This video is the first in a series in which I show how I replaced the timing/cam chain on my R100GS PD.
In this video I show how I remove the chain.

Absolutely amazing. Just right for me. I have to change the timing chain on my BMW. It clatters and gets louder. There is no such video in German. Funny enough since it is a popular bike in Germany. Thank you very much for sharing you knowlege.

Thanks very much that was very helpful, I have just got myself my first Airhead and was thinking that I should do this and was wondering what are the tell tale signs of a worn cam chain and sprocket, Thanks Malcolm.

Glad you found the videos helpful. If you hear a rattle from inside the cam chain cover it is usually time to replace the cam chain. If you have the engine apart for some other reason and it has done a substantial milage, then it is a good idea to replace it anyway.

Yeah, quite a lot of money. I’m surprised that you didn’t tackle it yourself, a man of your experience with fixing bikes. Maybe you didn’t have the time.

If you couldn't get the master link off of the old chain with the timing marks lined up then how did you originally put it on?
@motophoenix5951
@motophoenix5951 5 лет назад
curtisound the position of the spring link changes every time the timing marks align. It will follow a pattern that will eventually be repeated. This means that once in every so many turns all the links end up sitting on the sprocket teeth they were originally mounted on. This is a common design feature that is made in order to promote an even wear pattern.

@@motophoenix5951 Thank you! That makes sense now.

I always keep a used chian link in my special tools drawer which I use to push the one on the chain out with after positioning it at a good accessible location. I do this before aligning the timing marks. The old chain link serves two purposes, it push the old link out toward the back and replaces it in order to hold the chain together allowing one to align the marks. Once the marks is in place it will be easy to remove to the front. One can do the same in reverse to assemble the new chain.

Thanks for the very instructional video, I have to do this job now this winter. Do you know if there's a part number for the kit you are using for the replacement? Or where did you get it? Please? My bike is a Europe 1983 R100 RS, and I think the engines on the R100 GS and the R100 RS are very much the same.

I buy my spares from Moto Bins, Motorworks and my local BMW agent Cannon Motorcycles. Moto Bins and Motorworks both do kits, which can easily found on their websites. All the best, Guy.

i heard you need to heat the cover around the crank so it can come off of the bearing. is that true? i didnt see or hear you say anything about that
@motophoenix5951
@motophoenix5951 3 года назад
Yes it does help to heat the timing cover around the crankshaft boss. It makes it easier to free the bearing therein.

I also have an R100GS PD but I have no idea how to take the tank off. Do any of your videos show that?
@motophoenix5951
@motophoenix5951 5 лет назад
It is very simple. Disconnect the fuel pipe at the taps. Remove the seat and you should see a thick wire strap connected to the back of the petrol tank and looped under the top frame tube. Reach under the tube and pull the strap backwards, then pull up the rear of the tank and then lift it off to the rear.
