A perfect example of a cash grab but admittedly they went over budget very quickly, studio cut alot and rushed production which if you are so lucky like me to have their first viewing of this film in its original state (that red shield was so visual awful it actually gave me a weird head sensation from staring at it.) The pros of this film are continuing of a cool mythos the quickenings are very well done in this film imo / this scene is a also obvious stand out. Weirdo enough Ramirez death qoute is very well..... Quotable ! And it's intense comedic in nature violence of course. I think it's a fun movie if your watching some of the later remastered, edited, digitally edited versions of today. It makes for a fun movie. I turned my comment into a review at some point but when you looks at what was going on behind the scenes it's a wonder there was more highlander after this. As a fan of the series as a whole ( minus I've never seen the animated stuff. Dabbled in reading some comics.) I'm glad there was and I think the quirks of this film might just be what allowed for that so for it. I enjoy this film :)
@@wrathofscorpiasWhat made this film so awful fans unanimously sees it as "non canon" is that fact they put the main lore that the Immortals are aliens
@@omellemmor4732 oh there is a lot more wrong with the ORIGINAL VERSION. Of this film then that one plot detail lol. But I agree it was a odd and honestly I think just plain lazy decision
@@omellemmor4732 honestly I enjoyed the concept of them being aliens not the that simple fact but because it makes Connors choice at the end sweet in a way. If we go off the whole ziest thing Conor only has two choices one he wins the prize grow old on ziest or die on earth ( funnily in both original and subsequent remasters I don't think the prize is described as being all power being granted, although the edited version it can be implied if you know the source material i.e highlander 1.) Both times Conor chooses to live a normal life instead of being a god or returning to a planet where he is looked at greatly by the common .... Aliens lol. He chose peace and love. (I know wishy washy.)
@@joefunk1611 First movie is just a drama of being immortal. And second movie is a ultra-mega-creative show, with anti-cosmic radiation energy shield, dictatorship, dystopia, alien porcupine-men with winged backpacks, and lots and lots of other crazy stuff. And main hero is immortal warrior with a sword, who helped to create that energy shield, using alien technology, because he's an alien himself. That's a top-tier plot and that's why second movie is the best! PS: Nobody's kiddin'. At least, those, whose childhood were during 80's!
recording data: that entire city was built in the neighborhood of Puerto Madero Buenos Aires, it is no coincidence that the patrol car and the Taxi is a 1969 Ford Falcon, since the 60 and 70 generation of the falcon were also manufactured in La Boca until which was moved to General Pacheco
Imagine being so incompetent a Immortal that even with advanced alien gear, you cannot beat an old mortal and only end up getting your head cut off by a slow moving vehicle so you can juice him up.
Imagine being so incompetent a screenwriter and director that even with a fantastic base film and story to expand off of, you cannot get over trying to reinvent the wheel and give us what amounts to one of the biggest, steaming piles of S*** for follow-up film that has ever existed in almost all of film history.
@@technewsfortechnoobs haha, well said. The movie would have actually been pretty good…if it hadn’t been inspired by the nearly perfect original. In a way it’s a bit like Alien 3, not a good movie, but it isn’t a hack job like some other sequel films.
I don't care how abysmal the fight choreography was and how goofy the whole movie was, when i saw this as a little kid I loved it from start to finish lol! Especially the bird dudes lol
I watched this as a kid having never seen the first one. Thought it was awesome. Watched it repeatedly. I still think it's fun and ridiculous with some good lines. Don't take it so seriously.
It's funny, you can tell by the scope of the quickenings that the assassins have been alive for a long time but the fact that their quickenings don't last as long shows they're lack of experience.
Highlander II is certainly not without major flaws and issues, but it's still got some pretty good action scenes including this one. Sure the hoverboards and jetpacks don't exactly fit into the Highlander world but this is still a pretty badass sequence, and I respect that it was done in-camera with nothing digital. Contrast that with the boring CGIfests you see these days. Corda and Reno aren't liked by many, but I thought they were fun and memorable villains. Despite how dimwitted they are, they're both still pretty dangerous and threatening, and far moreso than the main villain. Katana is a fun villain but he sure is incompetant and a bad fighter; these two actually pose a serious threat, and clearly revel in the carnage they cause.
this movie was such a troll movie you can tell by the giant kiss in the back of the truck! Not only did it try so hard to copy the first movie by adding the two main characters but it went to a new level by introducing some over-the-top facts or details in the cracks of the first movie like: the planet Zeist, sci-fi? Wtf? I will admit that it's much more pleasing to hear this clip in French(I think) than in English. Listening to him call for Ramirez is much better in the french accent.
Those lips are painted on a wall during the scene in the first Highlander, just before MacLeod meets Kurgan in the 80s, between him leaving the bar, and Kurgan popping up, don't know if there is any kind of relevance, if it's an Easter egg, or if the set designer was just a fan of the Rolling Stones (joke)
@@m1lst3r89 First, I can't believe I left this comment 7 years ago. Second, I think it's a matter of preference: do you like magic and mysticism or sci-fi and mysticism. The movies does neither right. First movie could literally spring from a Fairy Tale Universe but we never see magic being used. Second movie could literally happen in the He-man Universe and we would not be able to tell. The 80s knew enough to be vague because that is how fans would fill the gaps with their own explanations.
@@danhair ah, did you change your mind in the past 7 years? Ah, suspension of disbelief is I heard that it exists. But i believe it has its limits. Whatever was the filmmakers intention behind reveal of immortal origin, it nonethless made both ideas stupid, and the excuse, "oh well, it's cheesy film, who cares?" doesn't work. But if they went with it, i wish they stucked to Zeist story line, because I want some sense sense-free stories. One fundamental mistake HL2, was setting the story in sci-fi setting in the future, when the original was pretty contemporary film with fantasy elements. And the set-up is pretty uninspiring. Shield, global warming...wtf? Also, another fundamental mistake is Connor character who at the end of first film became basically a superhero. That character does not exist in HL2. One crucial thing: don't mess up with what's established before.
To give this film it due, as bad as it is was, at least they experimented with the lore. It can’t be worse the the source. Personally I believe they should of done highlander 2 set in the past. They had over 400 years to play with
Exactly. I remember seeing these as a kid and after watching part 1 I wondered how there could have been a part 2. I assumed it must have been a prequel. I asked a kid at school how this could’ve been a sequel and he said more immortals came from another planet. I was like what? I rented and almost popped the tape out because it didn’t seem like Highlander. Then the title screen came. Then the 500 years ago title card… 🤦♂️
A far better idea for a sequel, change the concept and move to the next chapter. McCloud is still immortal and the only one left, and is trying to make society better … but there are mortal forces opposing him. He's up against clandestine govt agencies and while he's immortal and super skilled, he doesn't have his own army. What if it's a variation of the Watchers from the series? Or a group set up by a now dead immortal as a fail safe. Or just secret spook group that want to know how come he's immortal and can they possibly copy it … thinking its biological instead of magic. Perhaps when he wasn't paying attention the govt became totalitarian and now he's got to overthrow it.
As bad as the movie is, I have to say that the hover board chase scene is a cool moment of practical effects at work. It’s a fun scene that feels like it was from a better movie.
So humanity blocked out the sun…everything had a retro futuristic/ cyberpunk aesthetic and everybody wore trench coats? So Highlander 2 takes place in the same universe as The Matrix and Neo is actually the one with the prize? Makes sense to me…
Funny thing, I’d never seen the original (was too young at that point), but I strongly remember the hoverboard clip they used in a trailer and was somewhat interested (reminded me of the air foil from Tale Spin).
So let me guess Highlander the first film gets the prize. Highlander the second film, the prize is sending everything back to the 1950s? And no DeLorean insight. Great Scott.
It's much better than most Marvell full CGI scenes I've seen. It's a pleasure to watch this kind of fight with real actors. This is something very rare to see these days.
I think they even called hoverboard fight a lost art on behind the scenes documentary cuz today those scenes would be done in front of green screen and cgi
It’s actually not a bad set piece comsidering the size of the set and the wire work. Though if I’m remembering correctly, this is the directors cut version, so most of the hoverboard scenes are sped up as they should be. The theatrical unsurprisingly made this scene shittier by playing the wire work shots at real speed, which made it look cheap since they’re going like 5 mph.
As ridiculous as this movie was, and everyone involved has said that they completely ignore that this movie was ever made, it still entertained me enough to enjoy watching the BS...
I remember watching this for the first time when I chose this movie over several others in the video store. I was enjoying it until I saw this scene with the asshole laughing like that with his tongue out and thought this is stupid. I was in second grade btw and already knew this was corny. You have the rights to a cult classic where you can't lose and this is what you come up with?
Dilemma of the whole Franchise: The first movie didn´t allow a sequel in so far as Connor has been the very last immortal in the outcome, gained the price and turned mortal again. The magic ended once and for all. No turning back, no possible backdoor. There are few if not zero further examples in movie history that made a sequel THAT impossible. There would have been the possibility of a "Sequel" set BEFORE the Highlander finale (semi prequel, if you like).....the TV show, for example, but they messed that up, too, at least in a chronological kind of way. So, the whole Franchise is an incoherent mess, with part 2 being one of the worst and most embarrassing sequels in movie history.
could have easily made a sequel that made sense and worked, this shit just come about because the producers wrote stupid shit in desperation for a massive hit. Highlander was certainly not impossible to make a sequel to that was good and made sense it is a fantasy film after all there are no hard and fast rules if you can make it up you can find a way out of it too!
@@roobear78let’s do two scenarios Ziest Instead of 500 years ago, it was 500,000 thousand years ago on planet Ziest. They are placed on earth will they will be reborn. There can be only one. Renegade They don’t come from an ancient yet technologically advanced society. Instead kitana is from ziest as he too is an immortal and the game is universal and not just earth bound Kitana is an alien who comes to earth to challenge the one they call Mac loud. As with Ramirez, in the zoest version he and Connor and Kitana are all aliens and he and Conner are both reborn on earth as punishment for their treason and must participate in the game in order to have their freedom and faith restored. As for their sentence on earth , once reborn, and once upon first death, they shall be immortal and fight till there is only one. In the renegade, he is called back by the quickening.
Here is my idea for the Highlander reboot Highlander 1: Connor dies and ressurects as an immortal, met Ramirez and trains him but the Kurgan killed Ramirez, and then he faced the Kurgan but escapes and he kills a new evil immortal character not included in the original. Highlander 2: After the death of his wife in the flashback scene he travelled the world to gain knowledge and then he meet Nakano , a sorcerer swordsman who is also an immortal. He told him that Kane and Kurgan are allies, and then Kane fights Connor but lost but Nakano protects himand escapes, but Kane successfully killed Nakano in the process but this time he is not imprisoned but also escapes, fast forward to the present Connor fight the Kurgan but Kane intervene and let Kurgan escapes again and ithe process Connor fight Kane and succeed. Highlander 3: Set in the future ( just like in Highlander 2 but this time no concept of immortals as being aliens from another planet) this is where Connor and Kurgan finally fight each other in the final showdown, in other words The Gathering. This version of Highlander where there is no Duncan Mcleod.
The first highlander: legendary Third highlander: good Highlander the series: unforgettably awesome Every highlander movie after highlander 3: could've been better but I wouldn't say they were bad Highlander the quickening: you watch it once and then you never wanna watch it again after you've seen just how obnoxiously terrible it is.
@@Cellmate412162 yeah the source was pretty bad but still played out better than HL2 did even though HL2 had a better acting cast the source had a better storyboard. At least it didn't mess with the plot of the other HL movies like HL2 did.
Per me film bellissimo e da oscar.e vero seguito unico ad highlander 1.riguardo il telefilm nulla di contrario,ha fatto la storia cinematografica anche esso.
The whole zeist retcon sucked, should have just made katana an immortal alien who comes to earth looking for immortal earthlings to kill instead of all the reincarnation nonsense. They get here, realise earth games over and no quickenings to take, decide to fuck with the planet anyway which leads to this scene, and then rest of the movie would actually make some kind of sense
It is supposed that he will age normally once gains his mortality. This movie is set in 2024, original in 1985, so he basically aged 40 years in meantime
