Uma Das Gupta is a scholar, historian, and biographer whose research has focused on the institutions founded by Tagore at Santiniketan and Sriniketan. She has led the Tagore Museum and Archives at Visva-Bharati, served as director of the United States Educational Foundation in India for the Eastern Region, and is currently governor of West Bengal's Nominee to Visva-Bharati's Court. Her works include Oxford India Tagore: Selected Writings on Education and Nationalism; Rabindranath Tagore: My Life in My Words; Santiniketan and Sriniketan: A Historical Introduction; Rabindranath Tagore: A Biography; and A Difficult Friendship: Letters of Edward Thompson and Rabindranath Tagore 1913-1940. Two books are forthcoming: An Illustrated Life of Rabindranath Tagore (Oxford University Press) and Essays in History and Culture: Rabindranath Tagore as Visionary (Penguin). Das Gupta has taught at Jadavpur and Visva-Bharati universities and has held fellowships at Oxford and Columbia.
