Super timely video and I don't know how I lucked out, but I'm going to be working with bias pieces to create a curvy "highway" of sorts on an art quilt. This technique is going to make my life so much easier. Thank you!

Hi Linda, it's Jenny again. This is the best, I always said to myself, no way will I ever do stems, branches, or small thing's. I just couldn't see myself struggling with tiny pieces of fabric. Boy, how nice, this opens up my options to so many fun appliques, now. Your very clever, & the right tools make a great difference for sure. Thank you 😊🇺🇸🗽. I'm so happy the tool's for turning are made in the USA. Thank you, this is my second lesson from you.💝 From Maine Jenny.

You videos are really good, especially for the beginner. I am getting ready to do some applique in the border of a quilt(an 8 inch border) but I can't decide which technique to use. I don't have a lot of time to get it finished, but it is a gift for a very dear friend of mine. I have mostly done it with thin fusible interfacing-where you sew and turn, do you think whisperlight method is any easier?
@thistledownquilts
@thistledownquilts 2 года назад
Whisperlite is very lightweight and because there is no glue on it, it makes for a softer appliqué. As far as if it’s faster it depends on which method you’re using to stitch it down. I’m sure your friend will be delighted with the quilt.

This was awesome thank you. I'm working on a quilt and it's calling for an 1/2 finished stem I guess I could use one of these techniques. Plus I'd like to know am I supposed to make the stem bigger and then sew to the half in or what do I do my favorite.

If you need a finished 1/2” stem, then draw your stitching lines 1/2” apart.

As a knitter, I’d like to make a suggestion on burying yarn. Do not clip the yarn end short, as the yarn could pull back into the tube, which would cause it to drift and/or wad in the tube. Instead, pull a 2-3” length through the end, as shown. Separate the individual stands. With a smaller darning needle, pull each strand to the backside of the fabric in different places. Example; if the yarn is 3-strand, it would be: º º º. Leave each strand 1/8”-1/4”. Secure each with 1-2 stitches of thread. Once you add batting, backing fabric, and quilting stitches, your yarn should not pull, drift or wad. When I bury yarn in a garment, this is how I do it; separate, and darn it in different directions inside the knit stitches. I’ve never had any yarn - naturals, polys, blends - pop out or unravel doing it this way. Your videos are very informative; I especially liked the reverse and reverse-reverse appliqué techniques you demo’d in a previous video.

Hi Sharon and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. 🤗 I admire knitters, it’s something I’ve never quite grasped.

Have any tricks for inset seams. I chopped up a favorite fabric for a bright idea then realized in the middle of 4 blocks were corner inset seams. I managed but would love your tricks in keeping it all even and squared up!
@thistledownquilts
@thistledownquilts 3 года назад
Hi Terri, the tip I was taught long ago was that when doing inset seams make sure to keep the stitches at the corner from touching. Also, starching your pieces with best press or starch savvy can help keep things under control. Hope this helps. 😀

Hi - why not cut the strips with the rotary cutter instead of hand trimming to a quarter inch?? Thank you.
@thistledownquilts
@thistledownquilts 10 месяцев назад
Hi Donna, by all means you can do it that way. I like to show that you don’t necessarily need a rotary cutter to make the stems, as many beginners don’t always have all the quilty tools yet. 😀
@LisaLisa-zl9vu

But don't you knot the yarn that you pulled to the back of the block?
@thistledownquilts
@thistledownquilts Год назад
Hi Lisa, actually I prefer not to. If you knot the yarn it leaves a lump. If you want to secure the yarn you can take a couple of stitches with needle and thread on the underside of your work.

why is whisperlite superior to fusible? just curious.
@thistledownquilts
@thistledownquilts 2 года назад
Hi Janet, thanks for asking. Whisperlite is not a fusible and is used to make turned edge appliqué so there are no raw edges and results in a softer appliqué as there is no glue involved. Hope this answers your question. 😀
