@@cxpKSip you're thinking too far, it's only IIII and IV that are interchangeable, not the entirely of Roman numerals, and it's almost entirely situation specific for clocks as it's a solution to a specific problem in clock design (although it does occasionally pop up in other places).

It's not necessarily that IIII is informal, it's typically only used on clocks and watches to make the dial appear more symmetrical and balanced.

Just got home yesterday from a trip to England to see family. 7 hour flight there, 8 hour flight back. For the entirety of the flight there, the in-flight entertainment system was broken for me and my mom. Mine wouldn’t load any movie, tv show, game, or even the icons for the different things (all just displayed a loading symbol on a black screen), and trying to load the map to see the flight path and flight statistics would bring me to a perpetual loading screen that I couldn’t back out of unless I left it alone upwards of an hour. My mom’s would let her start a movie or tv show, but would then just leave it on a black screen at 5 minutes in (hers only started working properly about halfway through the flight). Our dad’s screen (sat between us) and everyone’s screens nearby were working fine. I ended up watching a guy nearby watch the entirety of Shrek with no captions for part of the time. The flight back was a little better at first - my mom’s was working fine, and mine was actually loading icons and bringing up the flight path map. Then, when I tried to watch a movie, it immediately started skipping around without me touching any controls, fast forwarding to 30 minutes in, then the credits, then back to 40 minutes in, then skipping around in smaller increments around 40-50 minutes in, then suddenly the post-credits scene played and the movie closed itself out. From then on, the screen would move slightly as if I was swiping back and forth on it, opening and closing the movie screen, and not letting me click any buttons. Finally managed to just switch it to the flight path map, and it kept moving the map around. Then when I tried to turn the screen off later, it managed to turn itself back on in less than 5 minutes. As someone who hates flying and would have really liked something to watch to distract myself… 0/10 in-flight entertainment system experience both ways.

This is ironically a good r/foundsatan post, but grandmas are typically done having children anyways unless your family is weird and your grandma is only 28.

That's really dumb. Surely the fact the number isn't at the bottom of the dial would indicate it wasn't a 6? Also, we can work out how the numbers are oriented and how they should be read...it's completely unnecessary.

IIII is not only used for clocks, Romans have used it commonly for variety of things, similarly XXXX for 40 and CCCC for 400. They also relatively frequently used IIX for 8.
