The "We've arrested Your Family Member" scam is quite common in Japan. Alongside the "It's Me" Scam, where they pretend to have lost money due to bad choices and need help.
1:35 my university had something like this go around, asking you to login at another site with your email and password. We sent it over to the IT department so they could see who was trying to scam people and issue a warning. It was a real email from the university administration. Please note, even if you think your school's administration is as stupid as mine, don't click the link, forward it to someone in IT. If it's fake, they'll want to look into it. If it's real, they'll really, REALLY want to look into it.
@@mysticaloreo9278 this wasn't a test spam mail to see who would fall for it, it was how the university administration **actually handled messages containing sensitive info**
I love getting emails from scammers then copying and pasting the messages including the links and sending it back to them. The only thing I edit is the name to change it from mine to theirs/whoever they’re posing as😆
@@moon-moth1 that’s also true, it’s an email where I get all kinds of things and when I’ve got time for it it’s some entertainment😆 plus I’ve noticed that they give up after a few hours
Whenever I receive a Steam scam on Discord I reply with "Let me guess: Someone is impersonating me on Steam, scamming others and you now 'accidentally' reported me to Steam Support for that. Now you want to revert this but the only way would be for me to click a shady link that legit isn't steam support at all?" They never reply to it... Tho granted, I have the feeling it's some automated tool that checks if you reply with "yes" to then respond with the usual scam phrases.
The last scam email i got was one saying that my “19 year old son was in hospital after a freak car accident and i needed to pay 19,000$ for it”… im 17 and i live in a country with universal healthcare lmao
I keep getting sms messages on my phone that my package couldn't be delivered and I now have to pay to pick it up even tho I didn't order anything lol Oh and also a delivery service would never ask for money so you can pick up the package because it couldn't be delivered, atleast not where I live.
Hey Robin, at 5:40 they are referring to how people who are scamming you often say kindly over and over again, I assume it’s because since the elderly see it as “respectful” and make them positively apply trustworthy traits to them, since “Someone would never scam when they are asking me to do something so peacefully and I confrontational.” I look at it as manipulative and a dead giveaway that they are trying to pull a fast one on me.
FYE got me with that. Asked me for my email to sign me up and give me 10% off that day. I used a credit card that day so I never really checked or noticed that I had been charged $12 each month for about 6 months. When I called to complain and get it cancelled, they said “you signed up for it willingly, so there’s no refund.” When I expressed no one told me it was a damn membership, they wouldn’t listen. Just cancelled it and hung up on me. Always tell them no.
If you used a credit card, call the card company and do chargebacks. This will hurt FYE if enough people do this, and can even get their contract with the credit card company revoked!
@hmnhntr I used to work at FYE, company policy was to hand someone a pamphlet with all the info about the card and telling the first month is free and they can cancel in 7 days. (We would circle the customer service number for people to do that at my store) But shady stores will pull bullshit tactics like that to boost their store numbers, my stores honesty had us with the lowest loyalty in the district and we were constantly being yelled at about it until we were eventually shut down 3 years ago. I'm so glad to be no longer working for FYE, i will never work for them again because of several reasons and that disgusting loyalty program and the magazine scam are just the tip of the iceberg of gripes I have with them
My mom almost got scammed but I saw the signs. The voice, trying to get her bank account information, and then she did the right thing and called the real company.
pro anti scamming tip: big companies basically NEVER start by sending a person to message you about an issue. typically if there is an issue they will simple shut down your access and then redirect you to a place you can ask for assistance (point being that they aren't bothered to give you personalized pre warnings, its either auto generated or you don't get a warning at all).
Going to put this as a separate post here. 19:15 - Here in Australia you can earn on average AU$31.72 per hour for data entry with some places reporting upto AU$44 per hour. So yes, you can be getting paid as much as $40 if here in Australia lol
Whenever a scammer bothers me I just send them some art from Yuko Tatsushima. The more cursed looking, the better. Her art makes me feel so uneasy, it's really intense but when you don't know about her it can come off as scary. The Mandela Catalogue is also a good one to share.
12:36 a romance scam is where some person claims to be some woman who starts flirting with you over dms on fb, insta, snap, etc, constantly asking for small or large sums of money to be transferred electronically, by paypal, or other etransfer sites, while the scammer claims to come meet up irl, but never does, while still requesting money for "bills" or some other nonexistent item. it's basically catfishing with money involved.
My grandfather fell for that scam. The chick claimed she was from South Africa and needed money to get out of the country. He ended up sending her about 300 dollars before he got caught.
When I was younger and my mom would get "cars extended warranty" calls, she held up the phone, and me and my brother SCREAMED at it as loud as possible lmao
I know a couple weeks ago someone was pretending to be my high school’s principal by using an email with an invisible space and nigh-identical to his. Most people would fall for it. The impersonator (I chose that word carefully) would schedule false events, send out emails littered with lies to scare the students(s) (and their parents, usually with the threat of suspension), and even caused 2 “senior skip days” via email AND had everyone preparing for a fire drill. They were never caught, but they suddenly decided to stop.
@@Zxanonblade I was trying to avoid this… but you leave me no choice… OH MY GOD ITS 3 IN THE MORNING AND IM IN MCDONALDS AND WE JUST FOUND OUT THAT WHEN U PULL UP IN MCDONALDS AT 3 AM YOU CAN BUY THE AMONG US HAPPY MEAL WITH A TOY IN IT WHICH IS EITHER THE IMPOSTOR OR THE CREWMATE AND IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT AMONG US IS YOU MUST BE MUST REALLY BE LIVING UNDER A ROCK ITS AN AWESOME GAME WITH IMPOSTORS AND CREWMATES AND BASICALLY THE IMPOSTOR TRIES TO SABOTAGE THE WHOLE GAME AND THE CREWMATES NEED TO STOP HIM BUT APPARENTLY WHEN YOU PURCHASE THE AMONG US HAPPY MEAL SOMETHING SCARY HAPPENS
Yes, you can report internet scams to the FBI. Which you should do, because being done via the internet automatically causes the scam to cross state/international boundaries, which makes it their jurisdiction. The system you use to file that report is called the IC3
Can confirm: the FYE cards are a crazy scam. Working there was fun but soul crushing. They encouraged you to do whatever it took to sign people up for the cards... And canceling the card what a GIGANTIC head ache that could take over 2 hours worth of phone calls. Plus as an employee that was the ONLY THING they graded your performance on. It was horrible.
Including the comments was quite helpful in this vid, along with Robin's commentary! I'm pretty sure this helped or will help someone avoid a scam. Personally, I've ran into the fake check one before but from a "job", however, I typically try to get enough info from them before reporting them to the company they're pretending to be and the FTC. Always report whatever you can to the FTC as well (Or your countries equivalent that handles matters on the Internet).
Easiest way to verify the rental ones is to look up the address of the rental on real estate sites like Zillow. I did this once, then emailed the link to the "rental" to the agent handling the sale of the house. They were able to handle the legal side of things and I didn't end up getting scammed.
that fye thing must apply to that store, because they do tell you or at least in my state. They also tell you how to get out of paying for it the first time around and you only pay for the subscription if you actually want the vip card. Yes, you need a credit card in order to get one
As an artist, the $400 one seems legit but make sure to ask for half of the money upfront and then the rest after (also if you are sending a pic of your sketch then edit a watermark over it) if the person makes a big deal about the payment/watermark method then take that as a queue to leave
5:11 Warning to any artist regarding this scam It starts as a normal art commission then they are going to try and do the ‘email check’ payment or some other shady way of paying. It’s super annoying especially if your doing commissions bc your low on cash
Damn... I've learned 2 things today, One I don't know anything about the scamming world And two feet pics sell for a LOTTT, imma go get a pedicure real quick
4:13 I was a victim to one of these scams. Someone made it look like I had made a big purchase but never sent the money, then directed me to someone who was impersonating a ValvE staff member. I lost my steam account for about 3-4 days but got it back really easily. Be careful. People are just heartless and will steal shit just to see you cry 😭. Needless to say I was scared out of my mind and that person got such a terrible rep in the servers they were in
They usually then use peoples stolen accounts to then DM their friends. I knew a message was a scam cause the person started with "Hi friend" which is now how that friend talks. It's funny to cause you think "how do you accidentally report someone on steam?" you have to literally go into their profile then click a drop down menu under their account level then click click report.
I like messing with scam callers, "our records show you've recently been in a motor accident" "yeah being blind really has some drawbacks" get them to hangup quick. One time I told them hold on as I needed a pen, put a metal saucepan lid over the phone & drummed it using spoons.
Because most scams are built emotionally I have a natural immunity to them, because I accidentally killed all my emotions except rage at around the age of 5
4:49 This is a common scam among insta artists, don't fall for it! It's one of those where they 'accidentally' overpay you, so you pay back a large sum, before the bank notifies something wrong with their check and you don't get anything but in fact handed the scammer money for free.
Had a phone call at like 7 am wake me up the other week restricted number picked up and the guy with an indian accent was like "Please give me your social security number. Hold on I'll call you back." and then called back from a somewhat local number and I didn't pickup. I was wondering is this some new tactic or was this the scammer's first day on the job and they skipped a bunch of the script.
My favorite scam is the people calling asking for money from the fire department or the local police. I just tell them "Impersonating an officer is illegal, I hope you know." and then I hang up and call dispatch with the info. I GUARANTEE none of those are legit.
I heard about that one about leaving the gift card on the self scans so the next person would pay for it without noticing on an article about it happening at walmart.

@@erenjeager4987 lmao i just send them hebrew/zalgo text/etc and some cryptic image from pinterest - one time i got one where this girl was typing super weird, it was english but she was using every single accent marked variation she could and her grammar was broken. i sent her number to my friend and he started sending her Jojo's bizarre adventure stuff and covering her messages with stickers LOL
I know my grandparents would never fall for a "bail your relative out of jail" scam because they'd just say "fuck him, he probably deserves to be in jail".
The steam scam i actually figured a way out of when my friend went through with it...i forget exactly how, but i submitted a report to steam customer service (where you report bugs with the platform i think) and just say that your account got hacked, and it actually worked for him
yep i also have gone through it. you can easily do this as long as you can send evidence that you made the purchases on the account, like say email receipt's. if your account was purely free to play however, good luck with that
3:52 - 4:43 That's my comment! I am SuperTechno2004. That is crazy! I was not expecting that sitting at my computer. I started hearing it, and got Deja Vu. I looked over, and it's me! I was totally not expecting to show up in a EmKay video. This is amazing! I love your channel. It is super entertaining!
on the "I accidentally reported you" one, even if you fall for it and get your steam account stolen, steam support is actually REALLY good, and you can get your account back in probably under 10 mins (I know this because my steam account got hacked once)
@@IgneousExtrusive So, basically, the scammers send out what looks like legitimate marketing emails, but the unsubscribe button links to a phishing site. So if you receive marketing from some place you haven't done any business with, be wary.
Not really a scam but a massive fail: I once ordered a vacuum from Walmart. The first package got delivered somewhere, so I reported it and they shipped a second. It was taking too long so I called the delivery company and they told me Walmart... hadn't put a delivery address on it. Just a city and state. So, when I called they put the address on it and sent it to me. That is why I don't order from Walmart anymore.
Since this is r/scams, I have a story from a few weeks ago that I feel like would fit here: Me, a friend, and my two younger brothers went out to a gas station for some snacks and a walk and it was getting cold and dark, so my friend called for an Uber to take us home. When the Uber driver pulled up, he requested 10$ to take all four of us home when my friend already paid for the Uber ride. Thankfully, my friend called out the driver's scam behavior that day and I learned to look out for scams like that one.
I JUST did this this week; My sister was answering a spam call, and decided to say “Yes” to everything. I decided to call them again, and said; “Hi, my name is Slim Shady. Would you kindly stand up?” I accidentally hung up mid-way through my first try. By far, the funniest part about it was the scammer answered *TWICE* after being pranked.
I mostly get fake wrestlers but I will also get romance scammers and other fun stuff. I report them and then mess with them until Instagram deletes them or they stop answering. I then post screenshots for other people to get a free laugh out of it as well.
I love messing with the scammers. Here in Canada, I get a call every couple of months saying that a package I ordered has been intercepted and is being held by border services because it contains illegal items. Love how this is a robo call! It then says to press 1 to talk to someone. So I do, and when they ask for my name I tell them that I'm Agent Davis of Canadian Border Services Agency. I swear I heard one guy choke on his drink as he scrambled to hang up on me!🤣
Partner worked for FYE - he says that "We were told to tell them "First month is free, then it's $11.99/mo after that"" and suggests that either it's that ONE store doing that or FYE has since changed things since he left in 2020 - but he apparently was REQUIRED to tell people that it DOES charge you after the first month and that it's not just 100% free and if they didn't change it's store specific - since a lot of stores like to do crap like that to increase numbers of sign ups and such to get bs rewards.
I work at a post office, and I have no idea how many people I prevented from being scammed. It's always the same scam, they sell something valuable, send it abroad, and as soon as the scammer has the tracking info, they retract the money or the receipt they send turns out to be fake. There's at least three cases a year when people come in, asking for the parcel, because they were scammed. The lucky ones can get it back or are fast enough for the postal services to stop it.
Love the trust in cash. Sure we have countermeasures to check for fake bills but yard sales and other lower-security places likely won't use those pens or silly scanners. Avoiding larger bills can help though
12:33 Your only option is to divorce him for his emotional affair and then you can Sue him for everything he spent out of your joint assets that you didn't approve of and you'll get that on top of the division of property.
literally. that was super confusing, "my ****HUSBAND**** fell for a romance scam" what...?? why is she still calling him a husband anymore its like were ignoring the elephant in the room lmao
What I find most sad is, that on my e-mail provider, quite a few scams manage to bypass the spam filter, even tho it should be blatantly obvious for even the simplest filter that they aren't real. Meanwhile mails from a newsletter I signed in is constantly put into the spam folder, even tho I mark it as "Not spam" several times and put the e-mail address in the whitelist....
A scammer got my 80 year old grandmother with dementia for almost 3 grand. They called her from what appeared on her caller ID as my cousins phone number, and used a voice distortion tool to ask her for bail money. She sent it without hesitation. I’m still fuming over that and it was several years ago. There’s a special place in hell for those people.
Almost got got by that discord steam scam. They contacted my insomniac ass at 2:30am and i got all the way to "verifying my account" before catching on and calling them out. It was one person running both accounts. Ended up reporting them to the mods from the server they came from and then blocking. Havent seen the scam before or since, but seriously, be careful out there. Always change your passwords afterwards.
Showing up after calling. It was a tactic where I live that they would call and claim you were in jail or the hospital and wait until the people left to go see you/pick you up, then rob the house
300£ / $ for a commission of pet (I’m literally not drawing anything remotely close to pets and my price range is 5-15€ 😂) just sending each new scammer screenshots of previous one with “I’m not paying your bank fee, don’t care about your child’s birthday and going through a divorce” just let me draw in peace 😂
4:13 oh shit I forgot about this scam, for those who don’t know, people will search for users with their steam account linked to their discord account and claim to accidentally report their account of illegal trading activity, I received one while playing dragon ball the breakers a few days after it’s launch with my brother (who is very close to getting a degree in computing) and I questioned him about it he said its probably about breakers, I blocked them and removed their dm, they asked me if this was my steam account (put a link to my account with image) I look back at it and realised what a nuke I avoided by being paranoid.
One time my brother came to my parents and I and he was SUPER pumped about this FREE brand new iphone that someone was giving away at a gas station like 40 minutes away from our house. It took us like an hour to convince him it was ABSOLUTELY a setup and likely extremely dangerous. He's 3 years senior to me and even I knew it wasn't safe. Poor guy 😭
4:08 I have a friend who fell for this one. If somebody sends you something about your Steam account and you don’t know them. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFO. SCREENCAP THE DMS, BLOCK THE PERSON AND SEND THE SCREENCAPS TO DISCORD WHEN YOU REPORT THE ACCOUNT.
3:19 I got something similar. They said they were gonna use one of my Instagram posts of myself taking a selfie during my 20th birthday, and I believed it but didn’t want my face out there
17:17 $125 for a used 20 gallon tank and supplies? Has the price really changed that much in the last 15 years? I got a used 55 gallon with hood, lights, heater, filters, a nice wooden stand, and the works in 2008 for $100 total from Craigslist. Lots of other folks in my area (maybe other areas too) got similar deals from various strangers in classified ads back then on large tank setups. It's a nice tank too, and I verified the size using a tape measure so I know that it's 55 gallons. I stopped keeping fish years ago and haven't bought a used aquarium in a long time, but even accounting for inflation that seems so different from 15 years ago. I dunno, maybe larger setups cost less secondhand because some people need the space fast and a 55 gallon takes up way more space than a 20 gallon. Maybe that's why I and other aquarists (both current and former) have found great deals on big tanks. Either that or we all had amazing luck. Maybe a setup like the one I got would cost a lot more these days.
125 isn't that much for a used tank. I got a new 10 gallon with supplies for 100. It's very hard to find a used tank for under 100 that isn't small or gross looking Smaller tanks are expensive because people want to make their money back. Big tanks are cheap cause people want space
I wanna start "scamming" people, but when they click the link, or theyre about to send me money, i tell them that this was infact train of sorts, and to look out for this kinda thing
I can not stress enough to not click on links on discord a common roblox one is that they send you their account (usually in trading games) but through a link which is a scam it logs your cookies and gives them the passwords to all of your accounts
4:14 I’ve gotten this so many times that I just play along and collect screenshots. When they’re done, I reveal I know what they’re doing and have fun. I then message a moderator and send them all the proof they need to remove the user. I’ve used Discord since 2020 and have gotten that 6+ times. No idea what the actual point is, but meh.
Worked for FYE. Yes, dumb little music/movie store in some malls. Can confirm...the packet the discount card comes in says that you have to cancel within 30 days or you'll start getting charged (the card that you use to pay that day). We were..."unofficially" pressured to not say that part in the pitch. The "mag" bit was the same...up to 3 free magazines for some period of time, auto-charged subscription to the card you paid with if you don't cancel.
I worked in retail and I hated it when older people came in wanting to buy $500 in gift cards (Target, apple, etc.) Saying it was for their grandchild's birthday. I always hoped their credit cards never went through. I asked so many times, " Did someone call you and say you need to pay them through these means or you will be in trouble with the IRS or social security? " Always no. I'm so glad I don't trust anyone enough to fall for this bs.
I don't understand the need of everyone to gift gift cards anyways. It's very inconvenient to get it like that because you are forced to use it in a certain store, in a certain time frame, maybe even for certain items (like, can only use it in the rl store and not in the internet shop which has way more items). Either I will have to buy more stuff to fully use the card, or it will have still some small money on it. I always hated it. Just give me the money directly, I can really use it (who can't?) and I definitely will think of you when I finally decide to buy something nice from it. And I can use it literally everywhere for everything, even if I "just" buy everyday stuff I will enjoy it pretty much. But I likely will do something special with it and tell you how nice it was. I don't think it's lame or too easy of you to "just" give money. It's not impersonal or so, as I specifically want it like that and can do way more individual stuff with it that way. And you could just wrap it up nicely if it bothers you and I will even like it more. Like, fold it in a flower shape, or something else, hide it in a puzzle box, change it into coins and put it in a bottle, whatever, use your imagination a bit. Just don't give me stupid gift cards which I have lying around for months with no use.
I dunno if it counts a scam per se, but I had someone attempt to get me to hand my Instagram account over by leading me through screenshots to my profile settings. I stopped around that point since I realized something real suspicious was going on. I never got to the end and I'd blocked them so I have no idea what their actual end result was going to be, but yeah,, just sharing my experience for anyone who might need it
that gift card self checkout scam wouldn't work at most places. Can't buy em at self checkout and, if you try, the light flashes for an employee to come over and authorized the sale. Whatever Ralph's is needs to do something about that.
To dodge a scammer all you gotta do is the following 1. Try reading between the lines and seeing if there is any hidden motives behind it 2. If you are selling something online do Cash Only and Pickup or Public Meeting place. 3. Never pay in bitcoin if it’s asked (personal experience with that happening, I wasn’t the one who payed in bitcoin but I tried warning my mom not too) 4. Scam the Scammers 5. If the people want you paying through PayPal or wtv just don’t honestly do in person, cash only kinda thing. 6. Screw around with the scammers since they are wasting your time I hope these tips help! I’m only 18 so I haven’t really been exposed to something like this yet, this is either common knowledge or things I’ve been told or witnessed. But stay safe on the internet everyone, it can be a scary place! ❤
whenever someone tries to be like "im an artist i wanna use your pics for inspiration..." or "i wanna be your sugar parents you text me i give you money..." im just like "oh cool youre an artist you can use my pics as inspiration for free no need to pay" or "I can talk for free we can just be friends" in both cases they never send me another message, sinces its clear im not falling for their scam
I had a phone call during class once. Thinking it was for an appointment, I step out of class. It was a scammer. They said that they knew I had been in an accident within the last few years and if that was true. I say, quite loud, "No but give me five minutes and I can find a window to jump out of, especially for them". They hung up. I reentered class and everyone heard what I said-
A few months ago I got a scam call at the gun range so I got some of the guys there to pretend we were in a war zone so we started shooting our guns and acting like we were in a shootout with isis we got the scammer good they brought it 100% they freaked the fuck out and we were laughing our ass off after it was over
I've had two scams via text saying I had to pay a toll fee. I don't use toll roads. I told one to go play in traffic. I immediately blocked the second. A few years ago, I got a call from a supposed bank, telling me about something. Thing is, it wasn't my bank and I asked "is this a scam?" He replied with something I couldn't make out and then said "bye" and hung up. I had another call a week or so ago telling me about some transaction I made that was $1000. The thing is, that money is being saved to fix my car. I have not made any purchases of anything that's $1000. The call, this time, was automated and not a person like the other scam. I had panicked, thinking someone stole the money I'm trying to save, and the call ended while I was in my bank app. All my money was still there.
The one scam where you said, "If you show up at someone's house wearing a mask, they will shoot you", actually took place in Japan, where almost no one owns a gun.
