Different though-the heater runs off of the temperature of the engine coolant whereas the AC runs off of a compressor. So AC cools down as soon as the compressor gets going(which is when you turn it on), but the heater core wont be hot until the coolant is. Unless you have electrically assisted heat, which some luxury cars do-they use an electric heater if you turn the heater on if the coolant isn't hot enough yet so you get instant heat. Also, how does using a heater freeze a car battery? That is not making sense. Unless you are referring to the increased power draw to run the fan causing an endothermic effect in the battery, but really if the car is already started that should effectively draw from the alternator and you shouldn't see a temperature effect on the battery.

@@jadedandbitter ​ Thanks for the correction. I didn't know that about the heater and coolant vs. the AC and compressor. Agreed. It took me a minute to realize why it didn't make sense. My wording ("using the heater too soon can even freeze the car battery") was sloppy and too quickly written. I mixed up the two different heaters and for whatever reason thought there was one heater (I need to go back home to Alaska. haha). One heater is for passengers and the other heater is for the battery. The passenger heater blasts icy cold air before the coolant warms (I'm trying to use the wording you taught me. Did I use it correctly?), and has nothing to do with the car battery freezing. There is a second heater specifically for the batteries. They look like short poles with 2-4 outlets on them. When we winterize our cars for the Arctic climate, they have special extension cords that peek out of the grill. We can plug the cords into these outlets that are all over Fairbanks and a few of the larger towns. If that battery's heater malfunctions, which is a regular problem, then the car battery dies within a minute or two of driving. And it's done; a tow truck has to come. Sometimes people can leave the car unplugged for 10-20 minutes on a -20F day without using an outlet, but the car will have to run for ten minutes before it is drivable because the battery is cold. If we try too early, and the battery isn't warm enough, then the battery dies. A fully charged battery is less likely to "freeze" or "die" than a partially charged one, so the battery heater is key. Once the engine is brought to temp, the battery will stay warm and therefore functional, but if the battery is cold it will not function well and will die, so it has to be directly heated until the engine warms up. @@aoitamashii I dont get it....I live in a place that gets decently hot in the summer (current temperature is 31 and not counting humdity).....and I can''t recall the AC blowing out hot air for longer than a minute Heaters on the other hand.....for someone reason, it takes a lot longer for the heater to warm up and blow hot air in the winter (especially in older cars)

@@bzomeful The heater in non-electric cars extracts the heat from the coolant system of the car. Especially in winter time, it takes a while for the coolant to warm up enough to provide sufficient heat. This is also why when a car is overheating, it helps to roll down the windows and blast the heater on high, to help extract more heat.

@@bzomeful Japan reaches 40 sometimes with intense humidity. I've had experiences when the hot air blows out for 10-15 minutes depending on how old your car is too

Not sure about older cars (didn't even get AC in those anyway), but all the cars I've been in in Japan didn't blow hot air for long, and even when it's hot air it's just as hot as the car anyway.

i'm gonna correct you on this one because it's not always Japanese vs Americans, it's Japanese (Asians) vs Westerners from the northern hemisphere. I've noticed there is a significant difference in daily and cultural life lessons between the two people. In the simple things of for example drinking water from the tap, switching on the AC, feeling hot or cold, or table manners and etiquette.

5 minutes is crazy. Every car Ive owned, the AC works after like 30 seconds after you turn it on. You get 30 seconds of hot air you blow out with the windows down and then cold.

@@jadedandbitter It should blow cold air max in a few seconds in a hot as oven car. Instantly in less hellish temperatures. Replenish the ac coolant as it leaks over time and greatly reduces it’s cooling efficiency.

I think the coast along the entire Pacific on the eastern side is cold. I lived in Cali for a few years and I bought a wetsuit bc even in the middle of summer it was so much colder than when I visited Maryland years ago.

Maybe Japanese cars have worse ACs in Japan? Japanese cars brands have different models overseas vs domestic. I know my 2006 focus had to be on for like 10 minutes before it could blow cool air. When I upgraded to a 2019 Mitsubisho Mirage, I was amazed at how I could turn the AC on almost immediately and only deal with maybe 10 seconds of hot hot air.

I live in the north of Brazil and we also turn the AC on immediately I can't even imagine how painful it would be if I had to wait before turning it on.

Ive driven 18 models of cars in Japan and all of them had climate controls that worked the way described in the original comment. I always do windows down, ac on max, close windows after a minute or two.

Incorrect, the engine drives the compressor, so it doesn't matter how hot the engine is. And the compressor has to run to cool it down so the sooner you turn the AC on the sooner it blows cool air

@@emmathomas8983 In both the UK and Japan, they have exactly the same technology for cooling vehicle interiors: compressors. There's literally nothing different about them.

Yeah, even if the evaporator coils aren't cold yet flushing in outside air is a hell of a lot cooler than the air that was baking in the cabin beforehand.

​@@ToastyMozart welp, the problem it's not flushing in with outside air. It gets air from engine bay. HOT ENGINE BAY which was under direct sunlight for a day plus has working engine in it which doesn't help at all. Yes, 5 minutes is a little exaggerated - but in general if you just started a car and it's hot - you will die first seconds you will turn AC and high fan on :) And the best way to do so is simply remote start 5 minutes before arriving to a car - it will be nice and cool by that time.

Idk what part of Japan that was but in Kyoto the trains were "lightly air conditioned" so it was still hot and swampy and now you're packed in there like sardines on top of that.

It's possible your car is new-ish? Every car my parents had when I was growing up was like this (and my dad's current car is super old and is like this), but in my step-mom's newer car the AC kicks in quickly.

@@V15lol Nonsense! It's not too late at all. I'm doing this on the end of my undergrad, you have plenty of time. It's abit of a hassle getting everything set up but I love it here, no regrets even during COVID!

The trick is to start the AC and open the windows until the AC cools down... I'm also impatient so would rather turn it on ASAP

isn't that how it works? how would the air compressor cool down without turning it on?

@@reifrei1170 it is, I live in Thailand where its 25-35C all year round, 1st thing you do is turn AC on. This video is some kind of Boomer joke I dunno. Same as in some culture ppl believe that hot bath helps against fever vs some are vehemently against it.

@@googolsucks9006 I suppose it's one of those car-related superstitions which don't apply any more. Especially in the country that pioneered electric everything - especially the AC compressor - in their hybrids. I lived in Italy for a few years and the Italian way is just to blast the AC on full with the windows down for a moment. I've found that at 40C+ it's remarkably effective.

That's not how AC works. It doesn't magically cool down if you don't turn it on.

Yeah, at a minimum it's at least bringing in outside hot air to replace the inside scorching air.
