Repairing the USB connector on a Rode NT USB microphone I got "as is" off eBay for relatively cheap. Turned out to be an easy fix and a decent microphone!
Get a Røde NT USB from Amazon (affiliate links = you pay no more, I get some money if you buy):
US: amzn.to/2X9SQzT
UK: amzn.to/2RvNEQB
DE: amzn.to/2N8jog9
The connector is a USB type B female vertical. I got this one from Würth Elektronik (Part number is 61400413321): www.conrad.de/...

Thinking about how much stuff just gets thrown away, wasting all the good resources. And most of it would probably be relatively easily fixable, like this mike. You are doing ecological work here as well.

It's terrible how much stuff gets chucked away for small faults... and in the UK, you cant even save stuff from the recycle center any more ! They wont let you take anything, and if you do it's classed as theft

Man, so happy for you! To be honest I had a pretty high opinion of Røde but seeing how that USB jack was designed, I have to say my opinion has changed slightly
@JanBeta
@JanBeta 5 лет назад
Thanks! I don't think it's bad design really, there's a screw to hold the USB jack in place and I also like the modularity of it. No idea how the previous owner managed to break it actually.
@markomadic9234
@markomadic9234 5 лет назад
@@JanBeta maybe the previous owner did a lot of traveling? i.e. packing/unpacking equipment, plugging/unplugging for gigs etc. That jack would be a stress point for a careless user... It's more of a studio mic though, so not sure if that makes much sense! :D I feel it could have been slightly better design with the jack mounted normally on a PCB, but then having an angled pin header that couples with the main board, rather than the straight pins.
@markomadic9234
@markomadic9234 5 лет назад
Had 10 mins free to procrastinate! Essentially something like this: imgur.com/a/iYJjNxi Although rewatching your video now, the design is not THAT bad. They must have had additional challenges like the placement of the 3.5mm plug to think about as well.
@dennisp.2147
@dennisp.2147 5 лет назад
There should at the least have been some potting material to relieve the stress from those 4 pins. I agree, poor design.
@officermeowmeowfuzzyface4408
@officermeowmeowfuzzyface4408 5 лет назад
Stress locations, it helps to put something there to strengthen it. Such as hot glue. It won't strengthen the solder connections, but it will provide the whole backend with support to the board. Resists vibration and movement. And its easy to remove. When used on wires soldered to pads or terminals, the vibrations of daily use, time, transport etc are absorbed by the glue, which has some "give" and retention; and not allow the wire itself, at the solder point, to weaken. Instead of a fixed point where all the stress terminates (where it is soldered), the stress is distributed across the entry point to the glue, and seen in parallel along the remainder of the wire to the solder. Love those easy fixes. But then I don't learn anything. And I love learning, more than I love easy fixes.

I've been using Rode mics for my whole career, 35 years in audio. When I saw they had a USB condenser mic, I was interested to find out if it was up to the same standard as their stage and studio mics. My biggest concern was how the Analogue/Digital converter would sound, since they used the same capsule as the NT 1A and I know that cap works perfectly. Well long story short I brought one and I'm very impressed with it. They've particularly well suited to deeper male voices because of the better frequency capture in low and low mid ranges. To get the best out of it for voice work, sit very close to the mic and talk across it, not directly into it, to make use of the proximity effect. It will get every nuance of your frequency range for pants moistening deep boomy man voices that drives the girls crazy and make subs shake desks. Good score, and thanks for the teardown (mine has scratchy volume pot, needs a clean.)

@JanBeta
@JanBeta 5 лет назад
I guess the acoustic side of things was done by another team. The USB jack design is fine in my opinion, no idea how the previous owner managed to break it that badly.
@raggededge82
@raggededge82 5 лет назад
Items like the USB jack are bought in bulk off the shelf from the lowest bidder. There are pros and cons to using industry standard connections; obviously they can be much cheaper but that also means that you don't control the quality. Back in the days when everyone made their own proprietary connectors, this was less of an issue, but then you run into the issue of inter-compatibility and not being able to find adapters. The nice part is that even though the part was of lower quality, replacement parts are very easy to find and work with.
@Netaction
@Netaction 5 месяцев назад
@@raggededge82 The socket is fine. But the mounting is wrong. The socket has two lashes for mounting that are not used. It could have been glued or clamped in position. But the full force is on the pins that are not made to maintain the forces. This is a bad design from Rode.

Seems to me there is a bit of a design flaw with that. The two metal lugs on the shield should act as a strain relief for the connector, as they are not used the strain is taken by the pins that flex slightly with constant plugging in and out the cable. Hence the connector eventually broke off.

nice fix. Jan. but the last clip from about 16:50 is the only piece of audio cumming via the Rode, and it has quite some noice and reverb from the room your sitting in. to be honest, sell it for 100/120 euro's and keep your AKG goeing, it fits your type of filming much more. that one sounds so clean and direct, dont change that!!! this is more like a podcast thing you have to put your whole darn head into this thing. ;) this Rode is always in the way on your desk, and pretty directional. hey it even sounds like it is sampling at a low sample rate in AudioMaster. LOL. *** with other words, your audio was PERFECT as it was!!! thumbs-up.***

I had to get a warranty replacement for my Røde NT USB microphone due to exactly the same failure. This really is a very poorly designed part of the mic - the USB connector should have been properly mounted to a PCB. I suspect this is a pretty common mode of failure for these mics. I used to remove the USB cable from the mic when not in use but now leave it in there and instead disconnect it at the computer. Hopefully, this will prolong the life of it. That said, I really didn't connect/disconnect from the mic that much so it didn't last anywhere near as long as it should have.

I reinstalled the USB drivers, I reinstalled Windows, I changed the cable, I connected it to another PC, but nothing helped. What could it be? Let me ask you a question that I hope makes sense. When I attach this microphone, the NT-USB Mini to my Macbook Pro, nothing shows me that it is actually working! I compare it to the built-in mic in my Macbook Pro and the Macbook Pro works great! I've tried both back and forth and I can't tell any difference. I can't tell if it is even working. No light. Nothing. The Macbook Pro indicates it is on but that is it.

Hey Jan, I followed this video in order to fix the loose USB (bad contact) from my RODE-NT Usb, but the first time I assembled it on the opposite side, so the power was not enough to even light up the blue light on the mic. So then I soldered it the right way, and the microphone gets the power correctly(and the led light lights correctly). But my issue is now that my PC does not recognise the microphone. At times, when I plug it in really snugly it works and it starts installing the drivers on my pc, but it quickly disconnects. I have asked several places in my city, but nobody seems to know the solution. I wondered if you or anyone in the comments section would know what could I try/do since I don't have a warranty to send it to official RODE, and they might charge me more money than what I paid for this.

@JanBeta
@JanBeta 4 месяца назад

Hello, my problem is that when I connect it to my MacBook it showing it in audio devices for both in and out, but in 2-10 sec it disappears. Blue lamp is on. I can hear sound of it only directly from headphone out on mike itself. Please help me to resolve this issue. Thanks.

Mh, sounds like an intermittent connection on the data lines to me. The mic and internal headphone amp are going to work fine as long as the power gets to the mic but you won’t be able to use it via USB. Maybe try to use another USB cable and see if that fixes it. Otherwise I’d advise to look at the solder joints on the USB connector in the mic (as in this video).

Might have to check my windows services to be sure I didnt change anything, AND NOW IT WORKS. I suppose I disabled the wrong thing hmm. Bluetooth is still broken on my Windows 10 thats for sure!
@JanBeta

For me, Windows 10 has a tendency to break the settings for audio devices with every update, I usually have to fiddle with the settings a bit and reactivate things to get everything working. Glad you fixed the problem for now! :)

I usually go with 350-370C for regular PCB soldering like this but your mileage may vary a bit depending on your soldering iron and your technique.

This microphone for me was a disaster, bought it for 150 euros exactly in late 2022, and few months has passed only and that USB connector is broken, im talking on discord and it goes quiet, or completely disconnects... I opened it like how you opened it, and well, i did it before i watched your video, i was astonished, the build quality is barbaric, found stripped screws, (one of the four which hold the top part on) they just screwed it half way in because it stripped... and not gonna talk about the bad design of the USB connector.. This is just industrial trash.

Wow, that sounds like a very low standard of quality control. Mine was at least assembled properly (apart from the shoddy USB connector). :/ It’s a shame that they put so little effort into the construction. I’m still very happy with how the mic sounds though!

`USB Type B jacks suck ... I've yet have one that didn't get loose and loose connection ... and I've yet to replace the jack and get rid of the problem. It's just a lousy mechanical design.
