The full, uncut acceptance speeches from all members of Cheap Trick - Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Friday, April 8, 2016.
*Cheap Trick= Still of the hardest working bands in the past 45 years, if there's any band that through non stop touring and paying their dues to make it in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame it's this band!*
If they didn't deserve it who really does? They are that good. New Years Eve was their San Diego gig pretty much every year for at least a decade that I know of. It's just how they rolled and that was cool. Studio albums are great but Budokan gained them followers they didn't have before. I remember the first time a friend got me to listen to them. Yep. Way overdue.
I saw them at a Flower Festival in Dallas!! I was so thrilled! My go to band since I was a teen singing Surrender in my room in the late 70s!! Love them!
You’re not kidding! They should have been there years ago and had a better person to induct them. However, it’s about damn time!!!! Only Chicago and it suburbs could create this band… blues, rock, crooners, punk, are in our dna … loved them since day one… #HomeGirl
Gotta be one of, if not THE hardest working band in the business ! Think about how many casinos, fairgrounds and festivals they have played🤷🏻♀️ probably thousands in just the last 2 years !?
How'd they fire him, he won the lawsuit. Judge said he gets an equal share in making decisions about the band. I think it's hilarious that the three Robin, Tom and Rick had to shell out millions in a lawsuit and that's not including attorney fees.
Bun E. Carlos is the #1 reason I started playing the drums and eventually professionally (for a brief few years). I’ll never forget meeting him and the band when I was 14y old. Tom is absolutely right, rock has been a constant connection for both my son (who has autism) and myself. Never has a band been so deserving of an induction.
What a disgrace for them , The Rock in roll hall of fame is mostly all hip hop and rap , what a joke for any rock artist to be associated with that place
This band has got C-L-A-S-S. Saw them at a County Fair, at a Street Festival and Pine Knob/Detroit and will never forget Rick taking the time to recognize the greatness of his singer, Robin. "Isn't he just the finest singer, what an amazing voice..." or something laudatory like that. All hail to a great rockin' band.
Cheap Trick, your music was a part of me growing up. Your music is inspiring to millions! Thank for making so many lives and teen years a great one. I could not imagine a world without the music that came out of our eras. We truly got to walk amongst giants.
I saw them in concert at a local University in MD before radio stations really started playing their music. They were a part of my teen years along with Styx, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Aerosmith, Rush. Looking back on those years, my biggest regret is not going to more concerts thinking "I'll see them next time they come to town". Ughh.
@callyharley Reports stated it started over Bun and Zander not agreeing on the amount of shows they planned on doing in Vegas.. Bun wanted 100 and Zander wanted 50 because he wanted to take his child to kindergarten in the fall. Bun made a comment he didn't like Zander then forced him out by getting approval of the other 2 bandmates. It cost them plenty as Bun sued and settled for 25% of back royalties and future earnings plus he still has a say in the band. Several weeks before the Hall of fame appearance Rick said some nasty things about him but you would not know it on stage.
As a person hailing from Rockford, this both touched my heart and encouraged me to keep following my dreams! Thank you Cheap Trick, may God continue to bless you! :)
Yes, as a fan since 1979 I can imagine how u feel coming from a small city. Perth , Australia can claim the great Bon Scott and INXS but nobody going at the moment like u guys.
They just made it to the Library of Congress; “Live At Budokan” is now part of the National Recording Registry. And the honors keep coming, and coming, and coming...
Without Bun E. Carlos, this group isn't the same Cheap Trick I remember hearing in Rockford back in the day. Miss his drumming magic. Anyway, congrats to CT for finally being inducted into the R and R Hall of Fame.
Mine too, Kim! July 9th 1982 Market Square Arena, Indianapolis IN! Aldo Nova and Saxon opened for them. I met the band last year and told them about my first concert and Robin apologized for it! :)
LEGENDS. I had the opportunity to talk to Robin for a long time w/my friends and it was one of the best experiences of our lives. Humble, handsome, smart, and just a regular guy with a kick ass voice. Love this band so much!!!! Great speeches! Yay Bun!
Laurie Lees sooooo jealous you got to talk to RZ, but thank you for confirming how cool he is. It sucks when you meet someone you admire and they turn out to be total asshats. Glad Robin is as awesome as his vocals!
Cheap Trick's entire career has been writing infectious, effortless, catchy and fun rock that you can't get out of your head. People pass that up as frivolous or easy. Yeah, it's not, that's why there's 10,000 angsty, dissonant bands and just one or two bands a generation that write like Cheap Trick, or even can. Try it sometime....just try to write a "Surrender". Anyone can emote and play fast. Write an anthem that no one will ever forget.
I remember the buzz of Cheap Trick came on strong in my San Diego neighborhood. The year around1978 and I was around 12 years old. There must have been around 10 kids from my neighborhood who went to see them in concert at the Civic Center. My brother caught one of the many picks Rick flung out to the exalted audience. Leslie, the hot chick, on somebody’s shoulders. It was like the kids from the Sandlot go to their first good rock n roll concert. It was pre-teen bliss. I’ve been to a lot of concerts since then: The Who, The Stones, Elvis Costello, Wilco, to name a few. But I’ll always remember that Cheap Trick concert as one of the best. They are a great live band.
years ago I went to see ZZ top, cheap trick opened for them. When cheap trick was done, I left. no further entertainment would ever come close. thanks for the great times Cheap Trick
Their new album “In Another World” rocks! They still are kicking royal ass. Robin doesn’t sound any different. Monster vocalist. Great songs. Thanks guys!
I met these guys in Hammond, Indiana just after John Lennon was murdered. They were friendly, signed autographs and let us take pictures. The best melodies. Thanks Cheap. We were from Michigan City, Indiana.
@@Formula-602 Bun E and Rick play with Lennon on an alternate version of "I'm Losing You" recorded on August 12 1980, slated for "Double Fantasy" but replaced. Here's that version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BZae6fbxItI.html
Saw them in concert one week ago. What an awesome experience! Incredibly gifted and hard working band. Thank you for all the great music through the years. Budokan was the first album that I ever bought.
Cheap Trick's "One On One" was the album that made me a rock fan at age 9. And Robin Zander made my tummy feel funny, lol. I still listen to them nearly every day. One of the best bands ever!!!
Robin's speech is one of the most sincere, humble, and moving of any in RRHF history; and well orated. Each of the members spoke kindly, and sincerly, there speeches were interesting and personable; and that they were all gracious, as well as congratulatory and/or complementary of so many others speaks volumes about them; it is definietly part of the readon for their longevity in the industry. Cheap Trick as a whole had always seemed like a band of really nice, be good, solid, hard working, and entertaining guys from Illinois, who loved music and wanted to share it with everyone. Such a unique and amazing group, from each band member, to their sound, and evey song. This is how its done, and its why they are so beloved.
I saw that gig here....Got to burn one with Bun on the bus afterwards..then,we went out ..and watched DL stage left..behind the metal crowd barrier...12,000 looking at us up there!
CONGRATULATIONS Cheap Trick!!! You have deserved this honor for so many years. Love love you CHEAP TRICK!!!!! I was 13 when I first heard I want you to want me. Great unique sound in concert. Genuine group with awesome talent and stage presence. Been to many of your concerts through the decades. Your 🎵 has been a large part of my life for 40 years. Thank you for sharing your lives with us, your fans. Much love.
That speech he made was legendary lol rrhof what a joke cheap trick dont need anyone to tell them they rock....they just do it And the same goes for steve ....he is rocknroll
On the 1st of September 1990 I saw my first live concert. It was Cheap Trick and the Angels. In a small town called Hobart, Tasmania. I was 13 and it blew my mind. Thanks guys.
Cheap Trick should give every garage band from every small town hope that they can be as big as Kiss just playing great rock for yourself, your mates, and especially your fans. It's the best story in Rock.
I was lucky to have met all the members when I lived in Rockford and ran a music shop. Went to a lot of the river front festivals where Cheap Trick always agreed to play for the home town fans. Thanks guys. You were the pride of Rockford.
Why don't you do a Netflix, Amazon or HBO special on your story about Cheap Trick in Rockford back in the day? I can write a script. And I'm sure Cheap Trick would work with you on the project if they were compensated. Lets go back to the late 1970's and start there. I Want you to want me......
A very lucky audience. Usually these things are botched and sitting through it is torture, but not this event. Great examples of coherent, intelligent public speaking.
In general, that's been my impression, but I didn't waste much time hanging around to confirm it. When George Carlin started getting blue in the face with curse words, and yet, his popularity went up, the tide had plainly gone out.
I saw them in their early touring days, at the Santa Monica Civic Aud. What an epic concert. Their popularity catapulted and moved them to the larger arenas and followed them to the fabulous Forum shows. Love me some Cheap Trick.
Cheap Trick added so much to my life growing up in college and Beyond. They were with me through Good Times, bad times , romantic times. Some of the best times of life for sure. Cheap Trick has stuck with me through all the seasons of my life , their music never gets old, but I do. That's a gift for sure. Glad to see their successes / hard work being honored so well, in there lifetime's, they deserve it. People will be listening to their music a thousand years from now. We all love Cheap Trick, they are in the Hall of Fame within our memories, hearts and souls.. Kid Rock it's a great guy to present this award.
If there was ever a band that created a name for themselves with sheer energy, extreme hard work and endurance, Cheap Trick would take the highest honors. From their very first album, the fans knew this was a fantastic band with an exceptional vocalist. Even though the music press at the time, and the music industry in general, couldn't deny their greatness, they never really supported this band. It was truly the raw talent of the band and the good taste and dedication of the fans that kept this band alive. If you were lucky enough to see them live in concert during the late 70s, then you can officially say that you got your ass rocked ... and experienced the true essence of Rock-&-Roll. Cheap Trick was indeed a 'motley crew, with two handsome guys, a zany clown and a cigar chomping perverted uncle, but together these guys rocked out in a frenzied, ferocious and furious abandon. Their chemistry was explosive. They came at a time when corporate rock was being created and controlled specifically for the money ... but Cheap Trick existed strictly for the music, and the fans knew this and appreciated this. There were many great bands in the late 70s, but in my humble opinion, Cheap Trick was by far the most respectable. Sure, they eventually had to cave in to "corporate rock" to stay afloat, but even then they still retained enough of their die-hard passion for blistering rock&roll to earn respect. Their true fans always understood this. Plus, even in the year of 2018, Robin Zander is still one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time.
Although I saw them live before the explosion of Budokan (I first saw them in 1977 when they opened for KISS on their first major US tour) but thankfully Japan saw something in them, and brought them to the entire world!!!!!!!!! Thank you Japan and thank you CT for being my musical soundtrack for over the past 45 years. 👍🎌🇯🇵
I’ve seen Cheap Trick every time they were in Milwaukee or just the area... I can’t count how many picks have hit me square in the face and have kept, but I don’t need to count how many shows kicked ass: ALL OF THEM.
I'm glad I seen them over six times in my growing up.. enjoy those years of many concerts being able to watch standing by the stage..wish I could turn back the clock..
My dads first and favorite car was a Pontiac Bonneville Convertible. My earliest picture was of me and him with the car. Thank you Cheap Trick for reminding of that car. Surrender, wow what a classic like the car.
One of the best bands in the world! Robin’s voice is imo in the top 5 best lead vocalists in the entire world!!!! And each member equally talented in their respective fields! Not enough words or adjectives to describe what this band means to me! A part of my history( saw them in the 80’s) and they were and are AWESOME !!! Heaven Tonight and The Flame are both musical perfection in every way! God bless you guys and congratulations! MS loves you!
Oh! This IS the Cheap Trick Channel! Well, thank you for posting this you guys.. and gals in your org! I played your records.. ON the radio.. would be 38 years ago. You were always exciting to listen to then. Thanks again!
In Color and Black & White was always my favorite album. Saw them at their first live appearance in Austin,Texas at Manor Downs. They were awesome and so underrated at the time. Glad you guys made it.
Guys I got every single one of your cd's and some great bootlegs too. I am so glad you made it and that you keep playing and releasing great music. You inspired me very early in my own music "career". It's really a beautiful thing to see you inducted. Congrats!!!!
Was lucky to see this amazing rock band at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, Ct (3-25-80) early in their concert days. The kids waiting to get in the theater were lined up all they way around the block - the concert was outstanding. It was a great time to be alive and seeing all the great musicians then. Congratulations Cheap Trick - you so deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Keep on Rockin'!
I remember a friend and I figured out where Brad Delp from "Boston" lived. He was braver than I was and knocked on his door one day. Brad invited him in and they talked for an hour or so. As he left, Delp said, "There's a band coming soon that's going to blow you away. They're called "Cheap Trick." Watch out for them!" The next day I went out and found their first album and from that day forward and until today, Cheap Trick was. and is, my favorite band. I've seen them 9 times! Love you guys!
You are the best cheap trick. From Steve McCarthy in melbourne Victoria Australia. Surrender was the single that i heard of on the radio and i have been with you ever since...CHEAP TRICK..THE BEST.
