Not a cheap solution - This was £40 ($53) back in 1986, the equivalent of £100 ($134) today for a single PIR. Nowadays you can buy a good wired PIR for around £10 ($13).
For 40 years I've been working with PIRs. I have quite a collection of old ones from the early 80s.
This is the RACAL GUARDALL IR1012 and IR1025

Great detectors, thanks for the memories of my early days working on alarm systems, how technology has changed over the decades ! I've still got a brand new RACAL MAP6 unit all boxed up, very useful for expanding a system with an extra 6 detector indicators. The Apollo PIR's were very prone to false alarms though, not liked by many alarm engineers !

One comment on Grade 3 detectors: They CAN be masked, but they have to be masked internally to not trigger the mask detection feature. Usually, there is a sensor that detects if anything (even tape) is placed on the lens, and will fire the mask detection feature. However, there is provisions for masking the detector inside the lens, without tripping the mask detection (which would trip the tamper detection feature anyways if you would try to do it without authorization) How masking is done is mentioned in the manual. Masking certain areas is very rare nowadays, masking is more done with pre-made mask pieces (plastic pieces inserted into slots) to reduce the field of view. These plastic pieces are supplied in the box of detector, OR they are on the detector from factory and broken off with pliers to widen the detection field. Some detectors have this masking feature for pet immunity, it masks the lower portion of the detection field either with a moveable lens like yours, but then you see a black strip on the lower portion of lens, putting lens in upper portion sets detector in "pet mode", it will prevent detection of objects close to floor. Or a mask piece that is put on the lower part of detector, blocking off the lower view. So masking is done, its just rare and mostly used to give the detector a narrower detection field. Some mask pieces even have mirrors on them, making the detector even more sensitive in the narrow field when masked, so it can detect movement in the far end of a long corridor.

Yep, all very good information. I remember masking Racal Apollo PIRs for the 'pet alley' feature. They had to be mounted half way down the wall and the lens adjusted to look horizontal and the downward part masked off. This was late 80s, early 90s, long before pet tollerant detectors were on the market, and the Apollo was considered a tiny PIR back then!! And you mention masking internally, this is exactly what I've done in our training room on our training rig. Detector mirrors (Honeywell DT8016AF5) taped off inside to prevent the detector looking right, so that we can demo the system by standing on one side of the room. The antimask looks straight ahead at the front, after the taped off lens.

@@mrmattandmrchay Currently im installing my own Vanderbilt SPC 4320 in my home, and tinkering with a access control system so it automatically arms and disarms the system based on card reader usage (by using the access controller's VALID CARD relay in combination with the KEYARM ZONE INPUT on the panel). Soon I will have got it right.

06:54 The one on the far right was called a "Gemini" it had an ultrasonic detector in the top (Two round circles were the transducers, but they were covered by a foam strip.) The concept was that both the PIR and ultrasonic had to activate at the same time before an alarm was generated. The problem was, both the PIR and Ultrasonic can see warm air, so they were not that good. You could also set the walk test LED for one of 3 options. 1) PIR detects movement 2) Ultrasonic detects movement (The LED would flicker) 3) Alarm condition. Looking forward to the rest of this "series"

It’s been a while since I’ve seen one of your videos. Nice to see something from ya once again. I’ve been curious how these things work. I don’t know what brand it is but we have a PIR in my living room. The security system isn’t active anymore but the PIR still is and it still communicates with the old alarm panel.
