I really wish Chris Covell had the time to complete his Supergrafx patch for R-Type. The reduced sprite flicker and higher resolution would help a lot with shoot 'em ups

Arcade version had a display of 384x256 and probably far more colours, while PcEngine was around 256x224, but graphics look pixel perfects (with slightly simplified palette range) so they added some extra scrollings. Still one of the best port, considering.

It's not the best conversion, but my favourite port is the Sega Master System version of the game. Of course, it's the one I had as a kid, so I'm fully aware that the nostalgia goggles play a huge part of why it's my favourite. It was still close enough to the arcade game in feel and enemy patterns, that I could practice on the SMS version to get high scores on the arcade game. It's a technical marvel that the SMS port was as close to the arcade as it was, even though it's a total flicker fest. The thing that ruins the Turbo version of the game for me, is the vertically scrolling playfield. I understand why it was done, as a lot of the sprites and tiles look almost pixel perfect compared to the arcade, and they had to compensate for the resolution difference, but I would have preferred that they re-draw the assets so that the entire vertical portion of the playfield could fit on the screen. It wouldn't have looked as good, but it would have played better, as R-Type was designed to be able to see the both the top and bottom portions of the playfield at all times.

The SMS version was great for the hardware, definitely a fantastic way to play the game at home before the 16-bit era. I actually got it AFTER I got the US Turbografx-16 version and still enjoyed it. Also, like I said in my commentary, I also thought the vertical scrolling hurts the gameplay a little since things you can't see off-screen can still shoot at you. I also wish they had just redrawn the graphics for the resolution they used. In the end it's still good and I wish the CD version didn't have in-game cutscenes or that mostly awful redbook audio track. All that makes it worse than thr US TG16 port that came out years earlier.

Here it is, found a comparison of the differences between the original US & JP HuCard versions of R-type. Apparently there's a patch for the US version to be able to adjusted to run like the original JP version. But like I say, R-type Complete ended up using the US code for some strange reason. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-20WmEbptYnY.htmlsi=1YMalNj07q6EEEzY

First off, great work on the gameplay. You’ve clearly been playing it forever and have it’s number despite it’s difficulty. And I couldn’t agree more on the awful music on CD. Not to mention they could’ve easily added fake parallax and improvements with the extra ram on the SuperCD and simply didn’t. What’s funny is the hucard original actually has even BETTER music than the arcade lol. The PCB hardware is a bit harsh sounding while the hucard chip tunes are extremely melodic and pleasing to the ears. I love the hucard music and that makes it my go to version to play. So yeah, aside from seeing the cut scenes there’s not much reason to play the cd version. You did a great job comparing them kudos 👍🏻
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming Год назад
Thanks! And yeah, I agree the music in the HuCard/Turbochip version is (mostly) better than the arcade original which is very harsh. PCE PSG music in general has aged kinda poorly IMO, but R-Type and some other games still sound really good on it. As for some fake parallax... stage 2 they could have easily used animated tiles. Stage 4 could have had a simple starfield. Animated tiles would have really worked well with the square backgrounds of stage 7, too. The CD port was definitely kind of a half-assed release for 1991. I've wanted to do a Gradius 3 comparison for a while but the arcade version of that game is such a nightmare difficulty-wise, lol. So I don't know if that one will ever happen.

For some reason, when Irem decided to port the entire game to cd, they used the US code rather than the Japanese code. For those that don't know apparently the Japanese version used a higher resolution and had something to do with vram, it all goes over my head. The word is that NEC in the early days had a mandate that a lower resolution be used at all times in games on the PC Engine. However when Hudson ported R-type, NEC apparently let the higher resolution slide in the Japanese versions, but then demanded the lower resolution mode when bringing it as one complete game to the US. A few years later, irem decided to bring it to Japan as one complete game with cinemas and rearrangements of the music, but according to various coders that have dug into the code, it's using the US code which uses the lower resolution and has more flicker. Why Irem did this is beyond me other than maybe a quick cash grab. Honestly by the point complete was made, they likely could have made even more improvements on the game because of understanding the hardware better, but apparently they didn't. Recently someone released a patch for complete so that it apparently uses the higher resolution mode, but I haven't tried it out myself yet. Only found out about it yesterday. Heres the patch for R-type Complete that adjust it so that it has the resolution of the original JP versions instead of the downgraded version of the US edition. www.romhacking.net/hacks/8349/

I was playing this yesterday on the MISTer (awesome device). I was on level 3 and died a lot. It does seem more doable than most shmups, if you can remember the patterns. IREM games had very high resolution in the arcades (384 x 256 which is even higher than CPS1). I imagine it was expensive hardware. I like the extra detail you get with this.

R-Type was a great shoot em up. The symbiotic design of the Bydo Empire's technology fused aliens, its intricate level design and snappy music made it a firm favourite. You have to laugh at the PCE CD level 1 music with the robotic "RRRR R-Type" as it starts, definitely belongs to that time of 90's CD arrangements. The Spectrum version was the first home port I had and considering the limitations of the hardware, it looked and played really well.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming Год назад
Yeah, that level 1 musical arrangement on the CD port is hilariously bad. It's pure insanity that something like that got approved. Only a few of the songs in the CD version are any good, IMO, most of them are embarrassingly bad.

Everything you need to know about Japanese fans of the PC Engine is contained in the fact they were willing to pay for the same game twice to get a nearly uncompromised port on early Hu-Card. Can you imagine Sega doing that with Ghouls N' Ghosts or Capcom with Final Fight? Anyways, my favorite port of R-type is the Spectrum version, just for the exciting behind the scenes drama where the developer was threatened with two different lawsuits....essentially, as a consequence of making the game too good. He wrote a book about it all, and it really explains everything you need to know about computer arcade ports. Second favorite is GBC, because it does exactly what you said the CD game should have. And because the Gameboy was my introduction to the series. It's like a lot of other firsts you never forget, even if they were nowhere near the best.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming Год назад
Yeah, it's kinda strange that this came out the way that it did. Again, not at all bad, just completely underwhelming for the time it was released with 3 year old problems (flicker) that they didn't even attempt to fix. As for Spectrum games, I fully admit as a United Statesian, I never "got" the Specturm and why it was popular, lol. My mother was from Scotland and would bring me back local game magazines when she took trips there like CVG and some format specific ones so I saw screenshots and always thought "why does this thing exist?" I was big on my C64 over here in the pre-NES years, though. Of course, I know now that the Spectrum was big over there because a) it was local b) the games were often cheap and c) the hardware was cheaper than the other things, so I totally get that's why so many people had one. Being an old platform I have zero nostalgia for, I haven't really been able to play and enjoy any games on it myself. It kind of reminds me, game-quality wise, of the Apple II over here. For the GBC, I respect what they were doing on the hardware, but not a big fan of that one. I do like the Amiga and Sega Master System versions, though.

@@InglebardGaming Yeah, 80's budget gaming isn't something you can really appreciate without a hungry Tiger's jaws being offered as your best alternative. For what it's worth, I can see where you're coming from, with other people's nostalgia. The C64's dull corpse palette, low resolution, and seasonal long loading times left a bad first impression on me. I simply lacked the Rosetta stone that could translate what it was offering. It wasn't until I saw it attempt Ghouls N' Ghosts in miniature that the sheer charm won me over. (Also, hearing Monty on the Run.) All that said, what did you think of the X6800 version of R-type? Reviews of the increased sadism seem mixed.

@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming Год назад
Yeah, I had hoped the CD version would be improved in some way or ways and that it would have a high quality version of the soundtrack. Well, it disappoints on all of those fronts, lol. It's still a good game, but for a CD port of a card game that came out three years earlier, they could have definitely fixed some stuff and made it a little more worth the purchase. Again, I think it would have made sense to include R-Type II on the disc, but maybe Irem didn't want to license that one out since Super R-Type on SNES is BASICALLY a port of that one (I know about the differences).

PC Engine Super CD is pretty spot on but the usual limitations of the pce like the lack of paralax scrolling (although they kinda tried on a few levels), flickering fest and lack of backgrounds which I don't get why they didn't implement them properly (maybe lack of time?), but overall I think this was a pretty good port. One thing I noticed the bosses sprites look on par and sometimes they look a bit bigger on the PCE. On thing for sure this port will never end up in the utterly trash series of videos jeje.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming Год назад
Hah, no, this is definitely not a candidate for complete trash! It's a good port. It's just that the earlier US Turbochip version that had the whole game on one card is better since the music isn't weird and there are no B-quality cutscenes interrupting the gameplay.

I hope you had fun bashing the work of artists. In the west we could only dream of conversions actually better than the original such as this one. In Japan, it was customary to add cartoon-like artwork between levels to add a sort of a "story mode"even to hardcore arcade titles such as this one, and they look great. You keep complaining about flickering, but you forgot we're talking about an 8-bit machine who rivalled even arcade systems. And dude, nothing wrong with the soundtrack! Hats off to whoever played though, flawless execution.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming Год назад
Ok, few things. All the gameplay you see in my videos is mine, I don't take footage from other sources because they often have issues - having filters on, recording at too low a resolution, recording at low frame rates or in the wrong aspect ratio to name a few. Everything else I said in thr video is, I feel, valid criticism. What, no one's allowed to say anything negative about something that people put effort into? Every critic of anything would have to immediately retire. And this series is a direct comparison between two versions of the same game. Not pointing out all the flicker would be negligent. I show the hardware specs and talk about the reason things are (or could be) the way they are throughout. As someone involved in making games, I fully expect criticism of any of my work and I think you'd have to be crazy not to. Edit: fixed a spelling mistake and edited a smidge for clarity.

I'm shocked at how poor the PC Engine CD is compared to the arcade version, i was honestly expecting it to be arcade perfect. I didn't know the console couldn't handle parallax scrolling, not even the PC Engine CD? That's lame. Also the anime cutscenes are pretty bad, Image Fight 2 did them much better.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 11 месяцев назад
The PC Engine only has one tilemap layer. Anytime you see parallax effects on the system, they're done through software using things like raster effects, sprites, or other tricks to simulate additional layers. In the end, R-Type is still pretty good on this system, but the earlier HuCard/Turbochip version is better.

@kabbusses 5 месяцев назад
@@user-go1cm6ei7q MAME emulation quality can vary since it attempts to emulate many unrelated machines at once. This is mostly relevant for more modern tech or for recently-recovered media, though. R-Type has been fully playable on MAME for decades by now. The emulation doesn't show any obvious errors, and we're not trying to analyze something like a Billy Mitchell Donkey Kong high score, so it honestly wouldn't really help anything at all and would just be spending exorbitant amounts of money on a one-off capture setup. And all for, what, a couple hardware-specific transition frames?
