My dad fixed printers, copiers and occasionally typewriters. While fixing a copier, he found out someone jammed the toner cartridge in *wrong*. When he tried to remove it, it exploded toner ALL over his workshop floor, just like that post. He was swearing so colourfully and like that pic floating around the net, he left an imprint on the floor. I laughed so hard.
@@shuriken5017 It's a video about r/hardwaregore, they told a story about hardware gore. "Who asked?" is for when what the person said has absolutely nothing to do with the subject matter.
4:56 My dad works at the US Attorney's Office as the System Manager, and they will shred the disks, shred iPhones, and any storage device when they finish using it. I saw a box of like 30-40 iPhone 6 before they were sent off to be shredded.
Thanks, EmKay! I now have the image of "a very enthusiastic sneeze in the general direction of whatever that carpet is" playing in my mind... Now I can't see anything, as the carpet has turned into a dust cloud!
@@The_big_prooooo I feel worse for the maxtor drives being used as desk levelers the shade throwing at those poor things never ends maxtors always try their best only to be bullied when they come up short they can't help it
14:56 pretty sure that one is actually a cake!! i remember hearing something about that. that would be why the keyboard is crumbly rather than... melted or normally destroyed
The best part about eating computer chips with dip is the crunch and the nice tingly after taste it leaves in your mouth🤤. Another notable mention is the internal bleeding it causes, yum yum 😋.
@Ted Leather I'm not one for internal bleeding, so I enjoy my computer chips with a glass of battery acid to melt off the sharp edges... and also everything else.
We know buddy. It is awesome none the less. The title of the song is "All Bets Are Off", by Kristopher Maddigan. Great observation though! I think that game is a bit to easy tho
I know every time it starts I start singing iiiiiim mr king dice the most gamest in the land iiiiiiiii do not play nice I’m the devils right hand man. I was watching emkay I’m public once I got a lot of funny looks
As soon as I saw this was r/Hardwargore I hoped it would be Lexi narrating and I was not disappointed! Her tech knowledge and experience make this subreddit so much fun!
As a tech repair guy, I hate this… But tbh, the people who soldered BGA chips wire by wire is wicked impressive! I’m also making the image at 8:00 my wallpaper. 11:19 It will run. It happened to me, there is a space for the screw on the logic board.
9:47 for other reference, a Formula 1 car engine is capable of running up to 20,000 RPM (though the rules now limit them to only run 15,000 in competition), so that fan is about 2.5× faster than an F1 car
My computer class teacher used to fix computers and this woman came in saying the cup holder was broken and the pc was broken. Apparently she had used the cd drive to hold their cup and naturally the cd drive was not able to carry that weight and broke, tons of coffee spilled into the computer
Fun fact: the older gen nintendo DS can be broken in half at the hinge, and they will still work fine. I had a gen 1 DS that I busted on the hinges, and it worked fine for 12 years after.
@@timmyfartdo Yeah, I got annoyed and tried snapping it in half, but stopped myself before I finished... I wrapped a bit of electrical tape around it worked fine. I couldn't fold the screen down, but it was otherwise fine.
Low-key am kind of ecstatic to see that Lexi is an IT person. I was ready to hyper analyze all of the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised lol. Onya, Lexi!
I repair game consoles for work. We've had some impressively nasty consoles over the years. There are a couple in particular that stand out as the worst though. The first was a literally roached out PS3. It was filled with dead roaches. The other was one that someone had setup next to their cat's litterbox. There was water damage from cat pee in the console. After those consoles, we implemented a new policy. If I need to shower and deep clean my workspace after working on your console, we charge double.
Oh my god... I used to repair other student's PCs and one was full of dead mice and fapkins... I took the PC back to school and then slammed down the clear bag of mice and fapkins infront of him with the whole class looking... Not only was I disgusted and embarrassed to have worked on it, I bet this boy was extremely embarrassed for being exposed in front of the class!
Funny how a human mind can render a complete 3D image with nearly infinitesimally small details or create graphic effects more flashy than the highest skilled VFX artists in less than a second.
Hi Lexi, thanks for the video. A little something here: the laptop you couldn't identify with the pink screen of death is from Medion. It's a german computermaker which got known in the 2000s for beeing sold on the discounter ALDI and beeing surprisingly good for their price. One of my first stationary Rigs was one of those.
12:42 For those who don't know, that's called an Alphabetical Keyboard layout. It's not very common, but it's there for those who have never typed before, or at least don't have much experience with it. If this person had that particular keyboard layout installed in their OS settings, they can switch to it and get back to work until they can find the time to switch the keys back.
Gluing heat sinks used to be a thing. You could get thermal epoxy and stick that black-anodized pentium 1 sink right on there forever. In the 486-era heat sinks were barely necessary and thermal paste wasn't even used.
9:34 The brand is called Medion (I know, kind of hard to see in this picture). Actually a fairly decent budget brand. Had one for years. But desktop, not laptop.
Okay so, a job I had shortly out of high school with a small business that makes candy. They decided that they needed to move to a larger location to be able to efficiently produce candy and to be fair they were in the bottom floor of what was essentially a New York brownstone. As we were packing we found a desktop computer and I was the only one with any sort of computer knowledge so it became my job to get into the thing. So we plugged it in and tried to turn it on and nope no power, so I popped the case off the tower and, I kid you not there was two inches of corn starch and sugar dust caked on everything in the tower. Took it and the monitor across the street to an auto-body shop to use their air compressor to blow it out and when we did get it to boot up it smelt like a bakery.
8:50 you'd love my old garage laptop lmao. poor thing had scratches and dents, paint everywhere, and i'm pretty sure some of the keys contained more sawdust than the average rice crispie square
We've all eaten at our desks before. There are probably many crumbs in my keyboard' Me: *Looks down at keyboard* "Well there's a couple but I don't feel as bad about that anymore"
Lexi: "2000W, that'd probably pop a 15A breaker" Me: Another reason to be glad I don't live in the US. On 230v it's only 8.something amps, which is plenty lower than the 13A most domestic outlets are rated for here. Edit: Lexi, that laptop brand you weren't sure about was Medion.
14:56 Looks like someone poured acetone or probably a stronger solvent on the monitor and it just melted everything it touched. If it wasn't on purpose it might have been a particularly strong solvent to that type of plastic that someone splashed on their monitor planning to clean it. Just that splashing part sounds like a dumb idea, but so does using a random cleaning liquid on your monitor.
The fallen server reminded me of the scene from TNG "The Naked Now" when Data had to quickly put all the isolinear chips back in the engineering computer.
I used to be briefly in computer tech so a lot of these were interesting. But most of my crazy stories came from being a phone tech. My most favorite one was a guy called me on a business trip in Turkey when the worldwide Samsung Note 5 recalls came down And none of the airplanes would accept Note 5 on board. He called me here in the states and asked how was he supposed to get home without his phone. And I told him if the Turkish people wouldn't let them bring it on the plane, he would have to dump it (as they probably also wouldn't let him mail it either). But I had him follow up with me afterwards (to process the claim). And he told me he smuggled it past Turkish customs and the US customs back into the United states... Which that action is just normally reserved for highly illegal stuff, not cellphones, but Note 5 did tend to catch on fire. But for the guy to actually smuggle it past both Turkish customs and US customs to get it back into the states was interesting and wild 😜...
I worked in phone tech support, too, and yeah, some people would do _anything_ to not be without their phone. Anything _except_ buy a backup phone, that is. I lost count of the number of people who claimed their time was worth hundreds or thousands of dollars and if I didn't fix the phone (or the network) NOW, they would sue us for lost revenue. Like, if your time is that valuable, why don't you own multiple phones on different networks, just in case? You could obviously afford it...if you weren't lying. The best was when I offered a woman 13 cents for the time that Blackberry's data was down. I did the math and the time the system was down on 30-dollar-per-month data plan was 12.5 cents, which I rounded up. She asked for a supervisor. The supervisor offered her 12 cents because she rounded it down.
@@plumjet09 was it? Perhaps it was then. Tbh, I went too many rounds with phones to remember. I was there for nearly 7 years, and the amount of phone cycles were staggering to remember all the details. Would you like for me to correct it in my original post?
Lexi episodes never cease to amaze me especially when they are about hardwaregore. Eventho i almost started crying halfway through it was still entertaining
funniest part about watching these videos while understanding nothing about hardware is hearing the pain in Lexi’s voice while looking at something completely mundane
I'm gonna be honest, the lack of subreddit intro and fan art has not improved the videos at all. EmKay industries is lucky to have narrators like Lexi to keep me coming back.
@@minecraftyeli Well they hearted some guys comment on one of there newer videos saying "Intros and outros dont need to come back. Without them, it speeds up the video" im paraphrasing a bit. Take that for what you will
4:50 just throw the control board in the salt water as well. The salt water will eat away at the traces. Rendering it useless. How do I know? Well I have disposed of a few hard drives before. Sometimes let them sit overnight. Also Lexi that hard drive platter coaster is something I relate to as well. I have 2 on my desk.
2:40 You could just, like, take AAA batteries and put aluminum foil on one side of it to make it fit in the controller?? It’s even easier with a 360 than a One or a Series X
For those curious, Medion is Aldi's/Hofer's "computer brand". They sell several generation old hardware, act as if it is the latest and greatest at the best possible price. They're also extremely prone to hardware defects.
8:37 I have done that unironically, so allow me to explain. That is the CPU heatsink after the fan is removed. Mine looked exactly like that. The solution is basically to bathe the heat sink in water before drying it, and clean the fan as much as possible since the blades are usually caked.
6:35 As a tech/IT person myself, I hate replacing things, particularly if you can still make do with it. Nowadays, so many products are designed to die 1-2 days after their warranty expires, so when you find something that still works, celebrate that. Also, tinkering and improvising to keep things going is fun and good practice.
11:21Fun fact: Nintendo DS systems are surprisingly resilient, despite how delicate they look. I had one that had banana in the charging port, which I attempted to wash out with water (I was NINE YEARS OLD, OKAY?!), and surprisingly it continued to function pretty well until I upgraded to a 2DS. I still have the 2DS, as well. Battery's probably perma-dead, though.
