Good review Dan as usual. BTW, the sound of this video is actually really FANTASTIC ARE you using VideoMic NTG for this video?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 года назад
Hey hey Harry! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! For this specific video I was not using the RODE videomic NTG. I was actually using the Andycine AC-M1 because I wanted to hear what the mic really sounded like and how I would EQ it differently with these NTH100's. I was very surprised to hear the Andycine through the NTH100s, it was giving me a slightly different perception of what I thought it sounded like, so I was able to EQ what I believed I was hearing all this time through non professional headphones. And it seems you like the new EQ for the Andycine! These headphones are definitely opening my eyes a bit on how I am EQ'ing my dialogue. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

If the goal was to match the raw audio, then I think both EQ tests show that neither headphones are reliable for post production. If you were going for a specific tonal shift, then that's a different goal, and its up to your preference for what you are after. Personally, I thought the Rode headphones' result was thick and lacked presence, while the other headphones, although thin and lacking bass, were in many ways closer to the critical voice frequencies for dialog. FWIW, I think EQ'ing the music instead of your voice would be more effective, as you would address a wider range of frequencies. For the music test, did you put a mic near the headphones and record the output? If so, that's not helpful as the frequency response is highly dependent on proximity of the drivers to your ears. At any rate, thanks for your review, as I find your videos quite helpful. Good to see the headphone cable can go on either side, and be replaceable. The color coding is a nice idea. Q: Do the Rode headphones fold up in a compact way? I find this is important when storing gear that goes on location.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 года назад
Hey hey again Dave! My goal was to use a raw audio sample, put on the headphones, and then EQ them similarly (by ear) according to what the headphones were giving back to me. My thought process is that the cheaper audio technica's should sound thinner because I felt those headphones always changed and muddied the bass frequencies and upped the treble to make things sound more clear. So my EQ would counter it to get it sounding where I want it to be, by ear. But I agree with you, I should have used music as a means to really test the headphones in terms of EQ'ing them and see how drastic it can sound when trying to match the headphones by ear. If I ever am approached about headphones that are interesting for review, I will add that testing bed into the mix. To answer your question if the RODE NTH-100 fold up for packing, they unfortunately do not. I didn't really think about that, but thats a good point for people that are packing and moving a lot with these headphones. We shall see how durable they are as I use them for the long term. Thanks as always for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@TLDR_filmmaker Evaluating headphones is difficult as everyone has different ideas of what "good" sounds like. For example, the SONY MDR-7506 are an industry standard, supposedly flat response, but I find them overly bright and fatiguing to listen to. My go-to headphones are the Audio Technica ATH-M50x. They are not perfectly flat response, but the mid-range is accurate and they are not bass heavy like most music listeners prefer. They fold up for compact storage, and the ear phone "cans" rotate and lay flat when around my neck when not in use. I have to assume RODE intends the NTH-100 headphones for use when recording dialog, so I'm interested in checking them out. Pity that they don't fold up. Thanks again for your review and reply comments. Cheers.

Definitely difficult. Sound is so subjective if not more than visuals. Very interesting to hear your thoughts on the Sony MDR-7506, not sure if I'll be getting a pair in the future to see how my ears hear them. Some other users have chimed in on the M50x as well. For the time being I have to say I am very happy with the cooling gel and foam ear cup design, it's been very comfortable to use these headphones for hours without feeling uncomfortable. @Office of the Pacific Thanks for chiming in too about the M50x!

Even though I love the ATH-M50x's. they for sure start hurting my ears after a long session! If the Rode NTH-100 sounds the same I would seriously think about getting a pair? What's your take on how they sound? As I've gotten older comfort is my second thought after sound quality!
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 года назад
Hey hey again Office of the Pacific! I wish I had a pair of ATH-M50x to give you a better comparison. Because these are my first pair of flat balanced headphones, to my ears it sounds exactly as I would assume, not a lot of punch and the usual muddiness you get in the lows/mids. When listening to music with these headphones I was able to hear instruments and melody dynamics I never heard before with regular headphones that covered it all up. When I did my comparison test against the M30x, I was able to distinguish that the m30x would tone down the frequencies of my throat voice the most, the area of sound you make when you say "guh". So I would push that frequency up a little and later when listening to regular speakers I would hear that "guh" sound more than I'd like. But that is subjective if that sound bothers someone or not, we're all critiques of our own voices haha. For the time being I would say the RODE does exactly what it sets out to do with a nice flat "uninspiring" sound that gives me an idea of where to push some frequencies to how I want my voice to sound. After listening back on a bunch of consumer devices, the frequency ratios of my tweaks sound very similar to how I pushed them with the headphones and doesn't feel like any frequency is overbearing. To my new experience with these types of headphones, I feel they are doing what they set out to do with the flat balanced response. I can count on them to tell me if I've pushed something too far and to hear more frequencies that aren't muddied up. And definitely the part about Comfort. These are easily the most comfortable headphones I've worn thus far. I've used other peoples field recorder headphones that are over the ears. Even if the ear cups go past my lobes, the headband portion would eventually push into my head enough for me to get a headache after a long day on set. These are just nice soft pillows :) Sorry I couldn't be of more help with a direct comparison, but hopefully this gives you an idea of what I'm experiencing when it comes to sound.

I own the ATH-M50x's, and I really like them, but they certainly don't have a flat frequency curve! I've just ordered the Rødes, but I do not expect them to sound the same. They will have less bass and maybe also a little less top. Unlike the M50's they're not designed to sound more pleasing than what you've actually recorded, but rather to give you a very realistic idea of what's there. They're for editing sound. The M50's are more for enjoying music.

I have for many years HyperX Cloud II headset which they have 50mm drivers, I bought them for 80€ and they destroyed almost any competitor until 200€ back then! Amazing sound from a company that manufactures gaming headsets. Although these had pure sound w/o any distortion and added bass at all! Also very comfortable to wear them for many many hours when Im video editing. These Rode headphones look good and I'm thinking to buy them as my left driver buzz in highs on HyperX last couple weeks. I really don't know if the Rodes can hold up against HyperX but they sound pretty good. That afraids me most is that Rode's headset have 40mm drivers against HyperX 50mm.

Hyperx cloud were the best gaming headsets back then, but they don't hold a candle against real studio headphones. Hyperx are a copy of the dt770, a superior headphone made in germany, and this rode was designed to compete against the dt770. Driver size doesn't matter, the hyperx has a bigger driver than the beyerdynamics, but sound quality is way poorer (i have both).

Hey hey SwandoggXE! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I'm not a gamer so I'm not entirely sure what you would be looking for in a pair of headphones for gaming. I will say that if you are used to the sound your current headphones produce, you may think that these headphones sound uninspiring, but after you wear them for a session they will sound quite good as you'll be to hear everything. When I used these headphones for the first time listening to music I was hearing instruments that I never heard before because other headphones muddy up the sound. Thats on the sound front. If we are talking about comfort for prolong gaming sessions. I think these headphones will be very comfortable. I wore these for hours editing and my ears were not sweaty and my ears did not hurt at all! The Audio technica's pushed my ears a lot and did not let in any air ventilation so it was never fun using them for awhile. Hope some of these thoughts helps! Thanks again for stopping by! I feel that people need to be careful with this headphones, especially those who hasn't got many experience trying out different headphones. I personally was hoping that this thing is actually good, has great clarity, well balanced sound, and everything. But so far that's not my conclusion after watching a lot of the reviews and listening to the sound demos. The term neutral/balanced/flat sounding are the popular words for marketing purpose but often it doesn't really mean anything . Here are 3 negative things I found so far, and if any of you have already tried it in the real world please tell me in the reply if it's true or not. (1) The highs are not enough even for something design to be close to flat sounding. Also even when corrected with EQ boost, I found that it doesn't seem to be able to show sparkly kind of high frequency (maybe around 5 - 7 KHz). Which mean the frequency reproduction accuracy and richness are kinda questionable. (2) There's a roll off at about 50 or 60 Hz, which is pretty common in affordable studio headphones, but that means it's not suitable for monitoring sub bass. (3) The transient is not fast enough. Which mean it's not good for accurate percussion hits reproduction. Combine this with the lack in high frequency, that could results in not very good clarity & instrument separation. I doubt that it's gonna be good enough for editing, mixing & mastering music. Could be ok for voice although I think I might suggest other option. So far I think it's only gonna be good as recording monitor & for casual listening 👍

Hey hey Pungki! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Very interesting to hear your thoughts on these as I am newer to listening to more expensive headphones, my ears are still learning and training. I caught Curtis Judds video on these headphones and from his thoughts and a better testing mic than I had, he showed that it was quite flat in terms of its response with a slight dip in the highs that you talked about it. Hey hey again Kartikeya! This being my first headphone I ever reviewed, I'd say the main points that are nice outside of a balanced freq response is the fit lock, choice of Left or Right side for the cable, and especially the foam cooling gel earcups. The audio technicas when I used to use them would hurt my ears after awhile and definitely would get sweaty. I'm not too sure what the starting price is for features like these in the current standards. So my best guess is that the RØDE is probably a good budget start to get a decent amount of features and sound quality for monitoring, it'll be interesting to see what the 2nd product in their NTH lineup will be.

Are they not Bluetooth?

Hey hey Eric! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! No, these are not bluetooth. You could technically attach a bluetooth receiver to the cable if you wanted, but that may not be the most elegant of solutions since the cable is long. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

I couldn't finish that movie. I probably watched all the others but that one just couldn't hold my attention.

Hey hey again IMDABROWN! Rocky Balboa is one of my favorites, but only the first half of the movie, thats the part I will rewatch. The fight and leading up to it didn't really catch me either. What I loved about the movie was to see Rocky's character after his heyday and how he was coping with everything. But after he is granted that OK to get his license back and fight is where I usually tune out.

eh no, audio technica is FAR from neutral, maybe mth70x ve got near neutrality, but previous ones always lies about voice intimacy, these previous audio technicas are better for hip-hop and so on recordings, akg k361 and sennheiser hd 600 are the true neutrality

Rode seems to roll-off some bass as after editing raw audio on it you boosted bass. Audio technica seems to roll-off low-mids...? You boosted that editing raw audio on that. But it seriously brain-breaking experience as you need to think about the differences in mirror flip. I am not sure if I judge this all correctly. :D I GOT IT RIGHT! :D

Hey hey Cool Lobster! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Alas I'm not paid to make the video itself rather I'm sent the sample and I spend my own time to test it and spend more time to try and give a video account of my experience for anyone that may be interested in purchasing it. If you were to take the MSRP (assuming I sold it) and divide it by the amount of time I spend creating the video I'd be making maybe around $7/hr. At the end of the day I choose to make these videos to help the community and I thank companies for giving me that opportunity to test their products for free and create the video for you guys. Even though I don't gain a lot of monetary gain, thats not my main intention. I learned a lot from youtube during my initial phase of becoming a filmmaker and those reviewers went through the same process of spending their own time to give me information. So i'm paying it forward. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Paul! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I agree, I am hearing so many thing I never did before. It was a little jarring at first, but I knew it was because I was used to what other headphones I have used in the past. Now I can hear things more critically and its changing my EQ'ing preferences. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

AKG K240's are cheaper and the industry standard for recording studios due to their neutral sound. Not as good for field use though.

Hey hey Punchmonster! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Thanks for letting me know about the AKG! I'm not as familiar when it comes to the whole gamut of headphone brands so always glad to hear what the community can teach me. I think I saw that the AKG K240 uses a XLR plug though? @@TLDR_filmmaker there's multiple versions of the K240's with many different plugs and impedances so there's a version for any set up :) but they're open backed so not fit for outdoor/public use like these are

Hey hey Andy! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Sorry about that, what do your ears prefer and how would you approach EQ'ing it differently? For youtube videos I prefer the slight radio broadcast vocal sound for my voice, for narrative films I EQ a bit differently and don't give it as much low end depending on the scene and genre of film. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Funn Foto! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I'm not studio monitoring headphones would have bluetooth persay, I feel they are generally always hardwired so that the sound doesn't get compressed upon wireless transmission. You'd want as clean of a sound as possible so you can hear as critically as possible. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@TLDR_filmmaker I have to say that I have a little bit bigger ears but the ear pads on the Rode are really to small even for my son. On the pictures it look much bigger. There are great functions on the headphones,like the band lock and the two conections of the cable👍💯 but sound and the earpads are not made for me. I use Hifiman 1000 V2,Meze Elite,Sennheiser 800s,Koss Porta Pro,Koss KPH-30iK and since today the AKG K361. I am not only in the HighEnd area at home and I tryed out in the last 30 years a lot of equipment but the Sound of the Rode is like all mixed togerher and it is bombing your ear all at once. There is no stage and differentiation between the voice and the instruments.🤢 Sorry maybe for TV and Gaming but music is not for the Rode headphones at least for my understanding. Have a nice day 👍
