I’m convinced some of these outdated techniques- tons of baking powder, color correctors, dripping loads of primers and liquid foundations onto your face- were just created by brands to make us use up products quicker!
a lot of these techniques such as baking and colour correcting have been used past and present by drag queens. they’re used by performers who aim to feminise their faces and perform under stage lighting, so it’s not suitable for regular everyday people. i truly can’t believe i used to wake up early to do my makeup before school, i made sure to bake my face everyday 😭 & i cant stand the dripping and mixing of products onto the face, clickbait at its finest.
Definitely looks like stage make up. Such a waste too, and unethical in some cases because they've been gifted these products so they waste them at no financial cost
No, they were used by people in the entertainment industry who had models and actors who need makeup to be on camera, movie sets, broad way stages, or on the red carpet.
@@lucianas661 I read comments about stage make up on every tutorial at the time about thick foundation and baking! No one wanted to listen and considered them "out of trend" 😂
I used to bake under my eyes/my cheeks for my show choir performances. The videos, which were taken from the back of the theater, look great! I don't look reflective from sweat and the light is diffused on my face. The selfies I took that night? Absolutely horrible. 😂😂
I tried the baking thing when I first started getting into makeup and I always felt like I was either doing it wrong or that there was just something ugly about me, until I found you. Everything you say happens when baking was everything that kept happening to me! So it really helped me to understand that there isn't anything wrong with me, it's just that baking is fucking stupid. ❤️
Plus when you see all the beauty Influensters baking they have the air brush filter mode on there camera, plus a few ring lights to make it look great, but in real life and real lighting it’s no good xx
I believe baking was created by drag queens who perform in heavy stage makeup under stage lights or in a nightclub. It's a way to ensure makeup lasts from a distance under less than ideal conditions, so they can dance the night away without makeup melting off. It was never meant for everyday looks.
I tried baking once and my reflection scared me, lol. I thought I was the only one who's skin looks horrible when baking until I found Robert and some other MUAs.
once I stopped over powdering my under eyes, and using less concealer, they've looked so much better and more fresh! Also found the right mascara that doesn't transfer easily so I don't need to use so much powder
Thank you so much Robert! 💖 I'm an "old fashioned Hippie-Flower", and I start with a little bit of Make Up/very less of Foundation, but the Eyes are important in the early 70ties! And starting for me and us (all Girls around me,too) was using Kajal, the original fatty one, coming from India! 😀😉 It smears like "devil"...but we love it! 😂😉 And it doesn't hurt our Eye-Area! Because it is/or made before to save our Eyes (and the Eyes of little Babies in India , too!) for Infections. And than it starts to pluck our Brows! But I'm sooo happy that I didn't follow this "Fashion" so much as a lot of Girls and Women did! I follow my own Style, slowly learning what fit's me the Best! And I think: this was my best Idea and Behavior ever, about my "Look" and real beeing as a woman. We can and should play sometimes with our "Look", this can be totally fine, but to find a Way for ourselves to look like the Best Way and the realistic Way is the Best Attitude ever. You are great😍🤗😉 - and your Brother James, too💕👍❣😍😉
You are the most relatable person on RU-vid, and I love you for it! You're just so honest and I love that you're explaining your opinions and not just going "this is sh*t". So glad you're back, and I'm glad the move went well
I hate baking and using excessive amounts of powder in general! Let me tell you a story: When I was a teenager, I was invited to my cousin's wedding. They had called a famous mua in my city and insisted that I should have worn makeup that day. She did my face and pressed tons of powder on it - I looked like a porcelain doll for 5 minutes, then my dry skin started to flake and show a lot of texture. When I said I was not satisfied, she insisted that I looked gorgeous. I was so annoyed. The result? I washed my face and went to the wedding wearing just tinted cream and mascara (which was my intention from the beginning!) Love your content and I'm happy to see you so excited to be back 😍
Great to see you back! People on social media have very strong opinions don’t they lol. I mean, if red didn’t work to block out hair drag queens wouldn’t use it on their beards would they? Something I see all the time on Drag Race xx
I'm pretty sure I tried "baking" not long before I started watching you..and soon realised baking isn't for me.and that I didn't need it & i should listen to uncle Robert and his make up genius. Thanks!👌
I do still pluck and carve my eyebrows (at least on the bottom part) because I feel like it gives me more space to work with makeup, particularly because my eyebrows are very close to my eyes, so I need that, also looks cute. ✨
Hey Robert 👋 hoping your super well! You know why people are more skilled now??? Cos we have you honey!!! Thanks for this upload babes... I totally agree with you, but I admit I still do one of them 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Take care sweetheart 😘 Lots of love Tia ❤
Hey Robert, so glad you're back. How did the move go? Hope it went all well. Loved the video, and can't wait to see more. Sending out love and hugs and kisses. 💜🖤💜🤗😘
ugh srsly my fav "RU-vidr" ever 💗💕 so amazing 😩 well both you and your brother of course!! forever grateful for you both bc you two have transformed & molded my entire skincare/makeup routine, every step of the way, from start to finish. literally every single time I've ever seen someone cmnt on TikTok expressing that they need help with makeup in general - Ive always replied recommending your channel!! and if they have a certain concern/issue they need help with, Ive recommended specific videos of yours that address their exact question/problem. and I never do that lmao like you + your brother are the only two people/channels I actually recommend to ppl, even irl! bc even though I probably could recite verbatim the founding principles & techniques of Robert Welsh ism (lmao)... it only feels right to send them straight to the source!! I also just feel like everyy&anyyoneee could benefit from seeing your content themselves, I want everyone to have the opportunity to watch it so they're able to have that transforming and educational experience that comes with watching you and your content!!💗
@@RobertWelsh omg of course! the makeup community on yt has turned to mostly entertainment but you've always kept strictly makeup as your core and i love it 🤍
Have you ever heard of Monat? They're like a skim care/hair wellness brand and they have stuff for dogs as well! I have a serum from them and thought I suggest it to you so you can check it out! I love your videos, they're such a breath of fresh air ❤️
i think a lot of people were really into drag race and watched the queens tutorials and took tips from them even though they do their make up for stage and we do it in day to day life- i think that especially for baking powder!! So many people took that to heart lmao but its defo fizzling out now (thank god cause its defo not good for your health either😅& if you're like me and have a candle lit when doing makeup then a fire hazard too 😅)
Oh, Robert.. I work at Target and open boxes allll daaaay and my cuticles are so grody... my hands are dry all the time and I get cuts that I don't even realize are there until I wash my hands and it stings lol! I feel ya
Brows really are changing all the time! I decided to just fill in my brows naturally to their shape. I look terrible with thick carved brows and fluffy brows (my brows will never stick straight up 🤣).
Best video so far. You are so deliciously real. I love your videos. You did your face an injustice with this mess but glad you did it. I know people who still co tour like that and I am always saying "you need to blend and choose a different shape and color" they never listen.
Hi Robert! I really love your reactions to make up artists. I just started doing RU-vid videos, I am not like those famous make up artists at all but I would love for you to react to one of my makeup videos since I have seen that you also look at random makeup tiktok trends, I just really like how you explain what are some common mistakes also how my makeup routine can be better ❤️🙏🏼 hope you read my comment 🥰
I’m not going to lie I did that to a client, just as Robert I don’t like the look of backing at all, but now I know how to bake ligthly , and not leave that horrible look
I feel like people saw a bunch of Drag queen baking and decided that they had to do it too. I mean they look amazing but that doesn't mean everyone should do it.
Robert apparently the term for ‘outdated’ is now ‘’Cheugy” which is usually used in regards to us Millennials 😭 I think going from this video that you and I agree on the techniques that we still use. We are Cheugy 😫 #sorrynotsorry
Have you seen all of Meredith Duxbury's tiktok videos? Maybe she's on RU-vid too. But I know she has quite a following on tiktok? I'm still confused if she genuinely uses all three thick layers of foundation or if she wipes it off and then continues the video..idk
Thank you for mentioning stage makeup- that is the ONLY context in which baking is acceptable. Drag makeup is fabulous in its correct context. But those techniques are not meant to be flattering in natural light and for every day wear. Baking makes everyone look so much older- I say, it's makeup, do what you want! But if your goal is to look your absolute best, powder very little and embrace your face!
Question: I find that my foundation and anything on my nose always ends up on my glasses as well as grease smudges on the top inside corner of the lenses from my eyebrows. I find “baking” tho I don’t use heaps helps to stop this. Any other suggestions?
the one problem i have with makeup trends (techniques included) is that everyone “has to” have the exact look according to some media, and then you just end up with wasted products you’ll never use in a few months when the trend changes. we’re all so different. some girls i know look amazing with those 2013 pomade brows while i don’t, but then i look better with foxy eyeliner than they do. it’s all about your style and facial features, so i wish we just let different trends coexist without claiming one particular thing is the best. but yeah some of these techniques are truly crazy
Thank you for saying this, I totally agree with you! There is so much pressure to follow a certain look, even if it doesn’t flatter you or make you happy. I hated when, in like 2016, everyone thought they had to be warm and tan, only using warm tones, even if they weren’t warm toned. If everyone participated only in trends they liked rather than because it’s a trend we’d get so much more diversity and everyone could find and keep their ride or die products. Also from a girl who still does 2013 pomade brows, thank you for acknowledging that it’s still okay to do them like this, don’t have enough hair for the soft and fluffy look.
I also have very sparse eyebrows, I use a pen, thr urban decay brow blade nyx is more affordable and more natural looking fluffy Brows if you ever wanted to try it and look fluffy. Sometimes I still do more structured Brows to depends on my makeup that day xx
I think that there is a difference between what is "office appropriate" and what is trendy. Maybe it is just all the women I know but for 99% of our working days we don't want to spend over an hour each morning on our makeup and eye looks like he did are only for maybe a Saturday night. Some of these trends looked awesome on social media and you see these people in real life and it was weird as hell. And then there are eye shapes and that what works for one does not work doe all, especially nono and hooded eyelids.
@@candace4339 yes I've hooded lids badly I'm 35 and have enough eyelids for 2 eyes 🤣 Rachel o cool shows eye looks for every eye shape and all are quick and easy, she us a makeup artist to and Robert has mentioned her a few times... I could spent 2 hours doing my makeup but on school mornings I wanna chuck on n go now x
For a hot second, it was stage makeup techniques EVERYWHERE. I so glad we've discovered that stage makeup is meant for the stage, and doesn't really translate well into the everyday, polished makeup look
one "outdated" technique that I love is using blush on the apples of the cheek. my face is round I think it looks so cute, but people on tik tok seen to hate it for some reason heheheh
This is straight-up what Jaclyn Hill does too, and she looks gorgeous. Not everyone has the same face, and different techniques that don’t work for the “average” face look absolutely stunning on other faces. People on TikTok can get fucked. I bet it looks gorgeous on you too!
I remember my daughter insisting that I bake under my eyes and I absolutely hated it! I told her it’s aging me beyond my years. It’s in my opinion the WORST make up trend!
That was the trend for me that made me calm down buying makeup and copying everything I see online. At the time of trying it I was probably about 26,and wondered why it just made me look crepey and old! I always thought it was my problem - but turns out it's just not a good technique for textured/dry under eyes!
Baking is literally the worst “technique” I’ve ever seen it doesn’t look good on anyone in real life, maybe with studio lighting on RU-vid or tiktok but it makes your skin so dry and textured I don’t get it
It didn’t work for me at all. At night time I thought it looked pretty good in a certain light but then in natural daylight it looks terrible! So dry and the powder sits in every crease and still looked white after brushing off
It's designed for people who are on stage so their make up doesn't melt. People can't see crusty under eye make up from the audience. It's definitely not for mature skin.
I totally agree, I feel like a lot of makeup trends for a while were more focused on looking ‘beat’ for cameras, or things that are ‘satisfying’ to look at on camera. Roberts is a nice blend between real life wearable and camera ready if that makes sense.
@@user-lw9ut2ms6m professional actually means being paid to do something. Could be on a set, travelling to someone's house, or in their own studio. Robert is a qualified MUA, and does have a lot of knowledge, I just think it's important to realise that just because someone is a professional, it doesn't necessarily mean they're correct 100% of the time. For example, there are doctors who are antivaxxers.
I think the thin brows are coming back very soon. Please, young people, don't tweeze TF out of them! I was 18 in 2000 when the thin brow was so popular. I absolutely regret it now. They never grew back in.
We are the same age with the EXACT same problem, to the point where I have removed the three brow hairs I had left and draw em on every day. So yeah listen to the lady up there ⬆️ it's good advice😉
I see older people now going around with nonexistent brows and thank my stars I was in my pre teens during 2000s and wasn't exposed to makeup/beauty world. I love my untweezed, unplucked full arched brows. Just a pencil does the trick
I’ve been in a depressive spiral for about four months (broken up with, moved out on my own, struggling to make rent, and got so bad that I had to get an emotional support animal) and in that time I have barely done my makeup at all. It felt so disheartening to start to see progress in my mental state just to go back a step because I failed at doing my makeup. Luckily I had videos of Robert to go along with and do makeup alongside, and it ended up making me be like “eh it’s ok I’m out of practice, I’ll get better.” But hearing Robert, the person who made me want to go into makeup artistry, say that he’s out of practice and feels like he doesn’t know what he’s doing is so relieving to me. I feel so much better knowing that it still even happens to someone like him, who has been practicing for so long and is so good at it.
@@SigourneyCleaver things are slowly looking up, but it’s definitely taking time and there are still bad days. Being able to experiment with makeup and accept the bad ones are a good start to getting back into the groove of life 😊
you're probably being way too hard on yourself. One thing I do know is that makeup is very therapeutic, and throwing yourself into something creative after a break up is a really good way to recover, so just keep going and don't think too much about the end result. Its all practise, and it will lift you out of unhappiness. Also, at the end of 2020 I broke up with someone who had been abusive to me for a year, I had to involve the police, and I was in a complete mess. About 4 months later by chance I started talking to someone on twitter, we went on a date the next day (6 feet apart on a park bench in the freezing cold as it was in the covid restrictions), and we've been together ever since. He's absolutely wonderful, and I've never been happier. Don't give up on yourself, there's always something or someone else around the corner. Learn the lessons from this last relationship and try to focus on what makes you happy, bit by bit you'll move on until one day you'll realise you're happy again x
For a few years there everyone was applying makeup like a drag queen. That isn't a dig at drag makeup, but the everyday person doesn't need that much makeup on their skin. Also, drag is meant to feminize the masculine aspects of a male face. If you already have a feminine face you don't need to do that.
Add to that is that as skin ages, you can only put so much makeup on before it becomes aging. You also need more definition and natural colors, and fewer extreme colors (not that I intend to give up green eyeshadow anytime soon).
Brows can really make the whole look of a person. That being said, I refuse to pluck my eyebrows. I usually sneeze and cry a lot whenever I attempt to remove a stray hair. It is a mess. 😅😂
I shave off quite a bit of the end of my brow with a regular razor, you do have to do it every day or every other day depending on how dark your brows are, but it takes me less than a minute to do both so I don't mine.
I still remember my mother (who is in her 50s) telling me that she’d discovered that the faded Instagram brows were done by basically drawing on a monobrow and covering it with concealer because she saw some kind of clickbait video saying so, I had to talk her down from trying it and she still didn’t believe me! There are people who take these things fully literally and can really mess themselves up in the process
@@jdblackbird7317 oh no, not that old at all! I don’t think she’s old by any means, she just hadn’t quite wrapped her head around the idea that these “tutorials” were just clickbait and not actually showing how things were done, the gradient brows in particular confused her bc the idea was so different to how she’d been doing hers for like 30 years
@@oishi5477 no, thankfully not! She also thankfully never tried it herself, she just assumed it was a genuine technique. I explained that wasn’t how it worked, and I did tell her to search around on RU-vid for actual tutorials that weren’t clickbait shorts to get some better info
The wheezing when you bake!! 😂😂 I remember baking when I first started watching beauty RU-vid and I felt SO cheated when it didn’t work on me and I just walked around looking crusty for a year or so 🤪
This might just be me because I'm not really in the beauty sphere anymore but I feel like hugely overdrawn lips are outdated now too? Like they were such a thing (and tbh I never liked it then either) but I feel like if people did it now as crazy as they used to it would date their look. Anyone else? Or am I just out of fashion lol?
@@courtneymckenzie9136 Haha this is a really good point! 😂 I'm not a fan of the overly filled lips either tbh but if it makes them feel beautiful then it's their lips :)
Overdrawn lips go hand in hand with that age bracket of ladies who are still pencilling in thin brows in shades 7 shades to dark for them. Along with the heavy black eyeliner. Arghhhh. If there is one thing my mother taught me was to embrace tones of brown rather than black everything, and she rarely wears make up beyond foundation.
I remember a client I had, I did her foundation and it was done, beautiful, and she's like, "I need more." and I'm like, no you don't..." so she slathered on 3 extra layers of thick foundation and was just caked on and making her acne stand out even more and I was like.... I fucking... just give me your eyes and we're good.
When I first started getting into the beauty community on RU-vid it was at the height of the "baking period" and my dried skin (as in Sahara Desert dry) dumb a** tried to do it ...let's just say it didn't go over too well 😂😂
As a middle-aged lady trying to keep up - and who is on video every day for work - I depend on you telling me what’s considered outdated! I’m not trying to look trendy, but I also don’t want it to be obvious I first started doing my makeup in the 80’s, either. ☺️
You're an absolute queen omg you're so sweet 🥺 I 100% recommend even just scrolling though pinterest under the makeup tag for inspo on new looks/styles/techniques! But remember, if you like doing it a certain way, do it that way!!
As a cosmetologist/esthetician/wedding makeup artist, this is the most satisfying video I’ve ever seen. When he mentioned painting on foundation and tapping in to “blend,” I yelled, “YES! Preach, brother!” and freaked out my cat. 😂
Robert "the way we did brows back in the olden times .... " Me "the nineties?" Husband "the EIGHTIES?" Robert "you know the instagram times ... " Way to make us feel old over here 🤣🤦♀️
This was fun! Never understood the baking. I try to avoid powder as much as possible. Don’t think it looks that great on very mature (old) skin. My brows are so over plucked (thank you 1960’s) that I have to do whatever I can to have a reasonable brow. This might be out of your wheelhouse, but could you give us with over plucked brows some help/ideas on how to achieve a more normal brow? Love watching your videos.
Maybelline has a pretty good product that is like a crayon with filaments so it's like its adding in hair. I used it when I had no brows because of chemo and it worked really well for me
I wore makeup on state occasions when I was younger, but back in the '80s and '90s, the current trends didn't really suit me, so I would slap something purple on my eyelids, go ham on mascara and black eyeliner, and wear far too much blush. It wasn't a good look, so I stopped until I was in my 50s. Circumstances forced me to reinvent myself, and one of the ways I distanced myself from the old me was to start wearing makeup, but I wasn't going back to the '80s. I started watching videos. Baking was everywhere, so I tried it. Baking 50 year old under eyes did not go well. In fact, I found that the extra-light, overly powdered concealer aged me more than I ever thought possible. I started matching my concealer to my skin, going light on it, and barely setting it, and lo and behold, now it's in style.
Baking is the most detestable technique for every day wear! There's a certain famous family that I blame for this monstrosity. I just hope that this will be the year that said family will STOP baking, so that we can end this vile trend once and for all! In my opinion...allegedly of course!😊
I’m Asian by ethnicity, & I’ve given up trying to do what’s trendy. I found a lot of trends are Euro/Caucasian-centric in terms of eye shape, colors, & contouring. What’s usually popular on TikTok or IG doesn’t always translate to people of color or, say, people like myself with a monolid. I’ve found that staying true to myself with a less-is-more approach, will never get old. Trends come & go but a classic approach is forever.
I remember when I started getting into makeup, it was for me to cover up my acne, especially as most of the youtubers back in 2014 era promoted full coverage as better. Add on the baking powder etc. Felt weird about it coz my face felt so dry at first but then my oils come out. I'm thankful that I learned through later years by getting into skincare how your base skincare is more important than the primer and that full coverage doesn't mean it's good. I actually prefer semi coverage, I like to use BB creams and tinted sunscreen as the "foundation" and just powder here and there.
does anyone else ever feel a little sad when he says "please consider subscribing" and you're just like "I can't Robert! I already am subscribed 😢 " lol
Happy Sunday and Happy (early) Valentine’s Day Robert! First of all, congratulations on the new house! Damn, I’ve missed you and had to re-watch old videos so I could get my fix. I’m glad you’re back 💓🖤💓🖤💓🖤💓🖤
You’ve honestly changed my life with how I approach makeup on my face. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t use to bake, and put on soooo much foundation, concealer, and powder. I didn’t even use blush! But since watching you I’ve switched up the game and I honestly love makeup so much more because my face isn’t a carbon copy of every influencer out there. Thankyouu so much! xx
Hahahaha I’m laughing out loud! You said “whenever someone asks me to bake under their eyes I say no you do it yourself” lmao 😂 I love you so much Robert 💓✨🦋
I still love carved brows, I don't like the current messy trend. I've never got on with baking as it just made my lines look a million times worse so I'm so glad you said that!
😂😂the baking is such a No for me too. I remember the first time I tried it I was horrified… like what the F is this?! I’m right there with you. Your reaction has me cracking up 😂😂. Love it.
I am SO bad at doing my brows, but I must say that since I've been watching you my makeup had gotten so much better looking and you inspire me to try new looks & be comfortable in my own skin! Thank you thank you thank you!!
The way Robert spazzes, then performs an exorcism on the under eye powder and it literally puffs off his face in whiffs of smoke at 12:57 Proof that Baking is diabolical! 😂 😈
