As we stepped beyond the breach of the vegetated walled entrance, I had only one thought “I need to meet the creator of this brilliant child’s fantasy.”
Originally conceived as a holiday retreat for his children, Bullsiri Suwannachin or Lee (to those less equipped for Thai language), under encouragement, advertised his spectacular Treehouse Resort in front of his home nearby to Central Plaza, Chang Mai. Starting out with three treehouses the demand escalated as word got around about the unique overnight stay in the jungle. Fast forward to the time of this recording and 11 Robinson Crusoe style cubby-holes are clinging to existence from the roots to the tree-top canopy.
What a destination this is. If you've ever wondered what the domestic life of an Ewok would be like, this is your chance to satisfy the itch. Living space in the treehouses is more comfortable than you would imagine, though it helps to be short on tall genes.
The jungle can be quite loud at night with cicada's and frog's having a raucous love-in. Ear plugs are a worthwhile accessory for the bath bag because if the frog's love dance doesn't keep you up then the roosters and temple bell's at dawn most certainly will.
Shout-out to Mr Lee's daughter Pinn who was an incredible host during our stay, acting as tour guide to the local area and keeping the dinner table well stocked with a delicious spread of banquet food and icy cold beers as the support act. We had young kids in tow for the trip and they loved the outdoor experience, cooking marshmallows by the fire at night and swimming in the natural river holes by day. A short 1.25-hour drive from Chang Mai put this destination on the bucket list, just book ahead especially at the peak of tourist season.
