If you wish to machine stitch a traditional binding using less fabric than the usual 2.5" strips you can use 1.75" strips. Another reason you might want to make a binding this way is if your fabric is extra thick. Some ethnic fabrics which I often like to use, like homespun, fits this description.
I also show you an easy trick for connecting the two binding strips where they meet up at the end.
