2/2 Fitting a new timing chain to my R100GS PD. Starts off on the wrong foot about 1/2 an hour in I realise I've made a cock-up. I have replaced a few timing chains on late model Airheads and I made the same mistake once before, so you'd think I would have learned. Anyways it all came out right in the end.
So sit back and have a laugh at my expense.

Thank you so much for your videos on Airheads. I came to aircooled BMW's late in life but you have guided me through many areas . I did the cam chain on my 86 Paris Dakar yesterday with no issues and your tips were as always spot on . I even managed to put the tensioner on in the correct order and block those dangerous holes in the block . I am well aware how long these things take to do and thanks again.

Doh! Well seeing an expert like you make this mistake makes me feel better about forgetting to put the circlip on one of my pistons after recently rebuilding the top end of my R90/6. I noticed the new one siting in my parts dish as I was torqing the head!

A great Video. Just a little tip for next time. It would be helpful that the camera could shoot from the opposite side so it doesn't obscure the view. In any case, thank you 1000

Is it the same procedure for an R 65 ? Last question (sorry for my poor English) the left tentionner with two Bolt must be strictly in contact with the chaîne or slightly ? What about plastic wear in contact with the chain; is this durable ? But the second tentionner seems not to touch the chain.... I don’t understand how you mesure this because you where behind the camera...

Yes the procedure is pretty much the same for all models from 79 onwards. Pre 79 models are similar, but they have a double row chain and there are some other differences. The guide bar (left tensioner) should be fitted with 0.5mm preload according to the factory manual. I fit it so that the chain is touching it with out any load. And yes it is durable. The spring loaded tensioner should press onto the chain under spring pressure during normal running. I release the cable tie holding the tensioner off the chain about 38 min into the video.

Moto Phoenix my R 65 LS from 1982 and only 63’000 km has no sign of timing chaine now but I will keep preciously your tutorial! Once again many thanks to have done this. I know how hard it is to do that ! 🙂

Juste one more... after how many kilometers you have to do this job ?

That is hard to say,' perhaps every 100 000 km. It depends on how well the machine has been looked after and what kind of life it has had. Usually I will replace a timing chain when it sounds noisy (rattles), but if I am overhauling an engine I will replace it anyway.

Nicolas Brindesi it is a little tricky. Getting the valve timing right is very important. So long as you are methodical in your approach, you should be okay. Once the chain is fastened I suggest you turn the crankshaft through two full turns in the normal direction of rotation and then look to see that the alignment marks are lined up as they should. The rest is straight forward reassembly. All the best..........
