I think this highlights how complex EV charge point installtions are. What seems very simple actually isn't. Firstly, if the client told me they want the cable hidden in shingle I would be asking them to dig 600mm deep with marker tape. Or suggest that the cable is clipped direct. It cannot be just hidden under the surface. I also wouldn't put the EV circuit on the RCD side of the board as any DC fault current could interfere with the type AC RCD despite the suggested charger having a built in Type A RCD. I believe a separate consumer unit should be installed dedicated for the EV as to not interfere at all with the existing installation. However this is where it opens up a can of worms. If you alter the tails to the existing consumer unit fir example henley blocks between the two boards, you will have to verify the existing installation. It starts getting a bit out of hand so when you have companies banging out two or three of these a day I wonder what they are actually doing.

Your totally right this is a great comment. Most people think it’s like putting in an outside socket but it’s much more complex than that and there’s no such thing as a “standard” install in my opinion as there are so many factors to take into consideration.
@DanstheEngineer
@DanstheEngineer 4 года назад
@@artisanelectrics yes mate! Definitely no such thing as standard and you have mentioned a couple of things the client has requested such as hiding the cable and potential for additional EV car in the future. Both things as an electrical contractor you should factor in instead of banging in a one size fits all service/product. But that is where is can be difficult because cost comes into play. Some of the EV charge point manufacturers cause a problem with poor install standards because they 'dictate' really poor unrealistic rates. Honestly, some manufacturers have hated me in the last because I would prove to them for a compliant installation, their rates do not allow for it in many cases.

I’m not an electrician so it may be obvious to others but having an interest in EV’s I have looked at Ed18 regs along with latest amendments. What I’m wondering is how you get past the regulations where it requires the actual charging unit to be isolated? The next question I have is to do with Earth rods, again may be obvious but I have extremely little knowledge in these areas but would like to understand what’s going on etc... What is the point of an earth rod if it is going into the same GND as the PME? Surely same Earth and if PME fault was to exist the earth rod isn’t actually going to do anything and RCD wouldn’t trip either? This is why I thought I’ve read in Ed18 that the actual charger has to be able to be isolated with some ‘unicorn device’ such as Matt:e SP-EVCP-T. Now I know some newer charger units have some built in fancy electrics but from my complete novice read of ED18 I read it as the actual charging unit had to get isolated (power into the charging unit itself) and that the actual charging unit self isolating is not sufficient or at least catered for in the regulations? As said I’m complete novice with no experience, I’ve done no more than read the regs to get an understanding so I’m more than happy to be educated by real experts.

Separate CU is the way to go unless you change the existing RCD for a type A as the AC ones may be saturated by any DC leakage.
@acelectricalsecurity
@acelectricalsecurity 4 года назад
How would that affect the existing RCD, they won't trip with DC leakage current, and the zappi has built in type A RCD protection.
@ianlocke6125
@ianlocke6125 4 года назад
@@acelectricalsecurity If the EV equipment is producing some residual DC fault across phase and neutral - even if not enough current to trip the Type A in the Zappi, this current could blind the upstream type AC and render it inoperative should a fault occur on one of the other circuits it protects - Extract from IET Website - What are the effects of DC residual fault current on RCDs? To help explain, it might be worth thinking about some older models of earth fault loop impedance testers, which could cause the RCD to operate unintentionally. To prevent this, some types of earth fault loop impedance testers imposed a DC current on the AC test current. This DC current saturated the magnetic core of the RCD preventing it from tripping under the test condition. Where equipment produces an element of residual DC, for example, variable-speed drives is connected to the electrical installation, the DC component can saturate the magnetic core and effectively blind or locks the RCD. This is known as ‘blinding’ and could either prevent the RCD from operating or reduce the sensitivity resulting in a dangerous situation. That's where I'm coming from unless I'm interpreting it wrongly?

I took advantage of the free charging point when I purchased my EV which was a BP ChargeMaster box and requires an earth electrode. The electrician they sent to install it just drilled a hole through the block paving and whacked in an massive earth rod, I did wonder how he checked there was nothing below, I guess he got lucky. How deep are gas/water/electricity mains typically buried? I assume that even if they are “typically” a certain depth there are always exceptions.

Maximum demand is what annoys me most about EV charging. Calculate it as much as you want, however you want - 100% of largest and 40% of remainder, or diversify cooker circuit and 1x ring then 40% of remainder and 66% rule for lighting adjusted for a more modest 20watt per lamp holder per fitting. Where I am SSE want the max demand WITHOUT diversity. The total of all MCBs added together. So it’s almost impossible for someone to have one with a service upgrade around my way. And then I find customers getting annoyed with me as a contractor that they can’t have one without an upgrade when some of their neighbours do.

This is a real common misconception. In all honesty, the Tesla wall charger is a bit rubbish - it has no 6ma DC protection so an expensive type B RCD is required, and it is a dumb charger so you cannot set the charger to work when electricity rates are lower costing. People seem to be under the impression that it works better with teslas than other charge points but the opposite is actually true!

700 pound for some cable & braker & some labour .. is not cheap.. but it depends on situation ..cable length .. and how long you work on it .. full day work + cable & supplies .. i guess UK Electrician is also much more expensive then Belgium ..

I am frankly astonished at these prices, I have just been gathering quotes for a basic install, excluding the Zappi 10m of SWA plus 3 hours labour and a test cert came to £100 , how much per hour labour are you all charging ??? It looks like you are all enjoying the OLEV feeding frenzy - hang your heads in shame - looks like Paul Aldous is the only decent bloke here.

I don't know any electrician that would do 3 hours of any electrical work for less than £100. It takes a lot of training, experience and running costs to be a competent electrician. You'd be lucky to get a sparks for less than £50 an hour in or around London. You're paying for someone to undertake safe and thorough work. Someone that chucks an EV charging point on a wall for £100 and walks away probably isn't doing it properly.

I’ve just priced up all the bits I would need, including a PEN device and 25m of 10mm SWA (as I want some extra capacity down the line) and it’s about £550 including an Ohme smart charging cable. That’s for all bits for the meter split, new consumer unit in the garage and all other bits. So £750 all in perhaps?
