To me, this is the holy grail. A pristine recording of my favorite REM tune, Skank, the show stopper from the first six or eight times I saw them. Sourced from the 1987 unofficial LP. Pretty Pictures. It was recorded on 11-09-1983 at Rhythmic Rivers Studio in San Francisco. They put their heart and soul into it in just like they did every time I heard them play it live. Presented for historical and documentary purposes only. All rights remain with the copyright holder.

I am shocked they still played this in 1987, even moreso that they tried to put this down in the studio. It is a great tune, though. Always loved it when they closed shows with it during that 1982 tour.

It was the showstopper the first six or eight times I saw them. I sure didn't hear it in '87 but I would have loved to. I think in their minds, 9-9 was it's replacement. It's kind of like Skank played sideways.

Dude my bad. i was looking back over this and it was a typo. It was 1983 not 1987. I must have been high when I composed that first reply. I really love the Reckoning era. I can't believe I did that.

Pristine? There is a far better sounding recording of this from the show at Merlin's in 1982

The Merlin's show is a great tape. I have that and love it. The Skank is a medley with Stumble, right? What I meant by pristine is that they were doing it in a studio as if they were going to put it on a record. Clean. Now the tape that was used to make the boot LP was a dub of a dub of a dub, so the tape hiss is tremendous but the original studio recording must be spectacular. I've since learned that they were going to make some of this session an extra on the 25th anniversary edition of Reckoning but couldn't locate the master in time.
