Hey guys, some of our rabbits got sick with Coccidiosis, so here is what we are doing to take care of them and prevent further infection of our other animals. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching, and God bless.

You can also feed oak leaves and twigs in small amounts as a preventative. We've dealt with cocci in our Rabbitry before. We ended up culling all the rabbits, deep cleaning everything with ammonia (ammonia is the only thing that will kill cocci on contaminated cages etc) we now treat all rabbits that come into our Rabbitry with corid to be sure we don't have to go through this again. I've actually bought rabbits from people that had severe cases of cocci, that's how it all started for us, so it's always best to quarantine for 30 days

I used to keep a baby pool $12 at Walmart. Anytime I needed to sanitize large items I filled the pool with water and added bleach. Toss the item in and every ten minutes turn it over to get all sides then just add a little soap to the brush and remove any stubborn debris. I think it would make cleaning the cages much easier for you.

I had to deal with coccidia earlier this year with a baby goat. She seems to be through it, but time will tell if she has any long-lasting effects. (Coccidiosis can scar the intestinal tract). Coccidia is always present in the environment, with young animals being more susceptible to it than older animals because of their immature immune systems. There are many types of coccidia, each targeting a specific species. So, rabbit coccidia will not infect your chickens, chicken coccidia will not infect your goats, etc. etc. Just about any animal can get it. My vet prescribed a sulfa-based drug to give my doeling, along with a probiotic. I've been told a wet, rainy Spring/summer is more likely to bring on coccidia "blooms" than a dry or normal summer (and we've certainly had more than our fair share of rain this year). Good luck with your rabbits. . . It can be so frustrating when a disease rears it's ugly head and you are stuck playing catch up to get ahead of it.

I was a rabbit leader in 4-H for many years. Coccidiosis is often seen in young rabbits. Probably one or more rabbits are carriers and the stress of a hot summer caused the outbreak. You are doing everything right, John. Best of luck!

I had some kind of problem about 8 months ago with my ole cat Ginger. She had also drooling going on and lesions in her mouth. Well after a vet bill, pain meds, kitty mouthwash and antibiotics. I think it had to do with food and water bowls for my cat herd. Got rid of the plastic and changed everything to glass straight sided bowls, also making sure the bowls are washed and rinsed everyday. Cat boxes also get cleaned everday, once a week add baking soda to litter, every couple months totally clean litter boxes with hot water and bleach because of toxicplasmosis. It is tough to be a cat herder and a rabbit wrangler and you depend on yours for food.

Hey Jnull, I am raising rabbits for meat too and I am a member of Backyard Meat Rabbits on Facebook. It is a great group. I have learned that Coccidiosis is a parasite and if you did an autopsy on the dead rabbit it would have white spots on the liver if the sickness was coccidi. Also, willow, any type, is a natural preventative for coccidi. love all your bids. Love your attitude. :)

We've dealt with coccidia with rescue animals many, many times -- so much so that I now recognize the smell. I guess that's a good thing because as soon as I get the first whiff I'm treating the entire rescue. Good video John. This is important knowledge for anyone that raises animals of any kind.

+VIDEOMYSTERY people get s=dif as well, and you know we who have been in the medical field always say there is an ugly odor to it however the experts, I guess microbiologist or someone claim there isn't a sure way. I do know even the test for human c-dif isn't accurate. You can test neg and be pos. so I'm sure its the same. Def nothing to screw with, the animal just as people dehyrate very quickly.

Just a thought while watching this, is it possible to get a plastic kiddie pool specific for this job only (cleaning cages) and every couple of months submerge one half , then the other in the bleach water and scrub em down. It would help with getting all the nooks and crannies and killing all the germs. Just thinking out loud, thanks for sharing! :)

Wow J. I'm sorry to hear this. You are doing a great job taking care of it. Ya know I'm having a problem with my birds, they were honking like ducks (they are chickens). I went right away to tractor supply company and bought oxytetracycline to put in the water. They were on that for 14 days. The honking stopped, but they still sounded nasily. I took them to a chicken vet. She put them on Tylan power (added to their water) for 14 days also, and Ivermectin, one dose per bird then and again in 2weeks, which we just completed last week. I haven't lost any birds and they are still eating, drinking and running around but they still sound slightly nasily. Next week I'm taking 6 birds to my chicken vet so she can swab them and send it off to the Michigan Poultry Exchange so they can tell us what it is they have. I thought it was something I did wrong, but I've been looking into things on the internet and then speaking with my chicken vet, it's not anything I'm doing wrong. I felt like a bad chicken mom :-( I hope everything turns out good for you J. Please keep us informed and take care-Debbie

There’s a great product that we use for our dog area as well as our rabbits. It’s peroxide based and will kill coccidia (and even parvo in a dog kennel!) it’s expensive but one gallon concentrate makes dozens of gallons of solution. It’s called Rescue. I recommend it for your animal areas so they aren’t exposed to bleach or ammonia. Those things are rough on their sinuses. Good luck!

thank you for caring for the rabbits and not giving up, but do you thin can you improve the conditions of these poor rabbits, that type of cages it can harm the rabbits feet, you can see how they walk that must hurt them you can put even something under to give them more support. They need space to stand up and walk, even some grass and sunlight. I do not know the purpose of reeding them but still they are animals and have needs. hope you can understand my point.

Just a thought i'm not a tree huger but doesn't the cage hurt their feet? I would assume that the pads of their feet go thru the wire and cause discomfort. Maybe, if you cut another piece of wire that would overlap and fall between the other wire it would make them more comfortable and the poop would still fall thru. I don't know how much discomfort it causes to them but i know if my feet were like that it wouldn't feel that great. you seem like a fella who really cares for your animals.
@reklawj9

do you know where this came from? Did you add a new animal recently, add a new pasture area or change feed sources?
@jnull0
@jnull0 10 лет назад
I am not sure where it came from, we have not added any animals or changed feed. I think some animals have a small amount of this in their system and can be carriers without anyone knowing about it until symptoms start to show. I think when this litter was born the heat and humidity of summer just led to an outbreak of this. Just one of those things that happens ya know. Hope this helps.J
@videomystery1264
@videomystery1264 9 лет назад
jnull0 You are correct. Coccidia is also a bane to those of us who do animal rescue, puppies and kittens are very succeptible to it. Across most species except birds, it's almost always limited to young animals, under six months old, unless the animal already has a compromised immune system, because animals over a year old generally have developed resistance to this parasite. I applaud your hard work and effort in preventing and treating it in your animals.
@Whytrytoimpress

Please don't think Im stupid for asking this...but is this something similar to parvo? The reason that I ask, some of the symptoms are similar to parvo? Wish you good luck with all your animals...deb
@jnull0
@jnull0 10 лет назад
No such thing as a stupid question Deb, you don't know what you don't know. I thought it could be parvo, but none of the animals were vomiting, nor did they show signs of high fevers (shivering), so this led me to believe that this was Coccidiosis instead of Parvo. Like I said I am not a vet, but noticing all the symptoms, and lack of other symptoms helps me try to figure out what is wrong. Hope this helps.J

Hi John I hope you respond I know how busy you are. I bought 4 -10 day old chicks yesterday from a local farmer , I added them to my week old chicks whom I bought from southern states. Well the chicks I bought yesterday I noticed when a couple of them went to the bathroom I noticed some red seedy looking things in it and a little. Blood, I looked it up and saw that this is the symptoms of Cocci. I ordered Corid and I will get it tomorrow. My question is I saw they also need to be treated with Vitamin B after treatment, did you do that as well? Also you said you treated 5 days on 5 days off after being off for 5 days did you retreat again? Sorry for such a huge question thank you so much for the video..

sorry to hear this brother. Can Humans get this brother? if they can should you not be wearing gloves to protect yourself from it, I know your working with bleach water and your hands are in it and you will wash your hands thoroughly but wouldn't it be best to wear them as a precaution ?

No, coccidia is species specific, so rabbit coccidia cannot be transmitted to humans.

Michigansnowpony If it is species specific doesn't that mean the rabbit can't transfer it to another livestock animal? The treatment could be the same and preventative is good, especially if this parasite lives in the soil (I think that's what I have read).

wtf the cage such shame... I have 100 rabbits on 1000 square meters. That how it should be and the males is free, but they stay because of the rabbits inside
