Man, thanks for the tip! I've always had the hardest time getting skates that fit right. I was always one of those who wrapped hockey tape (and more recently skate laces) around my ankles. Of course now like 99% of the hockey community is pretty much screaming DON'T DO THAT, without offering an alternative apart from saving years for custom-fit skates from a hockey shop (and in my area there are none). I can't wait to try this trick out at the rink this weekend! :)

I prefer the skate little bit looser because you can bend ankles little more and make more tight turns. but everybody has their own way to tighten skates. Its cool little trick but everyone uses what they like what feels best for them.
@ruzzcraze1862

I prefer to overlace - that is go into the loops from the top and out the bottom. This allows the lace to get trapped as they are tightened. The downside is that they are much harder to untie and loosen!

Here's a trick that I learned about 25 years ago. I like the skate tight around my instep on up to the ankles, but loose on my toes. My feet are very narrow on the ankle, but very wide in the toe area. I use and old lace and tie the first 3 eyelets with it very loose. Then I use another pair of laces from that point up and tie them as tight as possible. I buy 84" laces for the second part.

i would suggest checking out Ian's shoelace site and his 'Secure Shoelace Knot' aka a double slip-knot. My skates used to always come untied during games from all the pressure of moving and skating, and after learning how to tie the knot, I havent had any problems since. It incorporates some of the points in this video, such as doing the double/triple wrap to lock the laces down on the tongue, and some other things. www.fieggen.com/shoelace/secureknot.htm
