Quick Tip: Is an Offset Red Dot Sight Right for You?

Some folks love 'em, some folks hate 'em. Today, Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant weighs the pros and cons of adding an offset red dot sight to your AR-15, so you can decide for yourself. We're talking about a reflex-type red dot like a Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint, Shield Reflex Mini Sight, Holosun, Swampfox, or others on an angle mount next to the scope. You use the main optic for distant targets. When it's time to engage a close-in target, just tilt the rifle slightly to use the red dot.
If your primary optic has a 1x setting, do you need the angle-mounted red dot? Caleb says, "yes." There's no need to break your hold on the rifle to adjust the scope's magnification lever - you just cant the rifle and aim through the red dot. Even if the scope's already at 1x, your eye will take more time to acquire the target through its long tube than by using the red dot. That can make all the difference on a close-range shot you need to make FAST. You do need to practice transitioning between the two optics to get good at it.
An offset red dot frees you to choose a higher-magnification scope than you would use if it were the only optic on your rifle. Division of labor: the red dot handles close-range targets, so you can have more "reach" on your scope.
Putting an offset red dot on your AR-15 does adds extra cost to your setup, plus some additional weight and the enhanced "snag factor" of another piece of gear hangin' off the rifle. With just a scope mounted on top of the receiver, you can shoot the rifle from either shoulder and be able to use the scope. That's pretty cumbersome, if not impossible, to do with an offset mounted sight.
You CAN "piggyback" the red dot on top of the scope, either on a mount built into one of the scope rings or a mount that clamps to the scope tube. The problem is you usually have to raise your head to use the red dot - and you lose your cheekweld on the stock. But this setup is better when you're using the red dot in conjunction with night vision gear (NVG).
If you're carrying your rifle on a sling, there is a risk of the red dot snagging on something. But with a little care and a good-quality optic mounted on a sturdy mount, says Caleb, that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I've done that with my AR, got the idea from Jerry Miculek, if he's wrong then you might lose the argument. I really like the setup, quick up close, able to reach out farther if needed. The only thing I did differently is I removed the pop up iron backup sights. Why the need to have 3 different sighting systems on the same gun? If the red dot battery runs out, can still use the LPVO with no power. Plus my LPVO carries a spare battery that is the same used in my red dot so both the red dot and LPVO use the same kind of battery. Since the LPVO has an etched reticle I almost never use the illumination feature.

Two is one, and one is none. Unless you’re worried about the weight of irons, which is negligible, there’s not really a reason to not have a set. Unless rail space is a limiting factor, run irons.

I run a 20" 5.56 with a Strike Eagle 1-6. One day I had a spare red dot lying around, and a buddy had a cheap offset mount, so we mounted the dot to see how it was. That was about 6 or 8 months ago, and I love the offset dot. I keep the scope at its 6x setting, and use the T-REX Arms school of thought of using the dot as the primary fighting optic, and switch to the LPVO for longer range or more precise engagements. I definitely recommend an offset dot to someone who wants mid to long range capabilities, with the ability to switch to close up stuff very quickly. For anyone who is only going to do close to mid range stuff, I recommend just a dot, possibly with a magnifier.

Same set up. But 18". So that being said I came up with a back up rifle with a Burris ar536 with on offset Bushnell First strike 2.0 on a 45° Truglo pic rail.. The prism comes with pic rails, but it's either piggyback or 90 degrees. Unlike the LPVO I've found it easier to use both eyes on the 5x, like a 4x acog, on the prism for cqb if I can't transition fast enough to the offset RD.

I run an offset red dot on an LPVO and I find that when I am shooting weak side I can actually pick up my offset red dot much easier/faster than the LPVO. It’s probably because of the much more forgiving parallax in the red dot vs the LPVO.

With the optics mounted inline with the rail, your options for a close in / backup sighting system is a good idea, why, your standard hard sights / metal /flip ups are trapped. They have options for those as well, *45 sets. The ACOG has an option to mount on top of the it’s frame as well, same reason but personally I like the off set red dot option too, quick transition .v the top set of the ACOG. Good choice sir, lite weight and a purposeful option. Thank you. Be safe out there. **”Suck it up”, perfect. Your a convert, welcome… *”If not fit your going to die”, wow 2 in one vid, outstanding !

Pros: Eliminates parallax from trying to look through a scope. Allows for fast sight acquisition for up close combat. Cons: Can get expensive. (an offset red dot for up close combat should have good battery life and auto on/off capabilities so it can get pricey) It could be another point of failure if not maintained properly (making sure batteries are up, lens clean etc.) Weight (some mounts are overbuilt to provide durability and end up adding extra weight to the build) Summary: it’s good to have a backup option for close combat and the offset red dot remains a popular option for its efficiency and ease of use. However they can be expensive so if you want a cheaper alternative you can go with 45 degree back up sights

I'm running a Holosun 507C under a Trijicon that is mounted on a Vortex Cantilever. The Cant. allows for the pic offset mount, to mount underneath it and in front rather than in back. I would hate the thing so close to my charging handle. The 507C has some cut outs in the back edges so it allows the Red dot to sit underneath the scope turret (the lighting turret for left handers). I really like the setup, especially further forward, and it still fits on the upper receiver. Being a left-hander shooter with a right-handed AR at 45 degree angles gets hot brass landing in my elbow, and it hurts like hell, so that is the biggest drawback for me at least. The cost of the 507 was pretty much nil compared to the rest of the setup.

I actually just changed to a very similar setup. I had a small reflex that I had piggy back on my LPVO I've since removed it and actually used a Sig Romeo msr that I had lying around and I decided to mount that at 45 degrees to see how it looked and most importantly worked and felt in action! Yes it's definitely a lil bigger and heavier as well but I actually believe it is a more sturdy set up as the msr is basically bullet proof and having something protruding off the side has a potential to snag so aside from that you just need to pay a little more attention that's all!

I like the combo of a lower cost lighter weight 2-10x40 or 3-4x and higher dedicated longer range optics with an offset dot, even with a holosun 503/T2 style dot (which is more durable/weatherproof unless using a closed emitter micro dot) either way the combo is lighter or equal to most quality 1-8/1-10 LPVOs, but with much better clarity and light performance, plus better fast target acquisition (also nightvision capability if applicable) The Arisaka mount is FANTASTIC but Brownells needs the T2 low and high plates for that awesome base mount (which they do sell) in stock! 😉 👍 Great topic as usual Caleb 👏

I got to try this type of set-up on a friend's rifle before I purchased anything and I'd say if you can try it 1st, do it. You may not like it and instead of having to buy everything and finding out that you don't like it, see if you can find someone with this set-up. Nothing wrong with just an LPVO either or just go with a red dot. Choices are a good thing.

I match up the offset Red Dot to my non-dominant eye. This way from a prone or benched position, I can find the Target at distance with my left eye and then see it in the scope with my right eye without having to fish around at 25x. It works just great in CQB too. My eyes are Omni dominant.

Take into consideration that the overwhelming majority of LPVO have a fixed parallax at 100 yards. If you love to hit targets with precision then a 2-10 or other lower mag scope with an adjustable parallax scope is the way to you. The red dot is great for up close 1X fast transition shots. Don’t even get me started on the BDC reticle as they geared to hitting an approximation of a point of aim.

On a 1X it's redundant. On a 3X, 4X, 5X, etc. I can see it coming in handy. With an LPVO on 1X and both eyes open you get used to the reticle being superimposed on your full field of vision for CQB. There is no adjustment time because you're already adjusted. You only need to know where your POI is on the reticle at point blank to say, 25 yards or so, and compensate compared to where you're zeroed. The whole point of having an LPVO is being able to utilize the 1X as a red dot.

I am against canted RDS. Not against, just think they're not needed together with LPVO. Ok, first of all, you need to determine what kind of sight you need. If you're under 100m shooter and you need every little millisecond to be faster, than RDS is go to but then you don't need an LPVO. That's mainly for competition and strictly home defence. But if you want to be more versatile, LPVO will be great choice and yes, RDS is faster but you can be FAST ENOUGH just with an LPVO. All you need is to practice and for that you don't need any ammo. Practice to catch sight picture quickly with your LPVO and you'll be just fine.

the red dot becomes your back up sight, you don't have to use it all the time. I find I can get get better quicker sight picture on the dot if I mount it way forward on the receiver, I use a one piece DD and it needs just a touch of clearance so the off set mount will fit underneath. a tip off magnifier hangs out in the wind more than a dot does. the choice of stock makes a difference in sight picture, try a couple different ones. I use the arisaka mount set at 35 degrees. tacticon armament makes a much less costly and more streamlined 35 degree mount, mines on order. 35 degree tucks in noticeably better than 45, but 45 offers more clearance to scope or mount. I don't mount the dot to the scope, if the scope or mount get fubar, then both sights are foobar.

All depends what you need this for. I hunt coyotes with thermal but this is great to have a nice red dot to use before it gets dark when on stand. Different uses work well. By the way, I'm lefty too. All depends the intentions are...

When I realized you didn't know what you were talking about was when I seen flip-up sights.

This is the way of the future , better than a red dot and magnifier , kind of the best of both worlds , ive got a 1 to 6 with reptillia scope mount that has an aimpoint t1 mount on the top of the mount .

Seems to me that a red dot or holographic sight with a magnifier is for different applications. If you need 8x magnification sometimes like Caleb has here, red dot + magnifier just won’t work. OTOH if you won’t need more than 3-4x magnification, I would prefer to have the larger field of view from an Eotec

Another fellow leftie here I have a good scope for distance and offset buis iron sights for backup or upclose, also running a good Ambi selector and a good Ambi mag release seem to also help alot.

Just took the offset pill. I haven’t put enough rounds down with it to say if I’m a full convert yet.

At first I really wanted to do this. Then I found I spent as much on a burris rt6 and a holosun 507c as a trijicon accupoint tr24g costs with some discounts/sales, and that optic is known for having among the closest red dot performancefor an LPVO out there. I still think it's a good idea, but not as efficient in cost, space/ergonomics at times, but that's the biggest problem with optics in general; there is no free lunch.

Offset is better. I have multiple main optics. Couple t2's, holosuns, lpvo, fixed 2x scope, accupoint 3-9 and couple acogs. I can switch main optics while maintaining a secondary optic which is my offset. If it was piggyback then I would have a very heavy "riser" lol. Btw I dont use irons anymore. So this is just my 2 cents.

If my target is close enough for a offset red dot to be useful, I find it more effective to simply point the gun in its general direction and sight down the barrel. Works great for targets that are 0-10 yards away. The only distance where I would think a red dot might be useful is 10 -24 yards down range. Past 25 yards, the riflescope is superior in every way. Offset red dot sights are great for shooting competitions, But I think they are pretty useless as a backup sight in real life shooting situations.

An interesting video would be Low Powered Variable Optic with offset optic vs optic paired with 3x magnifier that can be flipped to the side when not wanted. The magnifier would probably be the option I would chose but curious what pros and cons of each Caleb could teach us.

An LPVO is not a substitute for an RDS… An RDS has capabilities that the LPVO does not, and vice versa. An LPVO or ACOG… and an RDS makes a good combo for a flexible setup. But there will be compromises made for this versatility, it’s not going to be perfect. I always recommend specializing your build to the most likely needs first. If your needs are most likely going to be close range, 100m being the max, with closer ranges being the most likely… an RDS is the way to go. A full size like a COMP series, not a micro RDS. The full size RDS maximizes the benefits of that type of optic, the micro RDS introduces tighter limits. A simple RDS setup will be faster close in than an LPVO, especially when things go south, or you are otherwise forced into awkward shooting positions, like around corners. LPVOs are just more difficult to use when you are knocked on your back or something along those lines. And the RDS isn’t useless past 100yds. Sure it’s not going to be as precise, but it will get you to 300+m in a pinch. If your needs will be genuinely mixed with a chance for a variety of ranges, an LPVO and RDS is a workable combo. With these small RDS and the trim mounts, you are adding like 3-4oz total weight.
