Michael stipe was so gorgeous to me in this. Those bee stung lips and I missed when he had hair bc he had really nice thick hair that he changed constantly. I swear theres a clip of him in 85 with bleach blonde hair he looks like a young elvis Presley. I love this song love the 90s I remember this live performance and it's a great memory.
I don't understand why people say the band hates 'Shiny Happy People'. They not only wrote and recorded the song, they spent a lot of money producing a video for it and ended up performing it on SNL. Would be strange to do all that for a song they don't like.
The band has stated on several occasions that it's one of their least favorite songs. They've rarely played it live and they left it off their greatest hits album. Though I think it might be more backlash against the huge success of the song rather than the song itself.
From what I remember, and it's a long time back....; it was intentionally written as a 'pop single' for the charts. REM had just signed up to EMI I think and the company wanted a 'hit', so they came up with that given that they had never really been a singles band as such. So it's kind of tongue n cheek, but still a decent pop tune.
@@StratsRUs Isn't it? One of the best examples of that is Gin Blossoms when they played Follow You Down on Letterman. There's an EXCELLENT live-only moment in the songs final verse; right before the final line of the verse is spoken..they arrive on the final measure and they let the note hang and the vocal is dragged out [ BEAUTIFULLY ] over the instruments; just as they begin to fade.
