Watching Bruce Springsteen lurk behind Al Jarreau, constantly screeching “We Are” is hilarious. I think Al Jarreau got PTSD anticipating that verbal attack.
@archi4320 I think you may be right because if I'm not mistaken, in "Greatest Night Of Pop" you never hear him sing it the way it is on the final recording.
No doubt, Al Jarreau had a *TREMENDOUS* voice!! But for whatever reason,....he just could *NOT* get his part(s) down during the We Are The World, session! And if we're being brutally honest, he was (vocally-speaking) a *COMPLETE, TRAINWRECK* on this particular day.....lol
That's very TRUE, stardom NEVER changed him one bit, if you saw him and recognized him, he'd greet you AND speak to you as if YOU were a 🌟 and he'd known YOU for YEARS, he'd say thank you and God bless you! He was a Pisces (March 12), FULL of LIFE, from Milwaukee, WI, from HUMBLE beginnings, he NEVER FORGOT that, had an ENDLESS number of friends, who had GREAT RESPECT for him! He came up through the ranks, had a Masters in psych, was a teacher, a longtime sideman vocalist for DAMN NEAR everybody, wrote lyrics to Brubecks "Take five" and Coreas "Spain", along with a few other famous jazz songs (The Jarreaus will NEVER be BROKE), LOVED his wife and child, KEPT everyone OUT of his business, made a GANG of💰and just an ALL around DECENT cat! If you just briefly met him, you'd NEVER forget it, he was humorous, quick-witted, well-spoken, he made YOU feel like you're SPECIAL and your LIFE is important ALSO! My favorite AJ album: "All Fly Home", 1978 Warner Bros.🙂👍
Ive been binging on Barney Miller and Al is so Ron Glass cool that I could see this happening with Harris as Al and Wojo or Dietrich yelling like Bruce
Bruce Springsteen sings everything with veins bulging in his neck, face & throat. He sings hard everytime. He sounds like he has an untreated case of strep throat & smoked a pack of Newports. That's what he do! His nickname is "The Boss" not the whisperer. If you're expecting him to do a soft spoken word over a harp, you've got him mixed up with somebody else. He's a legend, you'll recognize his voice as soon as you hear it. Rock on Bruce! ❤️
Those under thirty or so won't realize it but Bruce was probably the hottest one in the room at that time. Maybe with Michael and one or two others. Point is, Quincy Jones wouldn't want Bruce to do it any other way than this way... It's his signature style, and hearing Bruce on the single would help sell records.
For real he was a jazz vocalist / singer a solo artist it took almost 50 years to do a duet abulm with George Benson i think his only full abulm deut 2008 i think the year was
Most of them are solo artist. Al was probably drunk or high... wasn't W.A.T.W recorded on award show night? You know a few artist in that studio was under the influence of something.
Bruce was ready wit his part fo sho! 😂😂🤣. He didn’t care what went on before, he was like, HERE IT IS!!! 🤣. Now on another note, as usual blog indulgence critics have no damn idea who or what they’re talking about concerning Al. Who else in that room could sing the music that Al Jarreau had accomplished in his career: Dave Brubeck’s Take Five, Chick Corea’s Spain, Beatles’ She’s Leaving, & Brubeck’s Blue Rondo a la Turk, AND improvise in the key, then turn around & sing pop ballads like After All, the Moonlighting theme song, & other radio pop major hits like We’re in This Love Together, or Mornin. Maybe, maybe Jeffrey Osbourne, who didn’t have a solo on this track, but used to sing the whole We Are The World song in his own live concerts & let folks know. So Al was a unique vocal stylist & improviser, who clearly in this moment was not yet hearing how his part was supposed to sound, & understanding which part he was supposed to sing. I give Quincy credit for not passing on him. How Al ended up doing it fit perfectly, & this still predates moving notes around with a computer mouse. One thing I always advised students is that there is absolutely NOTHING normal about performing music in the studio & having it recorded. There are many who feel more comfortable & many who develop a comfort level way of coping. So imagine being in the studio in THIS situation, hearing parts for the 1st time in the midst of this epic compilation of legendary iconic artists. Flippant criticism in this case is just mad ignorant. Educate & reckonize!
Dannnnnnngggggggg, At first I was like, I don't feel like reading all of this, But you drew me in, Because That man had a unique and unmatched voice and capability. So you are 1000% accurate, Well said 👍🧡💛💙💜🤎
Al was just Being AL. He wasn't a Pop guy. He was a Jazz Master who became Popular. Him singing here is like asking Buddy Rich to play with The Beatles and then getting pissed at him because he Swung The Band Too Hard.
So true I loved his Jazz style. Huge fan I got to see him live in concert (up close)orchestra seating. Al was 1 of a kind giving 101% to his fans.I loved his work... he was a passionate brilliant gifted talent. A Singer's life...
I'm sure qj wanted Bruce to sing the line in his style, as Bruce was one of the hottest artists in the room at this time and having him on the record would move records.
This comes as no surprise to anyone use to recording songs. Often times retakes and punch-ins are required to get the song right after many tries. That's just the nature of recording. But the end results always sounds like is was done flawless in one take.
Not flawless Somebody got Willie Nelson singing a LIE God DID NOT turn stone to bread Luke 4: 3. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4. Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’
@@rondavid7413 that was the one line that turned me off from the very first day the song aired on radio stations across America. I wondered if it was just a mistake on Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie part when they wrote the lyric, mixing up turning water into wine, with the temptation to turn stone into bread. Or was there an actual deceiving spirit behind it.
@@michaelwarren7962 Exactly, when heresy happens its never just coincidence but a direct spiritual offense to pervert the name of God in Christ especially a LIE representing Satan's unsuccessful temptation towards Christ only Satan the Father of lies would insert such a thing only this time for millions to successfully believe his version and they did believe 2 John 1:7 I say this because many deceivers have gone out into the world..... 2 Corinthians 11:14 ... Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
The final product was flawless, beautiful and inspiring!!! But if you think Al Jarreau sounded bad on those takes, did you hear Bruce Springsteen? WTF was that....?
It's called the recording process. DUH! With so many individual parts to lay down, I guarantee you, Jarreau was not the only soloist with outtakes in this massive session.
Well, it's not really about singing ability, it's knowing your own lines vs someone else's lines and when to come in and when to be silent. But yeah, end result was great, all's well that ends well. I listened to Al many a cold night by the fire with a glass of wine. Think I'll have to pull out the old vinyl and revisit this awesome singer!
This shows me so much! Remember: These were the greatest singers comin' straight from an award show into the wee hours of the night, getting and learning this song - cold, amongst their peers (again, the most pressure cooked cool kids in the world). Al still tried different riffs to give it his best. I always thought Al was great, now his status has skyrocketed even more. Thank you so much for posting!
Loads of the artists struggled with their parts not just Al - recording can be a dull and repetitive process but when you have patience and make the effort to get it right it's usually worth it
ha! the do-too-much of brilliant jazz stylist on a pop record!!!!! ha!!!! love it! so lets be honest. not everybody on this song is/was the best singer or the worst. there is the punk fever of cyndi lauper, the grace a melodic crooning of Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick, the grit of Bruce Springstein and the journey and twang of Willie Nelson. and that is actually what made this song a great one. no need to clown anybody's vocal performance from a producer's standpoint. in the context of a listener, it all boils down to personal taste, not the artist's ability or lack thereof. with a song like this, a producer is orchestrating the character of various voices to give this long af song movement. i think it was a brilliant pairing or assembling of characters. this video is a beautiful testament to the fact hat we don't always get it right the 1st thru 5th times. and that is fine. its the end product that makes magic in the ears and hearts of people. at the end of the day, this song understood the assignment and rose above the expectation. this song did an amazing work throughout the world. as it should have. many people on this song have talents and careers that were unmatched then and now!
Watching the story behind this song yesterday is what brought me to this clip. It was actually told that he was drunk from too much champagne 😂😂! In his defense, he was actually celebrating after the Grammys that night..so that's why there were so many takes when it came to his part!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Man , this shxt funny as hell!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Even on da finished version " THE BOSS " gets his LMAO... " WE ARE THE..." LMAO!!!! I FXCKN LOVE DA 80'S!!!!
For heavens sake. He might have just arrived; heard his part for the first time a minute ago. This is a snap shot. Not the whole picture. Al jarreau’s work speaks for itself. Haters sit down.
RIP jarreau .... saw him perform in Milwaukee, his original home.... he gave "home" a performance to remember...he actually took a break, told us to enjoy the summerfest carnival and come back... we all did... and he jammed......great singer, and a terrific dancer with amazing energy ....
Oh and Michael and Lionel wrote this song, with Michael pre recording his part, then showing up in his glittering ensemble ready to lip sync for the cameras... to those saying MJ was flawless while others were struggling are hearing the song for the first time
@@luciawoods5654 yeah but people are on Al Jarreau's ass after he heard the song that very day and had to learn it and record it immediately while others had a clear advantage.
For some strange reason Jarreau did not prove himself on this one, HOWEVER, for folks to suggest in the slightest way that he wasn't a premier musician is altogether incorrect. It's true, here all you can say is he seems pathetic, but if you have an ear for his style of music please check his significant catalog of music that he sings wonderfully, and many of which he wrote as well.
@@haroldmessinger1 Steve Perry? That's Bruce Springsteen. And it's ok, they were given that music the day of and they were coming from an awards show the night before. Not everyone will learn at the same pace; and also Al was finding his "voice" among all the others, trying to put his own spin on it
Islezeus, yes that is Bruce Springsteen, but Steve Perry comes later and the guy who mentioned him was just saying that he thought Steve did the best out of everyone. Personally I think most of them did great.
I'm.sorry y'all I know the song was a masterpiece and these are legends but how can u keep a straight face in that studio when Bruce comes in with his part
This is probably one of the reasons Prince didn't want to contribute in this fashion because he was use to working alone...how many people were in there and not just people the people he (al) probably looked up to...I be in the studio and sometimes that's what it takes to get it right
I would think its tough putting all the talent together that was on this song. Each one has been doing it their way for years and each one has a huge ego and would want to be the focus. I'm sure its not as easy as the finished product makes it seem.
Al was better singer than all of them together just a little understanding in timing that’s all. That’s why you practice . Specially in this case, too many hands in the pot. LOVE AL . RIP
@@American_King 🧐 You respectfully say “not Al,” and then name half the other people in the room? As if singing high is the only criteria… Many of the greatest were gathered there, and they each excelled in their own style. If there can only be _one_ “best singer,” it will be a *battle to the death.* A bloody mess of shoo-be-doos, hee-hees, and ruptured larynxes. 😬
Wtf ! Al jarreau is the greatest singer ever lived ! His playing instrument with his voice ! Thats a true artist ! He's far the best singer here ! With steve wonder ! Luther vandors peabo bryson and george benson is missing from here ! If quincy put al stevie together george benson should've been here as well ! At least a guitar solo from him would make it nicer for sure !
