Quit Stressing Over Feeding Your Snake

There seems to be a lot of needless stress out there from keepers who are either trying to get their snake to eat or trying to figure out how to feed them exactly right without hurting the snake. There are some things to know about feeding ball pythons (and other snakes) as well as concepts about reptiles vs mammals in general. But once you know these things, there's not much need for the stress a lot of people go through when they're just trying to take care of their animal. This video should clear up some things about feeding and food strikes (a snake going off food) and will hopefully lower your stress level.

My BP was a good eater as a young snake. When he hit ~1 year old he went on a pretty insane hunger strike. Around 5 months. I listened and didn't stress about it, but I did end up going through a few rats in my attempt to get him to eat. I monitored his body size and health to the best of my knowledge. I tried every trick in the book, including braining the rat (pretty nasty but I was willing to try.) In the end, right before I was considering taking him to a vet, I decided to COMPLETELY revamp his enclosure. Deep clean scrub of everything, all new substrate, a pretty radical redesign with the decor/enrichment materials. I let him settle into the "new" space for about 10 days and offered a rat. He took it with gusto, almost as if to tell me "I've been waiting for this, dummy." So if your BP is being picky, definitely don't sleep on new substrate + changing the environment. I'm not sure who I heard this from (Bob, maybe? But maybe some internet stranger) but they essentially told me that if your snake gets too accustomed to their environment and they have their scent all over it, they don't even consider taking a rat because they assume no self-respecting prey would wander into such an obvious predator area. Not sure about the validity of that statement, but it worked!

My vet told me that people came to him telling him that their BP had not been eating for 3 months. When he opened its mouth it had severe mouth rot (don´t know if this is the correct term in English as I am Austrian). So he recommends to see a vet when the snake doesn´t eat for some weeks just to be sure that there is no medical condition. Hearing that your snake is o.k. is also very good for lowering your stress level.😄
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 4 месяца назад
Absolutely, I always recommend taking your snake to the vet if they've been off food for a while or if you suspect a problem. Mouth rot will definitely prevent your snake from eating

I had a newborn roughscale sand boa that never ate for her first year, and didn't look especially thin. She would kill pinkies but not eat, not eat thawed pinkies, didn't try anything larger. A year into it, her sister had grown and was ready for fuzzies. So, I thought what the heck try a fuzzy on both. Struck, killed, and ate like a monster. Apparently she was just waiting for fur. And she got the fuzzy down that tiny throat just fine. When I was breeding carpet pythons 20 years ago I found the same thing to be true. Baby carpets don't like skin but do like fur.

This is my favorite snake channel around! My BP goes off food for 5-7 months every single year. He only loses at most 100 grams, which is fine because he's 54" long and weighs around 1650 grams. The first year it was stressful, but now I expect it. I try him with medium rats, ASFs, jumbo mice, nothing works until he decides he's hungry lol

And just now he ate again, i just wanna thank you and keep doing what you do helping other snake keepers and educating them. This is a great video, thanks for putting it out. I have 3 BP’s of varying ages and sizes and I have spent a lot of time stressing about eating schedules (not to mention wasted a lot of money.) @@dd-jf1lh it’s certainly not perfect but mostly it’s her immediately coming out of her hide and eyeballing me right up against the glass when I walk in the room lol. She is not subtle. I've been hearing a lot about how they go off food and seeing ppl ask about it all the time here, but I don't stress about my BPs eating at all! Maybe since I don't stress, they eat just fine. I'm chalking that all up to Bob's relaxed or very Zen way (but also very practical way) of keeping husbandry!

I just got my first bp last Wednesday and fed her for the first time on Tuesday night. Luckily she ate with no problem on the first try. She's 8 months old and only weighed 106g when I picked her up. The breeder was feeding her too small prey (cause he couldn't be bothered to buy and thaw a separate size for her, though apparently she was pretty small when she hatched). I have 5 BPs, 2 females, 3 males ranging in age from 10yrs to 6months. My 10yr old female is on a feeding strike, which coincidentally started around the time she was thought to lay eggs(she’d been bred shortly before I got her). Her body condition is still excellent, she’s still as active as normal, no red flags, not egg bound. My 1yr old female just came out of a 4month feed strike .. she lost 50g but still had great body condition. She’d grown in length and looked good. 2 of my males will strike for a few weeks at a time as well. I use “normal”(for them) behaviors and body conditions as measuring sticks along with my decades of animal keeping(pets and livestock). I’m noticing many new keepers have little to no experience with other animals as well. They take everything they read on the internet/social media as the written in stone snake keeping manual and deviations can’t be managed without a meltdown over the world ending.

It is strange to see for the first time, though, for sure! I only have 2 ball pythons, so I have fed smaller pray a little longer than necessary, just because I didn't want the feeders I had already purchased to go to waste, but that's on me buying too large a quantity of rat fuzzies initially.

Omg, thanks for this. I’ve been trying NOT to freak out, but having a new snake only eat 2 large mice in a year and refusing everything rat related had me stressing slightly. Especially when losing 200 grams in weight. But learning I have a boy, and not a girl, that he is still in decent shape, and the assurance from knowledgeable people to just try again, and it then working, has calmed me down so much. I still have jumbo mice to feed, and know now it might not be a regular thing, but I have trust again that the snake will know best. I may spoil him with some ASF rats, when he’s ready!

Good info. Its probably the biggest thing people stress about most. A couple of my snakes will go off food for a few months every year like clockwork. The only time to really be concerned is if they start losing a lot of weight rapidly. If its only 10-50 grams over months no worry. If it's a big weight loss in a very short period of time, then it's probably smart to see a vet.

This video came up at the perfect time for me. My normal girl is 6ish yrs old 5'3" and has been eating pretty much every 2 weeks for the last 18mos prior to the last 6mos anyway. She hasn't lost bearly any weight, she's still active. I know I shouldn't worry much but I can't help myself. At first I tried to feed every week but she didn't even bother to look at it. 2 weeks ago she came out of her hide came up to it then just backed away. I'm hoping that's a good sign she's got a rumbly in her tumbly and will eat this week.

Surprisingly, I never stressed about feeding my snake! She goes on and off food, I'm 10000% confident in my husbandry. She never loses weight, never even fluctuates, regular bowel movements in accordance with her feedings when it does happen. Proper sheds. She will skip a month, 2 months. I have a question... My husband brought home a female ball python from a job and so she's a rescue. I like snakes but I didn't know anything about caring about them...anyways I watched and did a LOT of research, in the 6 weeks I've had her I've, cleaned, sterilized and gave her all fresh coco bedding and moss. She was in a very dry and smelly situation and was half shedded. I gave her a bath in dawn. I have added new lighting, moisture, belly heat a second hide, enrichment plants and vines, upgraded her heat lights, I keep her tank moist and she has went through a shed and eats every week a large mouse ( she won't take a rat yet) ...uhh sorry the question. She was docile I could pick her up anytime when I got her ....and I have upgraded her life for the better I hope.. but now she is more angry and is snapping at my hand and even hissed at me one day. Shouldn't she be more chill now that she's healthier I'm not going to say happy because I know that's not an emotion of snakes. Sorry for the long winded comment.

I had one male go five months, which was freaky. He's been eating fairly regularly for about ten months since. My general rule is that if they were eating regularly under specific enclosure conditions, they will eat again under those same conditions, so don't go nuts switching enclosures and temps a whole bunch to get them to start eating. (COVID baby, we have 4 of those now) Previous keeper fed him mice only because she couldn’t deal with rats. He is approximately 4’ and 1100 grams. We have him eating small rats every 10 days now, and will be bumping that up soon. My question is will he grow any more, or is this as big as he will get? My childrens python is 8 months old and still on pinkies. This is because I ordered too many before she arrived (I'm a new keeper and used to feeding mammals, how was I really supposed to know how little a snake eats?), and also because she only eats half the time. So I offer her two at a time, and what she doesn't eat goes to my dog. I still find it stressful, and the time she went two full months refusing every time wasn't fun, but what else can I do but roll with it? On the subject of food, can maintenance feeding for 2 years and delayed growth in a snake impact its personality and confidence? I don't know if this is a stupid question, by the time I bought my male Corn he was already 2yo and very tiny, now he's 3yo he's grown a lot, but only weighs the same as my 2yo female (219g) I feel like he lacks confidence with food, though he's only refused one meal before. But handling wise a year later and he's no better at relaxing. Is that a thing?
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 4 месяца назад
It's probably lying not because of maintenance feeding specifically. But in general, a breeder who is maintenance feeding a snake for two years probably has a large collection and doesn't have the time to put into socialization. So it may take the snake a bit longer to gain confidence in their new environment

You didn't mention something important: the breeding season. My female Brazilian rainbow boa never refused a meal until she reached sexual maturity. Since that time, she stops feeding every year for three months. During this time, she is generally out of her hide in the daytime, whereas for the rest of the year she is almost always in one of her hides during the day. I have a beautiful ghi mojave that was sold to me as my first ever snake back in January and was told she was on live large rats. This snake was no bigger than 700 grams. I was so inexperienced that I thought this was normal and tried to do right by her by feeding live even though it hurt my heart after about 7 refusals of f/t (all in the span of about a month, I know😅) and she finally struck and ate a small live rat because that was all I could find. Well I was so happy that she ate after a month of having her that for her next meal I went out and got her a medium live rat! Well this rat was absolutely never going to be taken down by her, looking back it seems so ridiculous and obvious. She tried to strike it a few times, and then he ended up getting a bite in on her neck and nose along with a few scratches. I panicked, brought her to vet while my husband tried looking for somewhere to rehome this rat that we had now made an emotional apology and pieces of cheese to for being bit over and over and having to just grin and bear it. The bites were superficial and she had no signs of an RI or any other sickness, body health was amazing besides some damaged scales. I got an earful from the vet about live feeding and later went on to learn that no average ball python needs to be eating even medium rats, let alone a 700g eating LARGE RATS! I have tried so many things to get her to eat since then, we have upgraded her cage, added so many hiding spots, her husbandry is perfect, we have her on eco earth and she is bioactive with her own little plant garden. I love her to pieces but in this entire 6 month span, even with the one small rat, she has not shed ONE single time despite those injuries. Has not gone into blue, has not turned pink even! She also turns her nose up at every single meal but I am never going to feed live again, I feel like it traumatized her. We have scented the cage, warmed it to specific temps, tried letting it defrost and warm up on her cage, tried mice, chicks, we even drove about 120 miles to buy some fresh killed african soft furs and she still just will not eat. Any advice besides changing her tank up again? I have thought about taking everything out and giving the coco a good sifting and washing everything down to rearrange the layout but completely taking it apart isnt super ideal since its bioactive. I also have been desperately waiting for that shed to try to do that to encourage her to eat but! I am at a loss, I have not seen other people talking about their BPs not shedding for this long. I now have over 10 BPs of varying ages and they all have eaten for me, but my OG girl Astaria just will not 😢
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 4 месяца назад
Snakes shed when they're growing. If your snake is not eating, it's not growing, so I wouldn't expect her to shed. You're right about not feeding that snake a medium rat. Small is just fine for a 700g snake, and if she's used to eating live meals, that's what you need to feed her for at least her first few successful meals. She moved into a new environment and then had a traumatic feeding experience but it's been long enough that if you offer her a live small rat or maybe even a live jumbo mouse, that should get her eating again. Once she's taken two or three live meals in a row, you can start the process of trying to switch her to frozen thawed, but you have to get her eating first. At this point, your snake is not recognizing what you're offering her as food, so you need to give her what she was used to eating before.

That's a myth that some people will mention, but most keepers with multiple snakes keep them in the same room with no problem. However, it is very common for a snake to start eating if their entire enclosure changes or if their enclosure moves to another room. A big change like that can often trigger a feed response. It also can do the opposite if the snake doesn't like it, but it sounds like it worked well in your case.
