Hi Tim. Yes, it's a bit surprising that color affects people psychologically as much as it does. Because of that I actually pick Bible covers with great intention to suit the occasion. Typical black for example expresses authority and leadership, which is why clergy and police tend to wear black. But black is also dismal, intimidating, and strongly related to death and evil. I go with a black Bible for funerals because it is appropriately somber, reserved, yet lends the preacher an air of comforting leadership in a dark time. Red expresses power and authority and energy, which might be great for an vibrant energetic preacher giving a highly kinetic enthusiastic sermon. But red also conveys danger, violence, warning, intimidation, threatening ... probably not the color to carry into a situation involving traumatized people. Blue on the other hand is calm and peaceful, serene and contemplative, fluid and flexible, a soothing salve, but tends to also convey sadness or depression, melancholy, tiredness. Blue is a good color for a Bible when walking into a situation where it's very important to be a calm and soothing presence for the people to whom you are ministering. The neat thing about purple (and other "secondary" colors that are combinations of two primary colors) is that purple combines the strengths of both red and blue while avoiding the negatives of each. Purple is a color of royal leadership and authority yet it is also calm and gentle. Purple comforts and protects and exudes strength, while avoiding the aggression of red and the passivity of blue. That Jesus is dressed in purple in John 19:2 is an extremely intentional visual portrayal of Jesus in the moments leading to his crucifixion. For all these reasons, if I had only one choice for a Bible to carry in every situation, I would immediately choose purple all the time.

Really neat idea; I enjoyed reading this. What do you think brown bibles convey? My initial reaction is that brown has a rustic, worn, aged feel to it; it's natural, earthy, and "solid" like wood. I quite like deep brown leather bibles.

@@john.thomas21 Depending on the shade, brown is either a positive life-giving color calling to mind fertile soil and growth, but it can also mean barren or lifeless. Because green can have almost exactly the same connotations, it’s often a good idea to pair brown with green somehow so that they both serve to bolster the other’s life-affirming quality.

@@john.thomas21 interestingly, neither brown nor green convey any sense of power, authority, or leadership, and likewise none of the negative opposites of those qualities. Thus both brown and green are usually neutral but for some people who crave power they are weak colors. Of course, to a Christian, power is perfected in weakness.

Purple is one color I don’t have in a Bible. I tend to go for color…sage green, pink, deep blue, teal, rose gold….

I'm loving mine, and I will PROBABLY order a second one in green when they come out, mainly because I love the 89 text of the NRSV- I used an NRSV New Oxford Annotated Bible all throughout college, seminary, and my first four or five years of pastoral ministry as my only Bible for preaching, teaching, sermon prep, and devotional use. And with that version of the text being effectively out of print now, I want to grab as many great copies of it as I can!

Those are really nice incremental changes that Allan made to their NRSV. It’s a definite improvement. I’m waiting for my own purple with bated breath, especially after seeing this review! I had such a hard time choosing between ordering the purple or waiting for the green. 😂 I wouldn’t mind seeing you also feature the green on your channel!

I'd say the ghosting between the 2024, 2019, and 2012 editions is almost identical. The GSM appears to play no factor in that quality, unless the kinds of paper that were used happen to vary so much. Also, this text is NOT line matched. The layout was created prior to 2006, and line matching was not a thing until 2010 (Mark Bertrand will claim that Cambridge was the first to use line matching as we know it today in the 2011 KJV Clarion, but in fact the first published use of line matching was by HarperCollings in their 2010 NRSV GoAnywhere Thinline series).

Thanks for reviewing this! I love my purple, but I wish it didn’t have the ink smudges and other printing issues that seem to be somewhat common to this edition. It’s a beautiful Bible though, and premium editions of the NRSV are few and far between…..so not only am I keeping this one, I’ll likely get the green when it comes out if I can. The NRSV is what I think of as my “home” translation. It’s what my church uses and has used since before I was confirmed so that’s what I grew up with and I unconsciously compare all modern English translations to the NRSV. (Sometimes consciously, now that I’m into this whole rabbit hole)🤣

I'm normally a black or various-shades-of-brown Bible kind of guy. I took a major step out of my comfort zone and purchased a red cover and blue liner w/ blue under silver art guilding NAS95 Allen. I'm still waiting for it to arrive. I know I will love it. I just hope I have the moxie to take it out to church or Bible study where, I'm sure, it will draw the eyes of others, which is not what I enjoy doing.

Also bought the NRSV1 P SPC. I think it’s great. There are a few very minor printing flaws (ink smears) and typos (see Job 8:16 and Jonah 1:17). However, it’s made by men (or people if you prefer…this is an NRSV review after all 😂) and errors happen. All in all, I think it’s fantastic. The purple goes great with the speckled edges. If it was red under gold I would get the dark green, but purple is a great match for the speckled edges. God bless!

Tim, I have never bought an Allan bible. Decades ago I was a Cambridge guy. I realize from looking at videos here on YT, that they are a premium Bible constructor. What I don’t understand is why they don’t do their own text? That just seems weird to me. Could you explain it? Why would they not do their own, and instead borrow from other Makers?

If it was single column and had a 2 inch outer margin for notes I'd buy two and begin the painful process of note transfer. This is the closest I've ever seen them get to my needs.

Zondervan published several NRSV journaling Bibles that were single column with 2” margins. Oxford published a better one in 2009 but it’s long out of print and not always easy to find.
