cruiser because it's better looking with better approach and departure angles, despite not having the air suspension. That's the main reason I went with the LC. And before anyone asks, yes, I've already taken it offroad several times, including crossing creeks up to the axles. Here's some considerations: 1. A nicely optioned Chevy Suburban already costs in the upper $70k range or more, which is the actual selling price of an LC. Though a slightly larger vehicle, it's not as nice inside and doesn't ride as well. It also will be nowhere near as reliable. When you can buy one vehicle for the next twenty years or have to buy a new something else every five years because they break down, which is cheaper? Plus, these hold their value very, very well. 2. The true cross shop for this and the LC is really the Infiniti QX70 and the new Nissan Armada. Neither will be as reliable, but both offer similar capability in some regards and both are cheaper. Both are slightly roomier, too, than the Toyota twins. 2. The LC has slightly (1mpg) higher EPA ratings than the LX does, plus it burns regular gas. The LX says it requires premium, but the engines seem to be identical. With premium gas you'll get a little better power, but not much and you can't tell behind the wheel. My LC will actually get about 20mpg on the highway at 70mph without a headwind and a Hershey's about 15-16 in city on regular gas. Aerodynamics kill this thing, so towing a trailer hurts mpg a lot. Without towing, it's actually hard to get down to 13mpg in an LC. This is competitive with other truck based full size SUVs of its era (2008). 3. The biggest problem with fuel mileage is actually the small 23 gallon tank. In other markets they can be optioned with auxiliary tanks. This really needs about a 40 gallon tank to give it some serious range on the highway. 4. They are based on a heavy duty version of the Tundra frame. This is Toyota's pride and joy, their flagship. It is the most reliable Toyota they make. As they say in Australia, if you want to get there, take a Land Rover. If you want to get there and back, take a Land Cruiser.
People who buy this new have tons of money.. their monthly incomes are more than what the median income is for a year. They want the best SUV for everyday driving and this delivers it.

Trust me, I know people who don't make that much more than me who drive vehs just like this. The difference? I'll be able to retire before I'm 75.
Keeping up with the Joneses. Probably 3/4 of people who drive luxury vehicles can't actually afford them without stretching themselves. They don't have their financial house in order and are just adding another liability. I'd never add another liability like that to my life again.
You can have good credit and still be overextending yourself with minimal savings in order to keep up with the Joneses and show off. Finance companies make money off of interest rates (or the money factor) on leases and want people in as much debt as possible. Primarily bad consumer debt. If anything, buying the car lightly used is the way to go if you actually have the means to purchase it properly. You have few other debts, well performing investments, cash savings, etc.
Was contemplating the GX vs the LX for a long time. Went with the GX due to the slightly smaller size and better mpg. The LX is amazing but it's a alot of vehicle to haul around all the time. Both are Lexus Landcruisers, can't go wrong with either
I got a GX a few weeks back and so glad I did. Everything it does, it does so right. Glad I don't have a bigger version of pretty much the same thing. Amazing machine
One of the best reviews I've seen on the LX570. I couldn't agree more with your comments about the strange third row seating placement. I need a lot of cargo space and the seats folded up to the side take up a lot of space. This is what has kept me from buying one of these vehicles. Keep up the good work!
The paddle shifters and the Sport Plus mode is really designed for more better application would be Towing because it doesn't really shift for you all it does is limit your max gear
The Toyota Land Cruiser and this Lexus LX570 blows the Range Rover HSE and the Range Rover Sport out the water reliability is a 10+ I have seen these bad boys with over 400,000 on the odometer and still run like they are new, Lexus SUV and Toyota which is the same motoring company has tested these beast in the most harshest terrain on planet earth the Saharan Desert and the Australian Outback. A lot of Americans hate on any vehicle or SUV that's Foreign like Japanese or South Korean, but the Quality is there and longer lasting parts and reliability, meaning less visits to the dealerships, more money in the consumer pockets. Just look at the most reliable brands they will always be Japanese and South Korean cars, American cars are starting to catch up but still lag in some departments. German automobiles are nice but still doesn't have the reliability of Japanese or south Korean like Hyundai or Kia, when German cars parts go you have to refinance your home to afford to fix them especially at the dealership. British made cars oh lord Bentley or a Aston Martin or Rolls Royce not for your average Joe, who doesn't have the disposable income for one of those handcrafted masterpiece.You have to donate one of your kidneys to get the money to service one of those British beast.

Those finger controls are ergonomic and amazing. It’s a one finger movement to power up and adjust the volume vs. an arms reach and eyes off the road. You can control EVERY aspect of audio right there without looking. Genius; but u need to own it to ‘get it”. - - In your research, I’m sure you saw that “UX” is short for “Urban-crossover” meaning designed for the city. But your test drive expectations and race to 90 mph has nothing to do with city driving. =>Just a grain of salt owner feedback here and don’t change a thing! On a scale here .. People buy them BECAUSE they're conference rooms on wheels. When someone is teleconferencing from an LX, we don't even have to ask. For over a decade, if someone says, "we're in the car", and it sounds as if they're in a living room (a reverb-free living room, with upholstered walls), you know they're either in an LX or a Rolls Royce. The other reason, and the reason why LX are chosen over LS, is because they SUPPOSEDLY offer superior protection against subhumans-on-wheels. Weighing three tons, they SUPPOSEDLY will prevail, when some stupid/drunken/speeding piece of dirt that (not 'who') should never have been born, plows into an LX, in a less-heavy vehicle. I know three siblings who were very happy with IS250s (they each bought one, not once, but twice). But then, one of them produced a baby, and they all moved up to LX, in order to protect "the baby". But I'm skeptical. Are LX really safe? I can't find ANY data, ANYWHERE, on LX. And the only documented wrecks, seem to be in extremely evil places, where people drive insanely fast (LX seems to prevail, but against tiny cars). In those videos, the LX looks OK - for a car wrecked at 100mph - but there is no information on the condition of the occupants. WHY DO YOU NOT COVER THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF THE VEHICLE: QUIET & SAFETY?

You want dependability, capability, and reliability and this is what this vehicle represents. I can go camping and go out to dinner, and not every car/truck can do this. What i've heard is that it's a carryover from the land cruiser seats. They do that instead of folding into the floor like most SUVs so that the car has more ground clearance
If I ever win the Lottery, my first stop will be to the Lexus dealer for the LX. I would get the 2 row seat option. One problem though, now at age 70, I’ve never bought a Lottery ticket yet, wouldn’t even know how to. 😖

I have a LX570 and love it. If a person have to ask why pay the extra money when you can have a Land Cruiser it’s not even worth your time trying to explain it. I love the fact that not every Tom Dick and Harry has one. Why would you want to drive a $100,000 car and every other person has one. It's the worst when you see everybody in a black Escalade.

Cinematography question... at 10:02 with what I assume to be an exterior hood-mounted camera, how do you get it to sway the shot like that? I figure if it was directly mounted to the hood it wouldn't move around. Is it on some sort of suspension system or something? Looks awesome.

I appreciate your truthfulness. I am thinking about getting one. ( I am older and desire reliability and comfort over performance.) The one thing that bothers me is the gas mileage. I will also look at the Q80, (reliability and comfort). I can get a Q with 3 rows for the same price as the Lexus with 2 rows. I don't really need to third row. It is a nice to have not a got to have.
No lift?? is it too heavy????? Also, I feel off-roading is a more appropriate environment for this given the models roots (it isn't a speed oriented truck after all)
its more a road based vehicle . if you want the offroad version . buy the landcruiser prado or landcruiser 200vx these also come with diesel engine which will give you more milage per gallon. you can raise or lower the suspension on this but. yes you would scratch the vehicle.with its overhangs
I have a 2010 Land Cruiser that has the same system for the 3rd row seats and it still works perfectly even tho I have 400000 kms on it, everything related to electronics still works perfectly in the car. You can check Hoovie's Garage's 1998 Lexus Lx470, despite it being old everything still works
In this review, you describe the motor and acceleration as being pretty average, comparing to a V6 but in the Land Cruiser review you said that the 5.7 V8 was one of the BEST things about the vehicle and had ample power.
i'm just wondering why toyota hasn't put the 600h powertrain from the LS on the LX. i mean really, nobody is going to take it off road, let alone tow with it. Indeed the 600h would have not been able to provide any towing capacity, but then again, fuel economy wouldn't have been an issue.
I drove the last gen. extensively for work. City driving was ok but high way driving was horrible. U have to plan ahead for braking, gets thrown around when making turns lastly the gas pedal is like a on/off switch gets tiresome after a long drive.
So let's do the numbers, in general, these are in the same price bracket as the QX80. But every day I see literally like 10 QX80s on the road to like 1 LX570... I wonder why??? If you're spending this kind of money, then we are aware the price is the last of your concerns! But it's like the QX80 is flying out of dealerships hahaha they cant keep them long!
