when i first heard "up", i thought it was o.k., and actually thought that it sounded uninspired. however, after listening to it more i realized it was an melancholy masterpiece. i love the album. i think its one of their best. its so understated and sadly underrated.
Agreed. No one like R.E.M. to have so much success while simultaneously being overlooked.. Michael kills this song and everyone in the Band is a Genius. 'Up' is just as brilliant as the rest of their albums
I think Up is R.E.M.'s most underrated and best album. I wish Michael would sing in falsetto more. On the album version, when he sings "You're so naked baby" in falsetto it sounds great.
UP is such an odd little nugget. The culmination of reeling in horror from the departure of Bill Berry... and then trying to make a new record with a "Pet Sounds" kind of feel. Suspicion is a fantastic song.. One of my favorites of the Warner Bros. Years.
completely underrated. i could listen over and over. it would have been huge but they don't really care about gettin on Mtv. if ya could call it that. sixteenandpregnantt.v.. saptv
why is this song not in the top 10 of REM???? Its slow, but comes from my favorite REM album and is a classic. I wish they would play it in the shows and it deserves more recognition. UP is severly underrated and they should be proud of it, its better than the patchy OUT OF TIME and is the essence of what they are all about
In a way, Suspicion seems like a link to Bill Berry's previous contributions with R.E.M. It bears some resemblance to Tongue from their Monster album in its dreamy , sexy way. Yet again it's a disappointment that it isn't more well known. I suppose that many people don't like to be slowly seduced- they probably find it insidious. This is still a fantastic track - a brilliant and lengthy tease with a magical pay off at the end of strings where a New Test Leper kind of instrumentation emerges.
@simmy403 up is so wonderful.listen on the beach somewhere.i had to respond cause "you're so naked baby" might be the one best lyrics they have ever done for some reason
@robpen954 right there with ya. funny, r.e.m. and the mats were my top 2 growing up too. we used to have a saying. PWIG: paul westerberg is God. Buck on Let It Be and a tour together. I would have loved to seen THAT!
I don't have this version... weird. I mean, I downloaded the album Up (because, fuck, I can't find it anywhere) but the rhythm is not the same of this one.
I think "At My Most Beautiful" is a little bit obvious and shallow. Something that a 6th grader would write - but maybe that's part of its charm. I always liked "UP" and kind of compared it to U2's "Zooropa". It sucks that REM doesn't seem proud of this album - it's a fine album. Suspicioun is my favorite song off the album but this version isn't as pretty as the album cut.
