I remember when this song broke into the playlist on the CHR station I was working at in 1988. I couldn't get enough of it. Neither could our listeners. It was probably the number one requested song from our callers over the course of a three month period...

@@gordonlove5121 I do miss the days of radio stations and record companies that would sign, invest in, record and promote new talent. That is how my Program Director, at the time, got a copy of Stand from a still uknown, underground garage band called REM. If it wasn't for record company promotion and investment, and the wealth that eventually flowed REM's way, the system would not have worked. Unfortunately, when people really stopped paying for new music, the system collapsed.
@BillBird2111
@BillBird2111 Год назад
@@gordonlove5121 I also recall, from my CHR Radio format days, that this song was barely two minutes in length when it first hit. It was a really iconic tune that didn't last nearly long enough, which is what I thought at the time during my never-ending ovenight shifts as a DJ. Still, once it got into the A or HOT rotation, it played at least once every 1.5 to two hours.

This song went to number 6 on the Billboard 100! And yet based on the number of views, has not aged as one of REM's classics in most people's views. For me, Green was the first REM album I had (on cassette), so this, Orange Crush, and Pop Song 89 will always be among my favorite singles by them.

Yeah but you're basing it on some rando yt channel that has a 29th gen pixelated copy of a copy of a copy. Stand is regarded highly..... gpt4o…. To rank "Stand" among R.E.M.’s top songs, we need to consider several factors: chart performance, critical acclaim, cultural impact, and fan reception. Here’s a comprehensive ranking based on these criteria, including "Stand" and other major R.E.M. hits: R.E.M.'s Top Songs Ranked "Losing My Religion" (1991) Album: Out of Time Chart Performance: #4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #1 on multiple international charts. Critical Acclaim: Universally regarded as R.E.M.’s signature song. It earned Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance and Best Music Video. Cultural Impact: Defined R.E.M.'s career, with an iconic music video that is heavily referenced in pop culture. Fan Reception: Continues to be a favorite in live performances and among fans. "Everybody Hurts" (1992) Album: Automatic for the People Chart Performance: Top 10 in the UK, US, and several other countries. Critical Acclaim: Acclaimed for its emotional depth and powerful message. Frequently listed in "greatest songs" rankings. Cultural Impact: Used widely in media and as a symbol of hope and solace. Fan Reception: A go-to song for comfort and healing among listeners. "Man on the Moon" (1992) Album: Automatic for the People Chart Performance: #30 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, top 10 in the UK and Canada. Critical Acclaim: Celebrated for its lyrical tribute to comedian Andy Kaufman and its lasting appeal. Cultural Impact: Title track for the 1999 biopic about Kaufman starring Jim Carrey. Fan Reception: A concert staple and beloved for its storytelling and melody. "The One I Love" (1987) Album: Document Chart Performance: #9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, top 10 in Canada. Critical Acclaim: Marked a significant breakthrough for R.E.M. into mainstream rock. Cultural Impact: Often considered one of the quintessential alternative rock tracks of the 80s. Fan Reception: Known for its powerful simplicity and memorable chorus, it's a favorite in their setlists. "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" (1987) Album: Document Chart Performance: Moderate chart success initially, peaking at #69 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, but later resurged in popularity. Critical Acclaim: Praised for its rapid-fire lyrics and energy. Cultural Impact: Iconic during times of upheaval, with renewed relevance in various historical moments. Fan Reception: Known for its tongue-twisting lyrics and frequently a highlight at concerts. "Stand" (1988) Album: Green Chart Performance: #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks. Critical Acclaim: Recognized as one of R.E.M.’s catchiest and most accessible songs. Cultural Impact: Widely featured in media, including the TV show "Get a Life" and the game Lego Rock Band. Fan Reception: Its playful, upbeat nature makes it a beloved track among fans. "Shiny Happy People" (1991) Album: Out of Time Chart Performance: #10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, top 10 in multiple countries. Critical Acclaim: Although seen as a departure from their usual style, it's appreciated for its pop sensibilities. Cultural Impact: Its joyful, almost whimsical nature makes it a memorable part of R.E.M.’s repertoire. Fan Reception: Mixed reactions from fans, but undeniable for its widespread popularity. "Orange Crush" (1988) Album: Green Chart Performance: #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks, but not released as a commercial single in the U.S. Critical Acclaim: Known for its political themes and strong, driving beat. Cultural Impact: An important part of their live shows, often viewed as an anti-war anthem. Fan Reception: A fan favorite for its energetic and intense delivery. "Radio Free Europe" (1981) Album: Murmur Chart Performance: #78 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (re-recorded version). Critical Acclaim: Credited with launching R.E.M.’s career and helping define the alternative rock genre. Cultural Impact: Seen as a seminal track in the development of indie and alternative music. Fan Reception: Cherished by long-time fans for its historical significance and raw energy. "Drive" (1992) Album: Automatic for the People Chart Performance: #28 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks. Critical Acclaim: Noted for its dark, brooding atmosphere and intricate production. Cultural Impact: A key track that showcased R.E.M.'s evolution in sound and lyrical depth. Fan Reception: Appreciated for its introspective quality and dynamic live performances. Summary: "Stand" ranks solidly among R.E.M.'s top songs, coming in at #6 in this list. It is celebrated for its upbeat, pop-infused sound and significant chart success. However, other tracks like "Losing My Religion," "Everybody Hurts," and "Man on the Moon" rank higher due to their profound impact, deeper emotional resonance, and broader critical acclaim. These rankings reflect a blend of commercial success, critical appreciation, and the lasting legacy each song has left in the world of music.

There was a time, while growing up in the mid eighties in London that anything from the States ( bar the Cramps) was just NOT hip, we had New Romantics, Futurists, Goth etc....such was the obsession with image; a band had to 'look' right, have the right haircut...these guys were therefore overlooked by many as they displayed none of those facets, were almost 'non image conscious'...But as they proved, REM compiled an opus of music which far outlasted any of their UK contemporary 'vanity projects' in the UK (with possible exceptions of the Smiths)..This song is in a remarkable period which started with 'The One I love'....truly amazing.
@Eric_In_SF
@Eric_In_SF Месяц назад
get real. Takling Heads, The Pixies, Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth, Replacements, Jesus and Mary Chain, Minuteman, Butthole Surfers all had pretty solid followings in the UK and all considered pretty hip. Not to mention mainstream acts like Madonna or Prince and Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner all had massive chart topping success year after year in the UK. Not as hip but such is pop music.

Anyone else finding themselves going through some old familiar songs then you start realizing how fast time has gone by. I have been thinking, feeling and expressing my passion for music and life on and off for the last few days ( trying not to share one negative thought or put down) and I think it put a end to my midlife crisis that I was in self denial about. Hahaa. I have always been a deep thinker and poetic music like REM helps put my thoughts into focus while blending in my emotions into the mix of it all. Nothing can come close to the unique quality that is REM. ✌️I want to see more of the youth getting into new school folk music all over again 💙

The interesting thing is that Catherine de Hueck Doherty, a Catholic spiritual writer and teacher, as well as many Buddhist teachers would say "Stand still, listen, and be aware." Where you go, there you are. I'm playing this song as a prayer for my class. Yes, the lyrics are simple but I think that's the point.

I love how when they say carry a compass..and they don't show a magnetic compass, but a I guess drafting compass. Also notice how in the video when they say now face north or west they face another direction. Great! I bet they had fun making this vid. (it's the little things!)
