How about you actually let us play the game rather than watch a in game action sequence where we hit buttons instead.
Seriously...they suck donkey balls through a twirly straw.

David Ramírez Yeah, God of War did start the trend, but I always though the way it felt and the way it was handled was awesome.

I agree with this statement. However... this is the ONLY game that I'm going to allow, carry on with this insulting antic. I might even go as far to allow this in a racing game, for a wreck type sequence or something, due to the horrid play control of some of the better racing games, when you start to slide, and are COMPLETELY out of control. The problem is, is that God of War did so well **financially**, that other game dev companies decided to make this the current standard model for the way games should be constructed now. RPG's are the worst. When I get to a boss fight, that is a clear ripoff of an appropriately designed God of War boss fight, I instantly roll my eyes and go trade in the game, for something else. I refuse to contribute to people having no option to pay full price for such, ( as AOS stated in his video), a fucking lazy ass game experience, with no originality or fun involved what-so-ever. Shame on ALL of you that keep spending $60-$120!!!!!, for games that are ok with selling a 4 hour long campaign mode with no actual boss "fights", just so people will have something to do, if their internet happens to be out that day. Its just awful. I'm going back to Nintendo and PC. I've never seen such bullshit come out of a game, (minus baaaad pc ports, of course), from any NES system, or PC game that was meant for PC in the first place.

They also give you plenty of time to react in GoW as well.

@Tumoxa89 8 лет назад
+Super Gamer61499 They never are. Absolutely never, because it's a flawed concept to begin with. During qte you never thinking "gotta slash, gotta dodge, gotta run", you aren't thinking at all, just staring at the screen and pushing prompted buttons. It's not gameplay, it's not cutscene, it's shit.

I remember getting to the end of Warhammer 40k Space Marine and thinking - "Oh fuck yes. I'm going to be duking it out with a mother fucking demon prince. This is going to be awesome." Then he tackles the guy off the tower and we're just punching him. QTE punching. All the way down the tower. That's literally two miles tall. And the final kick to the balls was the shit ending where he gets taken away in chains on suspicion of being tainted by chaos. So I go through all that, kill literally thousands of orks (I do mean thousands) beat their warboss (a real boss fight, and a fun one) and at the end of the game I don't even get to fight this chaos lord. I just get to wail on him by pressing button prompts. I think that was the first time I ever threw a controller across the room.

Indeed. Battlefield's campaigns shouldn't have any "plot armor" at all. If you've played about a first hour of Battlefield 4's campaign, you aren't able to take out the helicopter with your grenade launcher, because LINEARITY and SETPIECES (genius) I mean why would I only kill the helicopter in a burn-those-madafuckas-setpiece in slowmo!

I like how QTE was employed in heavy rain. Where failing doesn't necessarily restart from checkpoint but can alter the story altogether. Hell, even Turok had a cool idea with it at the end; where missing the button didn't necessarily mean death and hitting the button didn't necessarily mean victory.

heavy rain was an awesome game, it was a unique experience that i actually enjoyed. and that game is one of the most intense games ive played. it submerses you into the characters life, and it scares you at moments because the story can be altered based on a mistake that is made on the QTE. its a good story that you write as you go along, and thats why you want to perform the QTE correctly

The worst QTEs are the ones that are super fast DURING a cutscene that if you miss, you'll die instantly. Resident Evil 4 was guilty of this. One of my favorite games of all time too. But QTEs in that game weren't good. the buttons would change every time you attempt, like running from the giant boulder, AND it doesn't give you enough time to react to the change of buttons. AND THEN there's the fucking Krauser cutscene where you first meet him. I had many occasions where i put my controller down to watch the cutscene, or take a drink from my beverage and then they flash fucking buttons to press in less than half a second. And i missed them, you gotta watch the ENTIRE FUCKING CUTSCENE *AGAIN!!!!!*

Sometimes, Omega, you really should try to widen your opinions. Yes Quick Time Events can be too much, but to say that they suck in every game they are in, that's just.. no.. I can't take an opinion like that seriously^_^ Quick Time Event, too me, makes the boss fight all the more stylish and cinematic, like how you finish off every boss in Darksiders, that sh*t was great to watch and felt f**king satisfying! Btw... who the hell puts down their controller during a cutscene? The game is still playing right? Granted you are not in controll at the moment, but the game is still playing, so don't go and blame the game for your stupidity. If you want a break during a game, guess what the PAUSE button is there for?? :3
@TheDark4light
@TheDark4light 10 лет назад
Thankyou! Man the amount of people Ive heard say that. You dont put the bloody controller down until you are done with the game. Wether that means pausing or saving to continue later you dont put it down. What if you have to run after a cutscene hmm? no qte just running because a bridge collapses and guess what happens you die because you wanted a break. your own damn fault. I swear the amou t of people who apparently want to go take a piss during a cutscene and be fine drives me nuts.

QTE's are fun when it's just a small part of the fight. I.E The enemy grabs you and you have to press a sequence of buttons to break free. But QTEs are becoming more and more overused. Have you ever seen the intro to Asura's Wrath, sure it looks cool, but the gameplay is a snoozefest
@daric_
@daric_ 10 лет назад
I think Shenmue was the first game to make QTEs a "thing" (pushing buttons on command during a game certainly existed before, especially in arcades and the Sega CD days, but this was the first incarnation of "modern gaming" where it was used). If used occasionally (similar to Resident Evil 4), they are not a big deal for me...unless they come out of nowhere with absolutely no time to respond. Sometimes, I would watch a cutscene in a game while eating a sandwich or whatever, then a QTE comes out of nowhere requiring me to respond immediately. After throwing my sandwich across the room to grab my controller, I'm dead before I can even blink.....and I have to reload the game to a previous save point which may result in over an hour of lost time. That is the only time QTEs really tick me off.

I like what Dark Cloud did with QTE. It had diverse combat between all characters and would throw in these special duel cutscenes throughout the game that were easy enough, but super hard to master. Because you can get 'okay' 'good' and 'awesome' by hitting the buttons perfectly and would get rewarded a gem at the end of the duel if you perfected it.

The very same reason, i quit playing Tomb Raider 2013 (that i purchased not very long time ago through Steam for very cheap), it had very good Reviews/Reputations, so i thought, why not trying it out. At first glance, a nice looking, very promising game with good controls and performing well on my system, untill i got to the awful QTE's. I just quit playing the game after a couple of QTE's and never touched it again, it was just awful. It's time to go back to the classics. Thank god, most of the games i play don't have this QTE nonsense in them.
@AlphaOmegaSin
@AlphaOmegaSin 12 лет назад
@W0BN1AR Don't get me wrong there are a few games that can do them right, but whenever a developer decides to basically take tons of shortcuts with a game and put QTE's in every other corner of the game, taking away and playability from the player then that's sucky.
@AlphaOmegaSin
@AlphaOmegaSin 12 лет назад
@vertigofanboy So you're saying you would rather the developer to not take the time to make epic battles that involve tons of gameplay and skill to get through and are quite enjoyable. Instead you would rather them cut corners and have it all play out in front of you while you hit a few buttons when asked too. To me QTE is actually what really takes away from creativity and the overall value of said product

The quick time event at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4 was actually done correctly. Although you only push the same button repeatedly, you feel connected to the character as you are struggling to get move forward. It was much better then simply watching your character crawl or holding the analog stick forward. It was intense. If it happened more then once, it could have been annoying, but for the one time it happened, it was great.

I agree for the most part. QTE's do not belong in action games, RPG's, shooters or the like at all. The only time I'm ok with them is in an interactive story game like Tell Tale's Walking Dead or Wolf Among Us. Outside of that, they have no place in 99% of the games nowadays.

I actually LOVE QTEs when they're used correctly. For most people, it pisses people off, but for me, I think they're fun. Well, "fun" isn't quite the word. It just makes a cutscene where an epic thing happened that much more epic, because I feel like I did that. Sometimes they're just out of place, but they fit in nicely in games like God of War, I think.

I really didn't care about these when they were in action games only, but now of course they're everywhere. In all the cinematic games I love. It totally breaks the atmosphere of the game. To create a good cut scene in a game you have to sit back, and absorb everything, not press stupid buttons for some useless action the character could have easily done themselves.

I think QTEs can be done very well and have been in the past, it just really depends on how they're implemented. I feel like for a QTE to be successful the developer should go at it from angle of trying to make it as intuitive as possible, and also leaving a bit of room for trial and error without it resulting in a straight up game over should you fail. In regards to games like Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls, I feel like that's really just more having to do with creating its own gameplay style, like shooters and turn-based rpgs. Really it should come down to if you don't like that play style then just don't play it. Although I have noticed it's becoming more and more prevalent with new games being released across the board so I can understand the frustration, but I believe if that play style can find its own place to coexist and be implemented well when crossing over, then it's not a big deal really.

I'd say a rare instance of a fun QTE would be the duels in Dark Cloud. There's maybe 4-5 of them, they're about 10-15 seconds long, you're given a warning it's coming up, and it's overall just a nice change in gameplay.

I've personally found that the actual button press QTEs work better in short unpredictable bursts. RE4 has some great QTEs that randomize the button presses, and they are never long enough to break the pacing of the game. Most are like 5- 10 seconds, with the longest being the knife fight. Even that made sense, though, because they were doing things in scene that were just not possible with the game's mechanics.

QTE which is lazy as hell. saints row the third is a good example of that, all this time i thought i would be in a epic boss fight with Killbane by just fist fighting him but no you finish him with QTE which pissed me off and made me disappointed... btw teh melee attacks in SR3 sucks... I enjoyed Jurassic Park the game's story but what really ruined the game is that it was all quick time events since it was inspired by heavy rain... out of all the interesting ideas they could have used from other games like gta and make it into a free roam sand box Jurassic Park game that everyone has been asking for since 4ever, they choose heavy rain...

Unless it happens every 5 seconds like in AC3 where you have to press certain buttons to kill incoming wolves or some shit, it doesn't bother me at all. Anyway, it takes much longer to animate and add code to the massive quick time event cinematic than add yet another fight scene with the standard game mechanics.

RE 6 in a nutshell, cut scene, quick time, cut scene, shoot shit, quick time, cut scene, quick time cut scene....

The way Sonic Unleashed (on the Wii) used QTEs were fine. But in games like Rambo: The Video Game, that's just throwing quality into boiling lava.

I liked the way the mass effect quick time events gave some decisions time sensitivity.

when have developers seen us gamers go "ooh ooh we need MOAR quicktime events!" they dont, so why do they keep doing it?

In Shenmue the QTE's are a tiny part of the game, and occur during cut-scenes (the whole point of QTE's is to give cut-scenes some interactivity), same with RE4, they are sporadic and make sense (in the first Krauser fight its brilliantly used, in the second fight with Krauser they feel a bit cheap).. Where QTE's are offensive is when they take place during actual gameplay, such as "press button to defeat the Ur Didact"), and they are often used by devs to lazy to design proper boss fights.

Quick Time Events can be fun if done right. If they only happen occasionally and only need a few buttons, they're good. However, I don't want an entire boss fight to be QTE.

I think Quick Time Events were in fact started in 1983 with the laser disc arcade game Dragon's Lair. Sega started using them in 1996 arcade game Die Hard Arcade. and there were many more games that used QTEs before SEGA's arcade game.

"It is a good video movie, but not a good video game." This is what I say all the time and you rant about what I loathe most. God of War is my prime example. Games that take control away from gamers contradict the element of meaningful choice like a tactical move or a deliberate attack or dodge. Now I want to learn about your analysis. This video won my heart.

Guys, guys, play some Fahrenheit and get to the 'Indigo Prophecy' level, this game is a king of QTE sequences.

Awesome video, I am still in awe at your massive game collection. Stacks of DS games here, old nintendo games there, you need to do a room tour!

quick time events are just a game developers way of saying " i have no idea on how i could make a decent fighting mechanic" - so im going to spoil the most important part which is fighting - by giving you a qte

I believe that hell will be random combinations of lag spikes during quick time events.

Yeah I hate quick time events too, they ruin the game's pacing, they annoy the players, they cause you to die a lot and they're clearly made by someone that doesn't know how fingers work. For example the type of QTE that makes me Hulk Out are the ones where you have to mash a button rapidly, because they hurt me mentally and physically.

Most hated quick-time event I've ever encountered (in my opinion): Halo 4's final Didact 'battle'. WHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?!?!?! In Halo 2, you actually had to fight the final boss!

the knife fight with krauser quick time event in resident evil 4 kicked ass, in fact all the QTEs kicked ass because it added a sense of horror

Fortunately, QTEs have been toned down significantly over the years (I'm looking at you RE6..) and have been adding or modifying them to have a hold option instead of a rapid press option. That way our hands don't get so tired or our controllers get worn out faster.

Q.T.E.'s annoy me, the only time they really fucked with my emotions WAS in Mass Effect, like "make a decision on who lives or dies" *LT button appears for literally a 100th of a second* "YOU FAILED! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIEEEEE!" The thing that really bugs me are FPS games, there are only two that I enjoy. The world is not enough for N64, and Turok for Xbox360, because they are the only games I've played where the enemies STAY THE FUCK DEAD and don't respawn out of nowhere and shoot you in the back.

The only game I played recently that annoyed me was Dark Cloud. It stops you to do 'duels' or 'ump onto the ship' and those are QTE. Yes, they kind of pull you out the moment.
