“ on a drunk “ isn’t a British colloquial saying ,what he saying is “ and the only time he’s satisfied is when he’s all drunk “ ( and there were so many drugs around in 1964 ,flower power ,peace and love)
Eric Burdon was 24 years old. Born May 11, 1941. This song was recorded in one take in 1964. My all time favorite singer throughout the the years. He is 82 years old now, and still alive.
RIP Hilton ❤️🙏😢 What an amazing guitarist & pioneer . Animals singer Eric Burdon wrote on social media Friday, “The opening opus of Rising Sun will never sound the same!… You didn’t just play it, you lived it! Heartbroken by the sudden news of Hilton’s passing. We had great times together, Geordie lad. From the North Shields to the entire world…Rock In Peace.”
Comes to mind the song SkyPilot from the same viet cong war era. Maybe a touch too much for Many...these days. Hell broke luce is a more recent rendition of such efforts and the fallout therefrom. Thank you Billy and ...thank Mr Tom Waits.😁
Thank you Billy for doing this request.....I promise you will not be disappointed and the song will explain why many of us considered the Animals among the gods of Rock n' Roll. This is one of my favorite songs from them. Thanks again!!! Enjoy!!!! And yeah....1955....when I was born.
Hey the coolest king ever. Little known fact the lead singer Eric Burdon had a backup band who became one of the great funk bands of the 70s called War (who did Low Rider, Slipping Into Darkness and Why Can't We Be Friends) with the big hit Spill The Wine and the bassist Chas Chandler discovered and worked with Him Hendrix
@Damien Paxton: Hm. I'm not too sure about that. Have you noticed the keyboard was standing next to the drum set in the beginning and by the end it was in front of the band.
@@rebapuck5061 The history of some big hit songs are amazing . Some songs were not expected to go anywhere and were put on the back a favorite song (records)...
Im and older Woman turn 65 this year I was 9 years old when I heard this song for the first time, I dont understand english back then but Erics voice blown me a way and that keyboard if it is what it is , are out of this world . I still love this song so much and what voice from a so young man .
This is the first rock song I remember ever hearing. Dad was stationed in Germany, 1964. The landlord's son played this record over and over. Sometimes it makes me feel 8 again. When he's on a drunk.
@@p.millard557 yes it is. This was considered rock and roll in 1964. This is not what you think of traditional rock and roll of the 1950's like Chuck Berry or Little Richard or Bill Haley & the Comets. This was 1960s rock and roll despite having a sound infused with Blues
1964 !! this is the best quality video i have ever seen from the early days by far. i was 11 when this hit the charts then and what can you say ? a fan instantly and for life. i saw lead vocalist eric burdon and the new animals about 10 years ago in a small theater in great barrington , mass. he obviously was old and looked nothing like he does here but his vocals were still spot on. great band - great show
The tall red headed guitarist is Chaz Chandler. He discovered a little known Artist and tried to make the guy famous. You may have heard of this guy he discovered long ago.His name was Jimmi Hendrix.Yep,he discovered Jimmi Hendrix
Now the only thing a gambler need, Is a suitcase and a trunk And the only time he's satisfied Is when he's all Drunk. Some think he says on a drunk, but it's actually is when he's all drunk
The lyrics are over a hundred years old. There is some dispute over if the “Rising Sun” was a real place and was a whore house or if it just refers to bars in general. In 1925 it was already a “classic”.
The House of the Rising Sun was and is the Orleans Parish lock up in downtown New Orleans, ergo the line "to wear that ball and chain". Passed it most every day in the way to work when we still lived in The City
@@benwhittington2164 , lol no it wasn't. Listen to the lyrics. It's been the ruin of many a poor boy. How would the parish lockup be in that diescription? Historic records do mention a speakeasy that went by the same name. Now speakeasy's were the ruin of many.
Eric burdon vocal.Chas chandler bass.Hilton Valentine guitar. John steel drums. Alan price keyboard.Chas died several years ago. Hilton died 1 29 21.last Friday.Alan left the band in 1966. Eric still performs.check out winds of change album from 1968.the best band to come out of the British invasion of the 1960s.
It's so crazy to think how this song brought together several generations in this comment section. Some people here were already in their teens when it came out and here I am watching this video with them even though the song was 32 years old by the time I was born. Amazing
Wasn't born until 1970 but still have my dad's Animals albums. "The only thing a gambler needs is a suitcase and a trunk, and the only time he's satisfied is when he's on a drunk"
The song is originally written about a GIRL who gets sweet-talked into running away from home, only to end up supporting HIS drinking and gambling habits by working in a famous New Orleans brothel known as The House of the Rising Sun. It's a cautionary tale begging mamas not to let your daughters end up "wearing that ball and chain."
there's a recent interview with Eric Burdon (the singer) here on RU-vid. He says the song was originally a traditional folk song from britain from the point of view of a woman who fell into working at a brothel. The animals translated it to a male perspective and moved the location to New Orleans. (... i have probably mangled the details .. but i think that's the gist of the origin) .. ps .. the animals produced the song while on tour with Chuck Berry. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N8bKL4nO9xE.html The Animals | Eric Burdon on Story of The House Of The Rising Sun | Pop Fix | Professor of Rock ps .. Eric Burdon (the singer) looks an awful lot he's Star Treck Spock's son.
Billy YSC, if you've not yet, check out some of The Animals greatest hits; We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, etc. Great old group. Not terribly prolific but they have five or six really great cuts.
i started residential school for native children in Canada at the age of 4 when this song came out....i love this song because of my childhood, brings back horrible at school and wonderful during the two months of freedom at home despite the alcoholism running rampant, We (my cousins and ) were free for 2months out of the year then....
The lore for the song is... No one knows the origins of the song...who wrote it...when it was written... The earliest recording of the song was sung by a female...and her lyrics were a little different than those that have been sung over the years... example...."mother's tell your children not to do what I have done"...her lyrics "mother tell my baby sister not to do what I have done. Live my life in sin and misery down in the rising sun" Which lead to the belief that The House of the rising sun was a whore house. I researched for weeks for information for a book.
My dad used to play this for me on his acoustic guitar when I was little, so I have always LOVED this song. One of my favorites of all time. Makes me miss him a lot.
If you’ve seen Goodfellas or Casino then you’ve heard this song as it’s one of Scorsese’s favorite songs to use in films. Also to hear more from the lead singer check out War’s “The World is a Ghetto “.
I love love watching you react Billy!!! I got a suggestion. Aretha Franklin performing at the Kennedy Center honoring Carole King who wrote what Aretha sings: (You Make me Feel like a) Natural Woman. I feel like this is so going to blow you away) :) Grab the Tissues for a very emotional performance.
I was a baby when this song came out in 1964, but it was a staple of Oldies Rock radio programming during the 1970s and 1980s as I was growing up. It's most likely not played that much on Oldies Rock radio stations today, since they focus their programming on a 30 to 40 year time frame.
I can't remember when I didn't know this song, my parents exposed me to a lot of this music when I was growing up in the 80's, I grew up listening to Music from the 60's and early 70's rather than music from the 80's and 90's
Every guitar player in the mid-sixties learned to play this guitar run. It is a very old song. I even heard that the roots of this blues song goes back to the 1930's but I also heard the poem may go back to the civil war. I cannot confirm, but this version is certainly the seminal version. It has been played in movies, and I saw Eric Burdon just a few years ago and he still belts out this song at an advanced age.
The Animals was a five piece band. Lead singer, guitarist, bass player, keys and drums. My dad was in a local band all of my childhood, and they played this song (along with many other songs from the 60’s and 70’s and country). I grew up on this song, even though 1964 was my parents early teens/late childhood. Makes me miss my daddy (he passed in 2012) when you’ve played all the old stuff lately, but also remember a great childhood. Thanks.
I am from New Orleans !!!! Cajun queen !!!!! Woooo love this song. Ok now please please please react to Eric Burden(lead singer) withe the band WAR Spill the wine. That will blow your young mind btw my father sang this as my lullaby. I was born in 1968 ! Thanks for your service !
You might recognize this song probably from Goodfellas or Casino. But think about this: 1964. The cinematographer was ahead of his time, as well as the band.
Mimed from their one take recording. This clip was filmed in 1964 or 65 as part of a UK colour film called Pop Gear for paying theatre release. This explains the early high quality color images we luckily have for this mimed from the record performance and also a few other top UK only music artists from when the film was made. RU-vid has quite a few segments from this UK movie Pop Gear with the US contribution being to re title it Go Go Mania and add a few intro segments to satisfy the US audience. A RU-vid search for Pop Gear Go Go Mania shows the segments : ru-vid.com?search_query=pop+gear+go+go+mania The intro by TCM explains the background of the film. While some of these segments were likely to be shown on US Colour TV much later , the source would originally be this high quality film. Rising Sun is the standout, but the Honeycombs with Have I the Right is a landmark too, In 1964 images not recorded on film would be much lower quality videotape, not the notable quality images used here. Especially with the inferior US NTSC standards often called Never The Same Colour. So lucky the film was made instead of relying on low standard video tape recordings that were usually taped over anyway to save tape cost money or made by filming a TV screen with poor quality results. I would be amazed to see any video recording from 1964 up to this standard of image quality. A better sound source can easily replace or lesser quality film track early source in RU-vid postings these days. These films mainly used mimed performances as the vast majority of theatre audiences wanted to hear the music performance as they knew it from the records. Hope this helps people who have the colorized and vidoetape theories that usually pop up.
There is a house in New Orleans They call The Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God, I know I'm one My mother was a tailor She sewed my new blue jeans My father was a gamblin' man Down in New Orleans Now the only thing a gambler needs Is a suitcase and a trunk And the only time he's satisfied Is when he's all drunk Oh mother, tell your children Not to do what I have done Spend your lives in sin and misery In the House of the Rising Sun Well, I got one foot on the platform The other foot on the train I'm goin' back to New Orleans To wear that ball and chain Well, there is a house in New Orleans They call The Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God, I know I'm one
in '64 i was 8 years old :) ... this is a song that is not suppose to make you feel good ... just like nothing good comes out of Nazareth ... nothing good comes out of the House of the Rising Sun (New Orleans) ...
I grew up with this song and I've never gotten tired of hearing it through the years. But recently I found a mashup of this song with another that I instantly fell for. I already loved the a cappella group that did the song I Kissed a Girl In the House of the Rising Sun. Two of the members of 7th Ave are Chris and Tristan Rupp. Chris and and his beatboxing brother Adam founded the group Home Free who are very popular now; Tristan is their sister. I hope you can react to the song. I don't think anyone has yet. Given the storyline of both songs this can get on the edge of being racy but the hot shirtless men and the girl on girl flirting are about it. (What can I say? I have a thing for Chris Rupp.)
Another case where the cover is way better than the original. This is a cover of a Woody Guthrie song. They shifted folk to blues improving the song immensely.
You weren't paying enough attention to notice that there were 5 members in the band, but you took the time to stop the video and mention that one of them looked like Marc somebody, and again to question the lyrics. Hush, and try to focus!
What he said was "Now the only thing a gamblin' man ever needs is a suitcase, Lord, and a trunk and the only time a fool like him is satisfied is when he's all stone cold drunk".
“The House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals. Their version is the best. Eric Burdon is still singing and the key player still plays. They had a reunion in 2011 without the original drum player. 2 of the 5 are gone, I think.
