Not sure how to organize or fold your fabric? Let's make your fabric closet a little more joyful and merry! In this quilting tip, I'll show you how to fold fabric properly to keep it uniform, organized, and in great condition. I've been organizing my fabric this way for years, and while I've seen many fabric storage ideas for sewing rooms, sometimes the best quilting organization ideas are the simplest ones.
Getting started on a new quilting project is always a little less daunting when you can easily search for what you need. Folding fabric the right way is a great place to start!

I do this, too - but to that final fold I pin a little piece of paper with the length of the piece. I can see at a glance if it’s large enough for my project.

BRAVO!!! You're going to love it! Once I figured this out, I always fold each piece of fabric I get this way...even the smaller pieces. It really makes it so much easier to find what I need!

I have to keep my fabric sizes separate - these are all separate: 1 yard size, 1+ yards, fat quarters, pre-cuts, quilt backs. Then they're coordinated by designer group, then by color.

@@joyfulandmerryquilting Technically it's on some metal shelving units on wheels so they can be wheeled around to clean under and to be able to view all my fabric.

@@joyfulandmerryquilting I wish I had seen your video a week ago. I was gifted a big box of fabric and had to fold it all so I could get it organized. I just eye-balled everything and it’s not pretty. Your video makes me want to go fold it all over again using my big ruler.

Hi Mary, Thank you for sharing this fabulous fabric folding method. I got gifted a lot of nice fabric for PL blanket making and I decided to use your method. They look gorgeous and yummy… I love it. I decided to add a small painter’s tape above each fold indicating the length of the fabric. I am all set with the new fabric… now I will go and do the same for all of my fabric in the closet. THANK YOU!!!

I fold my fabric according by size( fat eights, fat quarter, 1 yrd, 2 yards..) each fits in a drawer, the last drawer is 5 yds. -7 yrds. In each drawer I keep them organized by color. I do not have more than can fit in the drawers. When I pick a pattern it wants fabrics by size so that makes it easy to see which fabrics I can use. When I fold my fabrics I use the size of ruler that can fold my fabrics to the most efficient size that maximizes my drawer width. Great organizing video.

I love this but wish to take advantage of my shelf size. I see an 11” deep shelf would work great here to conserve space. My shelves are a wall unit and 16” deep. So I have cut a piece of cardboard that I can use for length and width cutting and my stacks fit within my 16” unit BUT I have to stack two deep. And this is where my search for new inexpensive shelving comes in. I still say I want drawers that slide in under my crawl space (the wall behind the wall unit). Then when I open a drawer it can literally 12’ deep. 😂😂😂

The fabric pieces are in the closet, totally out of sunlight. I have a good light in there so I can find what I'm looking for, but I never expose the contents of the closet to sunlight. To be honest, some of the fabrics have been in the closest longer than they should be...and I haven't noticed any fading when unfolding and using them.
