All of my hutches have the hardware cloth floors which I didnt know are not reccomend until recently but I have never had any of my own rabbits have feet problems. I have seen it with other people's though so I watch them closely.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 года назад
I hear you that’s a common mistake and not the end of the world. Hardware cloth is just a higher gauge (thin)around 19 Versus a 1/2”x1” 16Ga cage floor which is ideal. You most likely are keeping your rabbits weight in check which is terrific -providing a foot pad to get off the wire when needed is a great cage accessory. I’d only change things if you start having trouble.

@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 года назад
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oHsa__cpsKY.html I couldn’t say when we’d have a rabbit with an eye infection- We haven’t had an eye infection in about three years. That said, I can explain to you how to take care of it, Wash hands or use sterile gloves- Hold a warm washcloth up to the eye for 3-4 minutes this will soften the eye crust Carefully wipe out all the crud and white infection with a washcloth or a Q-tip- once the eye is clean, smear the eye with Terramycin ointment On the eyelid and a little bit in the eyelid. Softly and carefully massage the eyelid to further apply the ointment around the eyeball and eye socket Repeat this process for 5 to 7 days this will kill the infection It’s very important not to skip a few days and then come back and reapply this will give the infection time to build strength and come back with a vengeance you want to completely eradicate the infection with daily applications Hope this helps.

My husband doesn't want to do the totes but I am thinking about doing three cages with ramps and totes in a hill behind them on the edge of the property. I just can't stand frozen babies and late September is the last of our litters until I can get them to breed in early spring.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 года назад
I understand it’s really depressing. That’s why we started the totes. Tunneling into a hill is actually how some European rabbitries beat the heat and was the motivation behind the tote system. I think that’s a good idea. Good luck with that and send me a pic on Facebook when it’s complete I’d love to see it.

I'm wasn't sure if it was going to work but a week ago I put one neighboring doe in with another doe and watched them closely in hopes they could help keep each other warm. It worked out so far and I plan to split them up again in about a few weeks. Do you think i should wait to breed them until after i split them up or just before kindling?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 года назад
It’s your call if you don’t notice any fur in the cage and they seem to be getting a long you can breed them and return them to the same cage -I’d separate on palpating day -that way they can get comfortable and ready to kindle in a quiet private place for the next two weeks.

do you HAVE to trim the nails? What do wild rabbits do to keep their nails in check?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 года назад
It’s good to check the nails from time to time so they’re not getting ripped out or damaged wild rabbits will grind down their nails naturally digging and crawling through their Warrens and tunnels. My rabbits do a pretty good job At that but still need to be clipped now and then.

We lived in the mountains of Colorado and had great rabbits, Silver Martens and Satins. We are now in Oklahoma, I hear from group members of all kinds of issues. I don’t know if it’s the difference in climate or ignorance of how to care for rabbits with minimal issues. I’m thinking of having a rabbitry again. Do you know, is it a lot harder to have healthy rabbits here?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 2 года назад
I have some family living In Oklahoma but they don’t keep livestock. One challenge would be the heat. But if folks in Texas can do it so can you. I’d consider going with some heat tolerant rabbits like Tamuk or Florida whites to name a couple. Best of luck starting up Your Rabbitry again.

We’ve been fortunate and haven’t had any myxomatosis or disease break outs since we started our Rabbitry. Does the UK have access to the myxomatosis vaccine? Of course there’s no guarantee but studies have shown that it helps. It’s one of those viruses that can be spread by bugs so really no rabbits safe unless you farm them indoors which for so many people isn’t an option. Even then insects can and will make their way into a barn. I’m sorry to hear about that. Did your Rabbitry take a big hit?
