Stars: Mickey Rooney, Jeanne Cagney, Barbara Bates Director: Irving Pichel An auto mechanic sinks deeper and deeper into a nightmare world of crime and sex after committing a petty theft to take a trashy blonde on a date.
My all-time favorite Rooney film...he trashed Quicksand in his autobiography since it didn't do anything to revive his career which was in the doldrums at the time. And he had trouble with the producer compensation-wise.
@@coppingtonfarnham7731 I can definitely see why he "Trashed" this movie. He was always to "animated" in every role he's played, in my opinion. He was viewed in Hollywood more like the "Jester" he was never to be taken serious in Hollywood. He was all over the place, "ADHD" He was very unbelievable in this role. Mickey Rooney the lover? The stick-up man? The Murder? Nawww, he could never pull it off, in my opinion. His best roles he played to me was the ones he played with "Judy Garland". In my opinion. This exposed his "Napoleon Complex" Just look at the name they tagged on him. "Mickey Rooney" like "Mickey Mouse" he knows that he was their "Muse" they laughed at Mickey in Hollywood. He knew that.
@@antoniarivers7636 He was given uppers and downers during his early career. He was a heavy gambler and he was bipolar, probably drug induced. You have no idea what you are talking about. He was respected by his colleagues. Go read a book. I doubt whether Ava Gardner or Elizabeth Taylor would date you.
@@lynettekomidar I have no doubt that he just a like "Judy Garland" and most child stars was abused in the hell's of Hollywood as well. I was merely stating my "opinion" on how "I" viewed Mickey Rooney. I have never been able to take him seriously in so-called strong roles.
Wow I'm sitting here watching this movie I wasn't even born yet when this movie came out I was born in 54 boy back in the day they had great actors great actresses they actually knew how to act the pitiful actress today couldn't polish their shoes back in the day. Thanks for putting good movies out for people to watch cuz you don't see crap at the movie theaters and you don't see crap on the TV or shall I say that's all you see is crap. This is great keep them rolling
Excellent movie. Mickey Rooney cannot be said to be typecast judging by this movie. A really good story with a good cast. Many thanks for this movie. Without your effort I would ever have come across it.
I've had a great life so far, being able to meet many celebs. Lol I was however able to eat lunch on Mickys old dinner table. To me he was the greatest and I'm not even old. Hahah Rip Little Mountain Man
Maybe Mickey Rooney didn't like this film, but it's a little gem. Well acted and directed, it's a solidly written flick, and Rooney owns his part. Easy to see Jeanne Cagney's resemblance to her brother...she acts quite well in this flick. Overall, a great find, and thanks for uploading it!!
@thatzim wtf I think he had trouble with his producers at the time. Also, his career had gone from being a child actor/young teen actor to something less at that point in his life. He got typecast as the Andy Hardy character. He was considered too short to be a leading man, too old to play a teen, and he wasn't in demand. All of that put together probably did a number on his mind. (Just a guess, though).
After borrowing $20 from his employer's cash register, an auto mechanic is plunged into a series of increasingly disastrous circumstances which rapidly spiral out of his control.
It's 10 years or so since Rooney was touring in a stage-act in England.. It was said after he died that he'd been bled dry of all the money he'd made and that his estate was only worth $18,000. This after nearly 90 years of showbiz, on screen and on stage.
johnhardman3 Studios didn't pay much. They got actors tied up in contracts that made them virtual slaves. The studio owners had complete control over their lives. It was sad that Barbara Bates who played Helen only lived to 43 years old. She committed suicide in 1967. She didn't make much money either. Near her end she worked as a secretary and hospital aide. It's sad how the non-talented rich use wonderful people like Barbara. She was in at least 31 movies but ended up having to work menial jobs. Barbara was also a pin up girl during WWII. She was so beautiful.
Mickey Rooney was a heavy gambler. On top of that, later in his life, he was verbally and physically abused by his eighth wife Jan and was also abused and financially exploited by his stepson Chris and his wife Christina with Jan protecting them. Those around him are demons, that's why he died in such a tragic way.
Quicksand is an effectively frightening film. This ordinary Joe flips his wig with terrifying ease. The film is a fascinating study of delusion and denial, the sorry consequences of lust and greed. Peter Lorre is creepy as Nick, Vera's former employer. Vera, Jeanne Cagney (James Cagney's sister) is effective as Rooney's love interest. Danny is doll dizzy and he needs the lettuce to date Vera. Danny finds his life spiraling out of control. Quicksand is killer-diller, see it!
Mickey Rooney: great, great actor and I love him ... yet no matter how hard he tries to deliver a manly performance, one cannot resist the feeling that this is a young un running around in his grandfather''s suit.
VAMPYBITES I think you are incorrect re the Mickey Mouse club. I believe it started in the late 50's or early 60's and this man is in his 20's, movie made 1950 so how is that possible?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey_Rooney 300 films stemming from the silent era. Rooney was a great actor, comedian, dancer and all round performer. According to this article on Wikipedia, Laurence Olivier said that Mickey Rooney was “the best there ever has been”. I loved him in the Andy Hardy movies, in National Velvet and in many others. His performance in The Human Comedy (about the homefront in WW2 ) was outstanding. It was reportedly Louis B Mayer’s favourite movie.
Really enjoyed this flick. Watched today on 'Movies' on Spectrum. At the end , the attorney who he abducted asked Rooney 'Is this your first offense'? Oh, I don't know, embezzlement, robbery, attempted murder, theft, evading arrest, etc. But, all that aside, heck of a movie, well acted and enjoyable. Jeannie Cagney's best role.
I like the fake orchestrion... it's so bogus that it's hilarious! At least they used a real upright piano for the back, but at no time do we actually hear it... the music for the arcade scenes is dubbed by studio musicians.
Don't understand where he spent $20 on the dame. Took her to a club that was cloed, gave her 10 cents at a penny arcade and then took a walk on the beach. Hey big spender. 😅😅😅
Mom used to say to us as kids " if you can tell a lie...you can be able to steal.....if you are good at that you can do murder" so true words fortnualy he didnt kill but almost...
After Danny was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, he organized a prison revolt, taking the warden and the warden's daughter hostage, after escaping he released the warden but kept the daughter, whereupon they embarked on a cross country life of crime, ala bonnie & Clyde. Remaining at large to this day. Police departments across the country have been advised to be on the lookout for a Mickey Rooney type fugitive.
This story is so dumbell How this character ever Got to where he is in the First place...Beats me. Even if it is only a dream. I suppose the audiences We're less worldly back In Nineteen Fifty.
This movie was overrated, and pretentious. His role was unbelievable "not good" in this movie. When ever I see him attempting to play a serious role. The "Good Ship Lollipop" and the "Munchkins" from the "Wizard of Oz" comes to mind. I've always viewed Mickey Rooney as a candy actor.
@@MovieMakingMan This is one of the worst roles I've seen him play. He seems to suffer from the "Napoleon complex" which many do. Mickey Rooney will be no exception.
Overrated? This film is only known among Noir buffs and even among them, it's not highly regarded. I am a Noir fan and I see Quicksand as a trivial little entertainment. As for Mickey Rooney, I think he was excellent in dramas like Requiem for a Heavyweight and The Comedian. The only time he wasn't convincing is when he tried to be tough.
@MovieMakingMan I just could never take him seriously as he attempts to play romantic roles. Though the script was well written. I was not feeling'n him in this role.
