That certain sound...I remember lots of live shows 84-89 or so when they had it going on (if you saw them then, you know). Loved all of the rest since then too, but something was special about the simple, lyrical, powerful and affecting songs on Chronic Town, Murmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction and Life's Rich Pageant. I liked or loved Green and all the rest up to Collapse into Now, but for me, the first five were the essence of R.E.M.
Yeah, "Chronic Town" and the first 4 are my faves! I'm so glad they remastered "Chronic Town" and re-released that but I wish they would remaster "Dead Letter Office". Their covers of the 3 Velvets songs on there was how I discovered The Velvet Underground. Their cover of Pylon's "Crazy" is also a fave!
Later when they bought their own individual houses Michael and Mike each bought a house that share the same back yard. As far as I know they have never sold either house for this exact reason. Cool to walk out in your backyard and there is your best friend and band mate!
This is clearly a 3am "we've finally got the mix!" mix, before listening the next day and realising they've got the bass on the left fucking channel only. Peter's guitars have more presence here but they would, wouldn't they, in the circumstances. The final mix of Murmur is perfect, they got there in the end!
No it’s a beautiful campus, but I’m an LSU Tiger, so I have no love for the bulldogs. Unless y’all are playing Florida, Alabama, or anyone outside the SEC
