I used to use Bessy clamps to raise the blocking, but now I’ll use your pro quick tip! Thanks!

Every time I see your videos I’m jealous of the quality of lumber. We get absolute junk in Michigan

what makes you think he has good quality wood? I hope its not because you see the incisions in the wood....souhter yellow pine doesn't need those incisions in the wood like you see in this video

DrDecks, I need some additional information mentioned in your video. This weekend all my deck boards were removed because of spongy spots in several locations. What was discovered......there are two joists that are rotten and all the blocking boards lying perpendicular to the joists are rotten. It also looks like anytime multiple joists were nailed together, the middle spacer board was also completely rotten. You mentioned in your video about waterproofing the framing and blocking boards, where can I learn more about this? Believe it or not this deck is only about eight years old. thanks

I basically have the same question as several others here. How do you waterproof this large solid blocking surface area? Secondly; couldn’t you have just tapped the solid block from underneath with a hammer to make it flush? Inquiring minds…??

My wife thinks I am OCD for making small corrections like that when doing framing work but I keep telling her it all adds up. I was setting some trusses on a hip roof and was off by a very small amount, A quarter to a half an inch, that made putting sheeting on the roof a nightmare.

good tips about using a screw and hammer to level it out and the block prevent the blocking from falling. I had hoped the video would cover blocking for installing 4x4 posts. Currently, I am doing 2x8 on edge then using a basic post anchor, then 4" gal screws down and 3"gal screws into the post. Then I have installed the vinyl railing system - just can't seem to get the sections solid enough where someone could kinda lean on it. It seems to wobble left to right and front to back. Ideas? thanks in advance, t

If you wanted to attach another solid block in the section where you were standing in the video, how do you screw it into the joist on the side where the first solid block is? This is something I will need to do but don't know how to do it, please can you help?

you would not want, or need to do it. The reason he is flat blocking is that he has straight running into angled boards with a 2 board layout to remove butt seam

Why not ladder frame that for the break boards? Better for less water trapping.
@Tyscrat

What about water running off? With a solid block the water will then set in between the deck board and the solid block and pre maturely rot? Am I wrong? Because I’m just curious I’m doing the same splitting middle on my deck
@markhlutz

Yes, a ladder would be much better in this situation.

Isn't this going to trap a lot of moisture under that big flat surface and damage the framing members?

Covers blocking with waterproof tape. The Azek won't absorb water. Dries upward.
