I unzipped my raw DNA file before I found out about GEDMatch... So when I uploaded it I uploaded the unzipped file and got an error. I have since downloaded the zipped raw DNA from MyHeritage again and tried to upload it numerous times, but I keep getting an error message saying: "mysqli_query ERROR (707): Error writing file './DNAToToken/NT7566035.frm' (Errcode: 28 - No space left on device)" I don't know what to do or how to get this working. Please help!
Do you have videos to help us understand how to read the one to many list? How do I know the difference between someone who is a cousin to someone who could be a sibling? I know I have some siblings out there and I am trying to find them.
Thanks for the video but I wish you explained how to read the GEDdna match page. That last page you are on. which looks different then mine but i dont understand it at all. I wish it was in tree form. That would be so much easier. but it wants a GEDcom file and i dont have that from 23andme
Build your GEDcom file using Ancestry's free tree building platform or getting a copy of RootsMagic, which has a free version. Then download your tree from those locations and you can upload it. You are correct that the visual on GEDmatch is not as user friendly as many of the other ways to view family trees. However, I hadn't considered that reading a pedigree chart was important because the topic was focused on transferring DNA not necessarily reading the reports. I do have other videos about using GEDmatch and I hope you'll check them out. Additionally, since I made this video GEDmatch has updated their website. The aesthetics are different but most of the steps haven't changed much.
If you have forgotten your Gedmatch kit number, this is how to recover it. Come up on www.gedmatch.com Enter your email address in the email field. Look for the Forgot your password or wish to change your password? and Click HERE, click it. This process will take you through how to recover your kit number and then you can write it down somewhere.
That makes me understand that I have those ethnicities because it is in my DNA that they go deep! That's what the description says! or I'm wrong ? I feel a little uncomfortable because of the misinformation that exists on some RU-vid! channels.
Apparently, 23andMe has changed their DNA testing system and is no longer compatible with GEDmatch's main site. You now have to use GEDmatch Genesis, which is still in Beta, with several areas are not yet working and isn't "sharing" with the main database.
True, their Version 5 cannot be uploaded, and you discover you have wasted your money. Do the test in the first place with FAmilyTreeDNA aka FTDNA and you won't have to worry about your data not working at FTDNA.
Ram, FTDNA is not Gedmatch. If you want to use Gedmatch then you can unzip the data, load it into Excel, and convert the formatting, if it is just a format problem. Is it? Someone that has both versions can look and say.
Do you really need our permission to do this? I can understand the risks that were pointed out by others, but the cause is just. I should be able to take whatever risks are involved. But I don't see any "SHARE" button.
Gedmatch has a whole suite of ethnicity tools. I think it hosts third party genetic science projects so you can feed your RAW DNA data through those. They are quite technical though. It takes a bit of getting used to. I like the ancient dna projects - they're fascinating (there's one that tells you how much DNA you share with paleological finds) but those numbers are all a bit subjective/relative and there isn't a baseline example for comparison.. For instance - I may be related to Otzi but am I more related, to Otzi, than average? Gedmatch doesn't tell us that.
Good question. 23andme failed to show my ethnicity correctly, however when multiple members of the family tested at FAmilyTreeDna, the results correctly showed the less than 1% origin. This can be extremely important and the results showed me that 23andme is not reliable.
@@ramj9309 The updates seem to get less specific. How can you go from having 5% Iberian Peinsula to 0%. Makes no sense. Ged match seems the most accurate breaking down to regions of the planet not specific countries... specfic country DNA is meaningless.
Is there a way to see what your individual genes are? So let's say there is a specific gene variation, and you want to know if you have that gene variation. Is there a way to find out?

If you have a zip file, you can open it and extract the files. One of the files in the zip file should be a .ged if the gedcom was created correctly. If you are talking about DNA files, you still need to open and extract them, but in this case they will be a .txt or .csv file.
I just got my results back from 23andMe. I uploaded them to GEDmatch (it's still batch processing), but I also tried to upload to FTDNA, but I keep getting an error. Is this because of the new V5 chip 23andMe is using?
Yes. You can do one to one comparisons with the V5 chip but not one to many. Once their Genesis project is out of beta, you should be able to use all of the tools.
If it is the recent 23andMe test or the LivingDNA test, Family Tree DNA won't take it because it is not the same chip (i.e. data) that the previous 23andMe test was.
I have no reason to suspect Native American ancestry for at least 11 generations (Some people made up legends that some people were Native American), and no unknown ancestors before the generation of my 7th great grandparents. I just tested myself with Ancestry and Gedmatch analyzing the raw data found tiny amounts of Amerindian on 10 chromosomes.
It might be something then. It could also be corruption of the reference database. This may indicate that an ancestor in the 4th-10th generation may not have been who the records say (adoption, illegitimate child, etc.)
Hi Andy: Have a question which has been bothering me for the past few days. I uploaded my raw DNA file to GEDmatch from my Ancestry DNA results and the ethnicities do not match. I am a complete novice to all of this and trying to wrap my brain around all of these things, but I am quite struck with these two different findings of ethnicities. The Ancestry DNA ethnicities, to be honest, is what I thought it should look like. When I saw the results of the GEDmatch, I was shocked and majorly confused at what I was looking at. I wonder- if I take two DNA tests, are the raw data always identical? I’m thinking in terms of one test from 23 and Me, and one from Ancestry as an example. I would expect the raw DNA to be identical (not the analysis between each test), and thus if the raw DNA data were formatted the same in the zip files, a diff should reveal no differences. Is this a fair estimate? Or am I giving too much credit to the accuracy of the raw DNA data?
I'm nervous I'll screw things up and mess up my tree. And I'm nervous that the 10-year-old Lowery Newcomb I'm trying to connect ( actual parents) to him the 1880 Indian Creek, White, Illinois, USA census. It will be messed up by me too I fear. Yes you can, but I don't utilize this website as it isn't a genetic genealogy company. Use Google to search for "How to download Raw Data from CRI Genetics" and you should find something to assist you.
The amount of shared DNA gives you clues to how closesly related (the more cM the closer they are related to you.). After that you have to start to compare family trees.
Do your test at FamilyTReedna if you want to be able to upload to GEdmatch, but you will also have a great data base at FTDNA to use that really rivals gedmatch and FTDNA give you the tools that you would have to pay extra for at gedmatch who make their money from fees rather than an initial test like FTDNA.

No. I've talked with the owners of gedmatch. They do a very good job with keeping their database secured. You can always use an alias when registering to not have your DNA directly connected with your name.
if I take 23andme and my kids will take Ancestry DNA can we then check if we really have blood relations? I didn't see in the video that it shows the match of the probability of a relationship between you and your parents. In which column it is mentioned?
It will show that you share 3587 cM (or there abouts). Also if you click on the A and choose the graphic option on the next screen, it will have 22 yellow bars (with a few thin stripes of green mixed in) on top of a solid blue bar. This means you are parent/child.
I have transfered my dna to Gedmatch but I feared I by accident opened my zip where the raw dna was stored. What should I do? I have already transfered the raw dna to gedmatch.
can I use gedmatch for any reference? With ethnicity. This lines up with my dna.land and myheritage results but not with 23andme or ancestrydna. What's weird is that it shorten my european results. Do they have a limited data on european ancestry? I generally get north africa and the middle east as predominant non subsaharan african ancestries
GEDmatch has a lot of different ethnicity calculators and you would have to dig into each one to see what the differences are. I have heard that some of them are tuned to specific populations so that may also be affecting your ethnicity results.
If you log in your kit should be there and you can use the tools. If you uploaded a kit that is not compatible (Living DNA and 23andMe current version) then some of the tools won't work.
Hello, could you please tell me if it makes a difference whether I upload my DNA from one company to another or if it is more accurate to just take the test? Would the results be more accurate if I actually took the test or would they be the same as if I had uploaded them from another company?
Ethnicity results - doesn't matter because they are all equally good at correctly identifying the continental level and equally iffy at identifying levels smaller than that. For cousin matching - its best to be in the database that has your relatives (close and distant). Since you don't know who the distant ones are (hence a reason to take the test), try to get into all of them. If you catch the sales, you can do it for around $170.

It is 'just a text file', but considering the experience of most people who'll likely watch this video. If they open and change anything, their DNA results will be corrupted when they transfer the file. So, no, it's not odd.

Actually, MyHeritage just announced that you can. Also, I spoke with my friends at GEDmatch and hopefully their new Genesis website will be released next year and you'll be able to upload to them as well.
I felt the same way at first; interesting thing, they are not necessarily going to be a "Distant" relative; nor do you have to contact anyone if you don't want to; no pressure to do that. I had no interest in meeting anyone new, but it's been so exciting now to meet some of my matches, 2nd or 3rd cousins, just great people. And yes, you do find out some family secrets, so to speak, but it's all good, & interesting; better than watching tv, lol.
i have ancestry dna results and logged into 23andme and it says register kit. I did not get my dna sample tested from them just ancestry. so how to get results from ancestry to 23and me. it does not do like you are showing on your video
For 23andMe you have to test through them. FamilyTreeDNA and MyHeritage are the only companies that allow you to transfer your results from Ancestry or 23andMe.
GEDMATCH has serious problems. I've uploaded about 12 times and each time, it says that the tokens have not processed. It says wait, well after having done it 12 times for 3 samples, I am still unable to see GEDMATCH working.
I was able to enter and see all my samples on about my 11th attempt. First, I used two other email addresses to upload the sample, finally, when I uploaded them again using just one email address, I could see the other samples which I then removed. Thanks for the reply. By way of comment, GEDMATCH is not as good as FamilyTreeDna for practical purposes. I would highly recommend that anyone doing Ancestry or myheritage, upload to Family Tree DNA. Its a free upload, great software, and generally, a very different very large data base of people. I've got samples at 23andme and those matches are next to useless compared to what I find with familytreedna. The other thing is, FamilyTreeDNa have male and female dna tests that augment results impressively. Example, A Ytdna (male) match and a Family Finder Match means a great deal towards tracing your male line that has disappeared. So far, what I saw on GEDMATCH matched what I was able to see at Family Tree DNA so, I would rate it as essential to any researcher.
Family Tree DNA database is around 1.5 million, the last time I contacted them. GEDmatch is at 1.2 million, MyHeritage is at 1.75 million, 23andMe is at 5 million and Ancestry is at 10 million.
Gedmatch has a chromosome browser! Lovely, lovely chromosome browser. AND it has triangulation tools. Both these things make Ancestry look a bit amateur. Yet I love the Ancestry interface for working with the family trees (when there are actually trees and they are linked to the DNA match). Gedmatch numbers of matches, who have uploaded RAW dna results after testing with Ancestry, have the prefix 'A'. So I know they should be somewhere on Ancestry where their trees are more likely to be (working with trees, on Gedmatch, isn't a breeze - it's quite basic and we can't even download the ancestors to process in a different database or upload to DNAGedcom). Does anybody have any tips on matching 'A number' Gedmatch matches to their corresponding Ancestry match profiles? I think I might be in a rare group where I use my actual name on both sites! I've found less than ten Gedmatch matches on Ancestry!
I usually go by the amount of shared DNA to see if I can get them in the right ballpark. Keep in mind that less than 5% of people who have tested with Ancestry have uploaded their results to GEDmatch.
OK, 23andMe changed their chip last year. So if there is a kit number attached to it, it has a star by it indicating that it can't be used in one-to-many matching. Eventually, GEDmatch will have their Genesis platform out of Beta and then your 23andMe results should be comparable to others.
The constant barrage of myheritage adds on RU-vid are a real turn off. MyHeritiage also constantly bombards me with marketing emails. FamilyTreedna has better software, better people and a collection of DNA tests that make myheritage and ancestry look like raw beginners.
Ancestry and MyHeritage are beginners when it comes to DNA testing, Family Tree DNA has been around longer than anyone. In fact, MyHeritage uses the Family Tree DNA lab for their processing. That being said, it doesn't mean that there isn't value in what the beginners have to offer.
Gedmatch sucks. First admixture. it seems to me that you have to be an acadamicus to understand the results. And Gedmatch is in my case not accurate. Iam half Dutch and my father (unkown) comes from former Yugoslavia area (unknown wich country). Gedmatch says iam 50% Bulgarian and 50% Irish or 50% Romanian and 50% Irish. Or Moldavian. Or Greek. Funny because i have albanian/Kosovar family and from the Sandzak. And according to Gedmatch iam not even Dutch. Second, Gedmatch dna matches is not great. Myheritage is way better on dna matches.
Bulgarian, Romanian, Moldovia, Greek and Yugoslavian DNA are all probably very similar. Certainly more similar to each other than to Western European DNA.
