Hey Mighty Mechanic, First let me start by saying that I pride myself on how mechanically inclined I am. But this handle removal got the best of me. I just couldn't figure it out. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your knowledge. I guess now I won't have to cut the plastic door panel around the handle anymore to get the door panel off. (Major Donkey Ears for ME) LOL. Kudos MM, You the Man!

BIG THANK YOU! All other vids abt replacing panels omit models with manual window mechanisms! A quick tip: On my 97 Accord, one of the clips was 180 degrees backwards, and it was the easist to remove because I simply pulled the clip from the access point on the handle where one would normally push on the ends of the clip. I reinstalled all the handles with the clips back-to-front, since it's exponentially easier and faster to tremove. ON MY MODEL, at least.

The second you took it off my brain was like “DUH OF COURSE WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THAT.” Came off in ten seconds. Thanks bro.

thank you SO much! it helped me remove the door panel on my dodge dakota pickup so i could bang a dent out of the door! i ended up using a miniature 5.5inch pry bar that had a skinny 90deg bend at one end. the screwdrivers didn't work for me but being able to understand what the situation looked like, i chose the other tool to accomplish the same thing.

Make sure that when you're holding your window crank handle in your hand and it has to clip on it that you don't drop it because I dropped mine and it took me at least 45 minutes to figure out where that clip was and God I was livid! 😅 My window track was completely broken and I almost didn't notice that there was a bracket broken off of it and the bracket was broken and I still managed to fix the window only to drop the window crank and have the clip fly through the air and it was starting to look like a beautiful job of fixing my window is never going to be because of a 2 cent metal clip that I couldn't find so my window was never going to roll up and down well on my car none of the windows will be down except that one so I was almost didn't have any windows at all but now I can roll one down oh joy have a nice day

Thanks! You can also use a thin shirt and slide it under the base of the handle to pop the retaining ring off.

I'm getting a '78 Ford F-150 that needs a little work, I got to replace a door panel and this will be a huge help.

Screwdrivers are great for this, but personally speaking, I usually use the 'pick and hook set' from harbor freight to make it juuuuuust a bit easier. Don't get me wrong, this is super easy, barely an inconvenience; I'm just like that.

Wished I had seen this before I tried to force it out. Scratching the panel in the progress.

I never knew window cranks contained wishbones. My cranks need to be painted/replaced, so this helps a lot. Thanks!

Didn't have luck with the dual screwdrivers, instead used a flat head and a putty knife and it worked like a charm. Thanks for posting this as it gave the base concept for getting that damn handle off.

You can also slip a shop towel behind the handle around the clip and turn the handle to get the clip off

Quick tip: I just removed the clip with one of those free paint can openers you get from Lowes or HD. Seemed to work a bit better than a screw driver as the tip is curved and you can pull the clip straight up from the top with it. Again, appreciate your video as I wouldn't have even known what to remove without that.

If the handle is just coming off that must mean the clip is missing. Does that sound right?

Turn the handle facing up wards to the sky so you can actually see the little metal part.....

You can also use a wash cloth to remove the clip. Just slide it behind the windiw crank and work it back and forth. It will push the clip upwards and you can then pull the clip out.

me and a buddy were just talk'n about this and of all the videos on this topic yours is the ONLY one that deals with that type of handle . . . .we found it odd out of the five s bodies he owns in the same year range 4 of them have 'the other type' of 'washered' handle . . . thanks for having such a well done and thorough video and we just had to ask, just how many times did you do that before you hit record? cause we're betting when we try it on his s body, it won't go that smoothly? hahahahah :)

I used a hook tool and pried the door from the handle, worked great clip shot out tho had to loom forever for it. 2 flatheads prolly work too but the hook tool for me is the way to go it’s kind of shaped like a question mark ?
