Chronic Town, Murmur, Reckoning, Fables Of The Reconstruction, Life's Rich Pageant, Document, Green, Out Of Time, Automatic For People: all flawless recordings! They're the American Beatles in my book.

This is absolutely one of the best songs anyone ever wrote. It's frantic and melodic and makes me tingle. You have to be a pretty decent band to have a song like this that isn't even an album track.

I too feel very emotional when hearing this song. It brings me back to a time in my life when I was young and naive but it didn't matter. Youth gets you through many things that may be harder later in life. It also makes me think of my family and how great it was. My mom was still alive and how I wish she were still here. This song helps take me back to those wonderful days.

All the session drummers they used post-Berry dragged the tempo. When I listen to their earliest records now, I'm surprised at what a brisk tempo all their songs were, even the ballads.
@ClueSign
@ClueSign 5 лет назад
@@DeflatingAtheism Yes, they sure clipped along back then. I worship Berry tho he did have a tendency (like so many drummers do) to speed up tempos during ive performances back there in the early 80s -- but that only made it more exciting.

if REM been your fave band since the beginning this will practically bring tears to your eyes - very emotional ... they were the instrumental (no pun) influence on who I became as I just had to perform REM songs- did my first gig as 5th yr senior in college in 88 and done over 5000 gigs since. It's what I do

About 1989, my room-mate came home one day with an arm-full of REM records (yes, vinyl) and that was all I heard for the next few months, as he had the loudest stereo in the house. I heard pretty much all the 80's college-rock IRS albums many, many times. Inevitably it got to me, and I've been a fan ever since. I saw them live about 1994, best concert I've ever been to. The intricate, haunting melodies, the ringing steel guitar, the clever bass back-beats and a master drummer make these guys totally unique. They were the sound-track to my youth, in a way.

I think anyone who considers themselves a lover of all music must rate REM among the elite. A truly unique style and sound that is breathtaking and inspiring every time I listen. Great that they went back to the very beginning. This is where it all started. This is BEFORE the so-called debut album that everyone constantly comments on. While Murmur is indeed the first full length (LP) record and a truly great collection, Chronic Town, from which the gem emerged, predated Murmur and to me really is what launched REM and their unique sound. And great to hear Michael return to his mumble roots and semi-improvised lyrics as well. REM was the best and the IRS years are my favorites.
