It's the very definition of moving, when people recognize that they don't exist in a vacuum: we are only a product of those who influence us, inspire us, and move us to be better than we are today. Such an incredible moment captured on film here.

Yowza. The last ten seconds are powerful beyond words. Kudos, Stipe - you made that whole room pull out their tissues.

my favorite bill berry moment was sometime during the fables era. mtv was interviewing michael and bill, they both look borderline ridiculous but especially bill because he was wearing a gondolier hat with a long piece of turquoise blue sheer fabric as a headband. while michael was going on and on he was just sitting there eating nerds out of the box.

@alec9tap I assume you mean Depeche Mode. I'm not familiar with them personally but I've heard many great things. They simply influenced a different group of people, and oftentimes the same groups as R.E.M, but they cross at different points. R.E.M. are the kings of alternative rock: they invented the genre through their early albums (which, as a whole, sound nothing like any music of the time) DM, on the other hand, find their influence in dance and electronica...very different genres

I miss this band so much..so glad I finally got to see them live back in 2004 before they split up...I don't believe they get the true credit they deserve..without them no Nirvana,Pearl Jam, Breeders, 100s of "alternative" (hate that fucking term) bands since then..but REM are still too cool (even now) for those who think they're cool..REM were as big a stadium band as U2 were without the pompous, self mythologizing, and as cool as the small "indie" bands without the pretentious posturing

How come they didn't let Bill speak? He is such a great drummer and he deserves the chance to talk as well!

A good speech overall, but I think Bill could have said something. After all, I feel that he was the most deserving out of all of them (except for Stipe of course) to give a small speech. He was the most pivotal member of R.E.M. imho.

@alec9tap rem sold out stadiums too and were releasing records more often than those guys. rem is retired because they recorded 15 records, dummy. murmur, reckoning, automatic for the people, green, document, life's rich pageant, some of the greatest records ever!

@bernlin2000 you also find their influence in Metal like Rammstein and Lacuna Coil, Nu Metal like Deftones and Linkin Park, 90's Alt Rock like Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead, Modern Indie like Peter Bjorn and John,Cold Cave,The XX etc. where out of all of those bands REM may only influence PB and J,XX,Radiohead,Smashing Pumpkins and Linkin Park...I just think DM's influence extends much farther than and wider than REM's and certainly wider than just the dance/electronica fields
@alec9tap
@alec9tap 12 лет назад
@alec9tap ...DM opened the world's eyes to something original and new, consistently adapted themselves through every album and staying more relevant in this age than REM.... How many modern day artists express gratitude towards DM (Rammstein,Interpol,Peter Bjorn and John,Rihanna) From indie rock,techno,pop,metal etc. REM's influence pretty much died after Grunge did lol
@bernlin2000
@bernlin2000 12 лет назад
@alec9tap Grunge's influence continues today, particularly through metal music. I don't think you're as familiar with musical influence as you need to be to make such broad statements: there has been just as many artists who cite R.E.M. as an influence in their art as DM, if not more. It's not relevant, though: the point is they were both highly influential groups. Both groups have waned over the years, but never lost who they are as an artistic entity. That's what should be praised, above all.

youtube video titled "REM Interview 10-30-83" on a show called "Livewire". But your paper is probably long since turned in. I hope you got a good grade. I've seen these guys many times since the early days, and Pete just doesn't talk a lot on-stage. Mike and Michael have always been the "public face" of the band.

@alec9tap, I Am from Essex, The same county as DM, Think they are a half decent band, But RORHOF. No chance, Husker Du should be inducted, The most underrated band of all time.

@shedendboy1 No i can watch R.E.M. videos all i want, im a fan (especially of their early stuff) but i am going to express my opinions on the subject of why one band (R.E.M) gets in the hall, and another band which has accomplished just as much if not more considering the odds stacked against any non-guitar act...
@semitime1
@semitime1 12 лет назад
AGREE! What is the deal with Eddie Vedder?, Patti Smith has one more hit record than me?
@alec9tap
@alec9tap 12 лет назад
@shedendboy1 I agree Husker Du belongs, But so does DM... Without DM we would have never seen electronic music take off the way it did.... They fought just as hard for their music to be heard as anyone else from any era, any genre and they achieved anything and everything that it takes to belong in the hall of fame, more so than Husker Du and just as much as R.E.M.

Peter is obviously drunk in front of his family, kids and best friends of 31 years. Makes me sad that he would choose booze over the people who love him.
@alec9tap

Btw playing the angel is way better than anything R.E.M. put out after 1992... And i agree that sounds of the universe is a boring album, but i dont think it sounded very 80s
@alec9tap
@alec9tap 13 лет назад
If REM and U2 are in the hall.... Depeche Mode should be.......But if that means there not getting in bc they never sold out, i can deal with that :-)
@roejogan8
@roejogan8 12 лет назад
@alec9tap rem ran out of ideas? have you heard sounds of the universe? i thought i was back in the 80's as i listened to it. and playing the angel isn't exactly a groundbreaking affair either. they are pretty good albums but definitely not as good as accelerate. not as good as new adventures in high fi, up, or reveal. even the new album has great songs like mine smell like honey, uberlin, walk it back, and that alligator aviator song are awesome.
@alec9tap
@alec9tap 12 лет назад
@shedendboy1 And at least DM never did a rendition of one of their songs for Sesame Street lol

@alec9tap
@alec9tap 12 лет назад
@bernlin2000 Here's where your wrong though...REM influenced Grunge yes,and then grunge influenced later metal,but modern metal wasnt influenced by REM,you'd be hard pressed to find a metal band that is directly influenced by REM..And i feel like their is alot more bands directly influenced by DM...I don't mean to sound like a REM hater but when people(and the hall) ignore DM's music,influence and impact,you know it's just agenda and bias against bands like DM and Joy Division etc.

How the hell di you father peter is drunk fred6069? Just because someone has a glass of wine that they are supping verry skowly i might ad doesnt mean they are drunk!!!!!
@alec9tap

I would like to thank you REM fans (most of you) for being good sports... And JoeRogan8 for an educated arguement on REM vs DM... But to shedendboy1 you stand no chance so stop lol
@alec9tap
@alec9tap 12 лет назад
@bernlin2000 And for the purpose of the argument influence is relevant because that's one of the deciding factors in getting in the Hall of Fame... So nice try
@alec9tap
@alec9tap 12 лет назад
@roejogan8 No, REM is kind of boring to me... Depeche Mode is way better and still going strong and selling out stadiums around the world without great media attention.... REM is retired now bc they ran out of ideas 20 years ago lol
@captainadam1
