Please do a retake on Paheli. It was one of the bravest and nicest films SRK had done and produced and only he could have pulled off such a character. And this movie can also be a guide to a man on how to respect women's choice and consent . SRK is a Super star but he is such an underrated actor and even more under rated Producer. The films he produced were always different amd risky,be it Phir bhi dil hai hindustani which was way ahead of its time, Asoka,Paheli ,Ra. one,Fan and Zero. I hope he never ever gets dissapointed by the box office and keeps making beautiful films. Eagerly waiting for his next ❤️

Was literally thinking about Paheli the other day. It is one of SRK's finest performances where he has showcased a good range. Sadly like his other strong performance-oriented films Paheli too has fallen by the wayside. Would be super interesting to bring it back to people's minds with an FC Retake.

I love that this movie is being talked about on a deeper level. I have always seen this movie through this psychological lens that Anushkas character is going through. I honestly think that if we just put ourselves in Taani's shoes we really see that she doesn't recognize her husband. Not because of this corny mustache/hair thing but truly doesn't recognize him because she hardly even looks at him. She doesn't wake up next to him gazing his face and KNOWING what her husband looks but rather goes about her day not noticing him. She is obviously going through trauma and being married to this stranger who btw she doesn't make eye contact with him for the first half of movie that much makes it sooo believable that she doesn't recognize him as Raj. Great discussion. As for movie DOSTANA please or Sawariya.
@lindarowe787
@lindarowe787 2 года назад
These are close to my thoughts! I like the way you expressed the point. Taani is married to a man she basically doesn't know and doesn't look at. They sleep on different levels of the house. Moreover, as Raj, Suri doesn't simply alter his hair and clothing, but his voice, his word choices, the way he carries himself, etc. This happened to be the first SRK film I ever watched and so, like the Taani character, I had no preconceived notions when I was introduced to Suri. I had to remind myself that Suri and Raj were the same actor. Now that I've seen virtually ALL of SRK's films, Suri and Raj look more alike to me. I imagine that most of the film's audience brought their extreme familiarity with SRK to the theater with them. RNBDJ might not be perfect ,but it remains one of my favorite films of all time!

These re-take sessions are living proof that movie viewing is such a subjective experience and beauty indeed lies in the eyes of the beholder (in the case, the reviewer/critic). What you disliked and did not buy into a few years earlier, suddenly feels heartfelt and sweet when viewed several years later. Which is why I think critiquing a movie right after it’s release is so unfair for filmmakers as the subjective view of the reviewer which can be influenced by the mood, the situation, the life stage etc of the reviewer ends up impacting how many people end up going to the theatre to watch a movie. We should make our own decisions based on the trailer and not based on the subjective opinions of a few critics.

didn't like? Dude it wasn't a hit, not even a super hit. It was a blockbuster. Budget 22 crores, raked in 187 crores in 2008. Nowadays, you only get a blockbuster once in 3 years or so. Sure many people had issues with it, but overall it was one of the biggest hits of not just a year, but the decade.

My first observation from this film was that Raj and Suri from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi are really a metaphor for Shah Rukh Khan’s commercial ventures compared with his more artistic ones, basically pointing out how while Raj represents the strictly commercial ventures that Shah Rukh Khan has done, it’s ultimately the more meaningful films like Chak De India and Swades, represented by Suri that get remembered, similar to how Taani eventually picks Suri over Raj. However, I think the relationship between Raj and Suri is deeper than that. As Rahul mentioned, right at the middle point of the film before the interval, there is one of my favourite acting performances I’ve seen on film where Raj has a monologue with Suri about how he is slowly taking Taani away from him. Really, Raj and Suri are two sides of the same coin. It doesn’t matter whether Taaani loves Raj or Suri because in the end, they’re the same person. It’s a strange love triangle that really exists just to contrast the two characters Shah Rukh Khan plays. Both love Taani exactly the same but while Raj can make fairy tale-like grand gestures to show his love, Suri can’t even place a flower on the table. In the beginning of the film, Taani tells Suri that even though she’s his wife, she won’t be able to love him because all the doors to love in her life are closed. Suri confides to Bobby that Taani "wants to change herself." But Suri has come to love Taani just as she is. Instead, Suri changes himself so Taani doesn't have to. Raj serves as the key to the door to love in Taani’s life and while Taani doesn’t love Raj, he is the person that eventually opens the door to her heart to find love. Taani tells Raj once that what a girl really wants is someone that loves her limitlessly and unrequitedly and while Suri does those things, it takes Raj to make her realise this. The film was marketed as ‘every ordinary couple has an extraordinary love story’ and while I highly doubt ordinary couples create complex alter egos to win the love of their loved ones, there are thousands of Suri’s across the country in seemingly ordinary marriages that love their spouse just as much as any Raj or Rahul from films. In a way, the story of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is about the relationship between a viewer and a film. The premise of the character of Raj is based on how Suri only really saw Taani enjoying herself watching films and this was the only time that he could spend with her without feeling awkward about it. While they ate dinner, they sat far apart from each other on opposite sides of the table but for the three hours that they sat in the theatre, they sat together. Whether it’s an action movie or a family drama, it was sitting next to each other in a dark theatre that the real relationship between Suri and Taani developed. When Taani comes to his workplace to apologise for scolding him, he doesn’t dramatically declare his love for her, he just asks her if she wants to go watch the new movie in theatres. When Taani makes the impulsive decision of deciding to leave Suri for Raj, she actually walks out of the theatre leaving Suri alone inside. The cinema hall is the motif of Suri’s and Taani’s love. Even the reason Raj is a face level parody of cliche hindi film heroes is because it is these heroes that Suri sees Taani enjoys watching on screen. In the life of an ordinary Indian housewife, it’s three hours of escapism that represent the real joy of life. It’s no coincidence that Raj is named after Aditya Chopra’s debut film’s lead, Raj Malhotra of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. In a way, this film is him taking responsibility for introducing this character to film, the character that can be seen as the primary inspiration for so many other characters since. The story of Rab Ne too, in a way, is an apology for setting unrealistic standards for love, especially when love isn’t just fighting ten people off to protect the girl you like. By putting the one dimensional Raj around real characters like Taani in the real city of Amritsar, his “romance” is visible to be nothing more than unsuccessful flirting and borderline harassment. Then, as the film progresses, Raj emotionally matures too until the end when he becomes both literally and figuratively Suri. While at first it may seem unrealistic at first why Taani chose Suri suddenly at the golden temple, ultimately isn't that how love works? It just clicks sometimes when you least expect it but at the exact right time. I can see why people might think what Suri did was in some way manipulative and at a level compelling his wife to chest on him but he didn't really want that, he just wanted to see her happy and realised that if she lived with his boring self, she would lose this happiness. He never intended to run away with her as Raj, this was just the only way he knew to form a connection with her. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is obviously my favourite movie and I'm so happy you did this video and I have so much more to talk about it but my fingers hurt and I doubt anyone's reading. Cheers!

@@rahultiwari-dx8qo thanks you but I disagree. Aditya Chopra may be more commerical than Kasyap or Sircar or Bharadwaj but you can't deny he's a talented director, which I guess is in his blood. You don't end up making your debut one of the greatest love stories of all time by mistake and every film he's done since has in some way carried that legacy forward, even my least favorite, Mohabattein. Befikre I originally didn't like but upon rewatching and putting aside my hatred for Vaani Kapoor, actually came to appreciate. It's Aditya Chopra at his directorally best even if the story isn't half as good as his better works and the cinematography and camera movement more than makes up for it.

This movie also feature the best self reflecting scene in any cinema that I have seen. Mostly when a self reflecting scene happens, it's basically main character talking infront of a mirror or talking to another character about themselves in 3rd person. But in this movie, when Suri (or in this scene Raj) is drunk, he began a conversation with the mannequin which has Suri's office outfit and moustache on. That is heartbreaking to witness that he is criticising Suri(mannequin) for his looks and manners and that Tanni is not happy with Suri, even said that Raj will steal the girl in the end, later realising if that happens he loses Tanni ji anyway then, as Tanni ji doesn't love him; she loves an personified image of him.

The scene where Taani tells 'Raj' she changes her mind and will not run away with him, Shahrukhs expressions are so pure and true to his character. The moment she leaves and he can express how he really feels, you can feel relief and a burden lifted. This made me so emotional as he cant quite believe she wants to stay 😭

Please do a retake on Agent Vinod! I think it is a gem of a movie that went underappreciated. I really think it is one of the best works of Sriram Raghavan and also one of the best espionage movies from India. There are so many aspects to it which can be considered unusual but that makes it even more beautiful. I had read a comment on a video by Akash Srivastava discussing about the movie which I completely resonated with. I'm copy pasting some of what he had written to convince you guys: First and foremost, you have to understand Sriram Raghavan, and his body of work, to fully figure out the theme he's going for. He's known for themes where he references 60's Bollywood movies (Vijay Anand and others), the bomb under the table technique by Hitchcock (where the audience know the secret but the characters don't), and biblical justice. This entire film is filled with numerous references to 60's Hindi movies, including the title itself. Second, this is the best we can think of a James Bond equivalent in Indian terms. Bond movies are supposed to be cheesy and spectacle/set piece based. Agent Vinod still has a really good plot, except maybe the final few bits. Third, it employs another 80's/90's technique which was mostly seen in Rajeev Rai's movies (Tridev/Vishwatma/Mohra/Gupt), which is a large assembly of villains. Characters of Adil Hussain, Prem Chopra, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Shahbaz Khan, Lalit Parimoo, and finally Dhritiman Chaterji are all unique and formidable villains. It's very referential and in some ways also pays tribute to the pulp action movie/novels of the '80s. Finally, it also pays tribute to Raghavan's own history. He used to write for TV earlier, specifically for CID. In the end, it also tried to subvert the traditional action villain genre a little. There is a small line by Gulshan Grover, who plays this big shot Pakistani terrorist/smuggler who when gets the answer of what is the consignment as 'the usual, RDX' or something, retorts "Bore nahi hote tum log?". To me, that's just smart. Hope you watch it and review it. Really looking forward for both your takes on it!

I was quite fascinated by how Shah Rukh played Raj. He may be playing a romantic leading man no matter a zillionth time, he has such vision and range as an actor that he can still do it with a difference and in a way that the character stays with you. I thoroughly enjoyed Raj ... much more than Suri ji actually. 😃 Next movie - Dil Se or My Name is Khan. It's high time Anupama converts as far as these two masterpieces are concerned.

I was so underwhelmed when I watched it when it came out and while I still don't love the movie(the chemistry between Srk and Kat leaves me cold), I have come to appreciate it's attempts at being an operatic love story spanning many years, which I think the film is kind of successful at.

How I see why taani doesn’t recognize suri as raj becoz she never looked at him the way you look at someone you love or u know. For her suri was like that baggage she has to carry her whole life so it doesn’t. Matter how u carry that baggage whether u put it on ur head. Or just keep kicking it to keep moving Forward together with it

Fun Fact: This movie was supposed to star Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala. I’m so curious to see how that would’ve worked out.

If the movie was as deep as the conversation, carefully taking out the problem parts, we all would have seen it in the right manner.

Thank you guys for the in-depth discussion... I keep saying to my fellow Rom com friends Bollywood or Hollywood... there aren’t decent love stories being made any more ... For me this was the last and I truly feel mr Srk will B able to do justice to an older love story 1 day 🤞🏾🤞🏾 No pressure 😂

Dhoom 2. I loved the movie and have watched it like 50 times. But now it's a bit cringe and also why would abishek pardon Hritik at the end. Now it seems very illogical. Love to hear you guys thought on it. P.s. I'm not a hater. But like Rahul said lots of movies we loved earlier does not held up in today's time.

I don't think Suri was trying to be all those Bollywood actors, he was trying to be Bobby all this time. He created the new persona keeping Bobby in his mind because he thought he was cool.

I highly agree with Rahul on every note about the film. while growing up it was my favorite film and its still is one of my favorites but people pointing out loopholes really made me love the film even more. Either its Raj intro scene or the last scene in temple, it perfectly fits the fictional world of RNBJ. btw Thanks for the video.

Why wouldn't you believe a wife would be there and serve tea to his friends? I would. My husband does so for my friends and family too. We are sick of "modern" stories where they don't believe in love, its soooooo cheesy. (Ironic I know) but trying to be cool and modern is not cool. We normal people still believe in family assistance in getting married and living with love and respect. So sick of free sex etc stories. Normal average people are more like Suri and like these stories of true love. Why do you think we still watch ddlj and Kuch kuch hota hai??? ??? This from a 40 year old born and raised in the UK. I've shown and my kids love srk and these older films. We still have arranged marriages here but not forced marriages. So i was introduced to various rishtas and chose my husband. Please recommend more decent/genuine love stories. Or stories about life after marriage.
