Like you, I did some independent study of genetics (some years ago when I was breeding horses). It’s both a fun and fascinating subject, especially when mutations occur and shuffle the deck. The neat thing with rabbits, is that with such a short gestation period, you get to see the results of your breeding program so much sooner-almost instant gratification when compared to horses (11 months). I found both your content and presentation excellent... and very glad someone already helped you out with the correct pronunciation of “agouti”... “allele” is the one I had a little trouble with at first, but you nailed that one 👍

thanks for the basics - genetics can be tricky, but people make it seem confusing - it really is not. Just an FYI - agouti is pronounced 'a goo tee.' In rabbits, it is considered the "wild-type' coloring. In cats, it is aligned with tabby.

Thank you for that goo tee rhymes with booty. Thanks for putting up with my mispronunciation. I promise to work on that in the future.

@willdwyer6782
@willdwyer6782 3 года назад
Animals with the agouti gene will display two or more different bands of color on almost every strand of hair on their body. Rabbits with the agouti gene often have a lighter shade of hair on their belly that does not display the agouti trait. This trait gets its name from a rodent native to Central and South America. Cats with the agouti trait are called tabbies. Some dog breeds also have this trait.

Genetics is so confusing. That you for helping me understand this better. I have two American Blue rabbits. I was told were pure breed and was given papers. The doe had her first litter of 7 two days ago. One of which is all white. What would cause this? I'm assuming one or both rabbits were not really pure breed and had American Whites in the bloodline.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter Год назад
This is the albino gene which is triggered from the C locus. When two rabbits breed that both possess a recessive c locus gene. This will cause all color to be hidden. Once this albino rabbit breeds with another rabbit the offspring will possess color unless the rabbit you chose to breed also possesses a recessive(hidden) albino gene.

I have a black doe who's mom was black and her dad was white but I don't really know if she would be a heterozygous or a homozygous. From the two litters she has had most of the babies have been black a few white and some have had small white patches with spots of the agotui coloring.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 года назад
It sounds like the two alleles are lining up to express black. Through test breeding you can find out what other alleles are in the mix. I'd research what the color is your getting and find what allele's are need to achieve that color.

Hi Bobby, I need your help once again. One of our does gave birth last night. Though she had a ton of nesting material, she didn't build a nest, neither pulled any hair. I didn't expect her to be pregnant but still checked twice a day her cage. Since many months it goes like this, I breed her and nothing happens... Unfortunately all the kits (8!) died since it was freezing outside last night. She had the kits in her wooden box but they were all over the place. I have put much effort into breeding rabbits and try to make their life as nice as possible... You can imagine I'm devastated. My question is, when is it safe for her to be rebred and do you have any idea why she behaved like that? Food cannot be the issue, they get what you advise. They have plenty of room in the cage and an extra 6 square meters to run if they want to. Greetings. Michaela from Greece

Experience from another breeder was that this indicates an inherited trait for being a bad mother, so cull. This breeder didn't at first (only like 3 generations later) and the does all lost the whole first litter, major part of the second and only started to have a decent ish survival rate at litter 3 or 4. The does kept for breeding from these litters had the same rate of loss and for the same reason.

There's very few cross-breeds that do well for pet sales, and the two most popular breeds of pet rabbit in America wouldn't be considered worth the time for meat. If you've got random/unknown farm type mixed rabbits, I wouldn't breed them or let them breed unless you like the meat and pelts plenty. Pelt buyers are also few and far between now, and picky, so unless you've got two pairs of Silver Foxes or are extremely cost efficient tanning those New Zealand pelts, there's probably not any profit in it. But a great skill to have for emergencies, or if you decide to go from meat to pets or do anything rabbit related. Knowledge is pretty fun on it's own.

As a side question, how do you get your rabbits to be more "friendly"? Does it all come down to handling? Or can it be personality? We have been raising rabbits for a little less than a year, solely for meat, but we love them and play with them and they have a good life.. but they are so skittish. One of our breeding does is very aggressive to the bucks and humans, but a great mom, so I wonder if that's something that is being breed into the babies? Does it work like that? I'm about ready to retire her because she's just so mean.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 года назад
I had a doe like that. Not friendly even less friendly when she had a litter in the cage. Here's a video that shows how to handle her and it works. This method isn't for house pets. Only for farmers and rabbit Breeders. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z87T4Ebm2oY.html&t I wouldn't cull her. I'd just try to handle her accordingly. Be sure to take her a treat when your inspecting the litter it makes things easier. If she lifts easily and produces well for you I'd try to keep her if possible.

They were from two reputable breeders so I’m just taking their word on it. I’ve read the standard of perfection so I know they don’t have any obvious disqualifications but it’s hard to tell body type on an angora when you are a beginner. Besides taking them to a show to be judged how do I know if I have the quality to breed them?

There will always be some rabbits that inherit different traits some better than other. It's important to rebreed those rabbits that present the favorable traits your looking for so you can improve your herd. Be sure to really pack on the food when the litter is growing. from 3 weeks old to about 6 weeks old I'm packing on the pellet. I remove mama at 6 weeks so she doesn't over eat the food I'm feeding to the kits.

Would you not need to factor in the grandsire and granddam in your first breeding for line breeding? Since their genetics would be half of the sire and dams genetics. I'm simply curious.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 года назад
Grandsire is 12.5% diversity With any line breeding you will need to prepare yourself to cull less favorable rabbits due to both traits good and bad being Accentuated. When line breeding close relatives this Will bring out those traits faster so you can Eliminate them and breed those traits that are favorable. When breeding grandsire to granddaughter you may not even see these negative traits there’s several different ways to line breed it just depends on what your goals are. Better looking rabbits, More favorable genes or just meat production.

We haven't had any chestnut does in our litters. I'd recommend trying to find another rabbit elsewhere if you want one immediately. I apologize for not providing you with one sooner. Our rabbits do take a while to get due to our Reservation list. That's why we don't take any money down. In many cases folks are so excited to start their production they end up getting their rabbits elsewhere before their rabbits are ready. So I really appreciate the fact that you were waiting patiently. We do have other rabbits if your interested. I just can't guarantee chestnut does in the near future.

Yes You can breed for meat or favorable traits But when line breeding there will be good rabbits as well as bad rabbits so prepare to cull rabbits the possess any unfavorable traits. Breed the best and cull the rest

So I have a litter from 2 blue new zealand rabbits. Both parents had red patches and they had 2 kits that were basically ombre and they had tan kits too. There's one ombre kit, tan on top fading to blue, that has a white spot. What are your thoughts on that? Have you ever seen that before?

Sounds pretty cool looking. Our blue had a little white Mohawk when she was younger but sounds like you have some recessive genes showing. Do you belong to a rabbit Facebook group -id snap a pic and post - thousands of people can offer their opinions and advice. It’s fun let me know what you find out
