There’s actually a pair of raccoon dogs that like to roam around my house here in japan . When I first moved here I saw them usually at night and thought for sure that they were foxes, until I captured a daytime video of them in my yard and a friend told me they were Tanuki ( Japanese for raccoon dog) .

I was in South Korea in the US Army. When we would go out in the field to train for a few weeks or months we would run communication cables and other kinds of wires through the grass connecting various equipment. We had to raise the wires off the ground with polls or sticks because raccoon dogs would nibble on the cables at night, causing our connections to drop. My Chief started to set up traps to catch them in the act and sure enough, he caught a few. First time we saw raccoon dogs in person. We just let them go outside our area of operation and they stopped coming back. They were awfully cute though. Just wish they would stop biting our cables. They really loved to chew them up.

They’re so precious and cute and intelligent if I were to come across a baby orphaned one or an injured one I’d do everything not only heal but keep that animal so that way that poor animal will NEVER have to worry about finding food, shelter and be safe and protected until they pass away from natural causes. I just don’t want them to ever be hurt or killed ever.

Well, if you're around raccoons a lot and you aren't just taking a quick glance, it's pretty easy to tell they aren't raccoons. These guys have paws, raccoons have hands. Raccoons also have smaller heads with eyes that are spaced much shorter away from each other than raccoon dogs and the tails of raccoons bush out in a sorta tube shape in all directions from the base where these guys have more flat fur. The snouts of raccoons are also more narrow. These are things that are almost impossible to notice at a glance, though.

I uh... I'm gonna need a bit more proof on that whole "walking on water" thing. I think you may be confused as they're excellent swimmers, but they cannot in fact defy the laws of reality and walk on water because their paws are special. The only creatures that can "walk on water" are those light enough to not break the surface tension; so usually very small insects. Like... Idk I'm not a scientist so, maybe I'm wrong, but that just doesn't sound right. 😅

@@blahblah6497 yes I found what you mean. The Basilisk lizard or "The Jesus Christ Lizard." I actually found a short little "top 5 animals that can walk on water." Three of them are insects, the last the Basilisk and the 1st is a really interesting Gecko that apparently has some kind of natural repulsion to water which is very fascinating. The basilisk further more is able to "walk" on water because of a few reasons as well. First is that it's reality light and it's weight just barely breaks the surface tension, second is their feet are very large and spread out, giving them a very large surface area for each step, and lastly they must be moving very quickly or else they'll fall into the water; they sorta "springboard" off of the surface tension with each step. All further research I've done has me pretty sure they goofed in the video. I'm not sure what they meant tho or how the mistake was made? I know the Raccoon Dog has some mythology to it in Japan so perhaps that's what it was? He said walk on water *and ice.* Which probably means not walking like you think, but rather that their paws don't get wet or lose traction on slippery surfaces. For example, river rocks and the like.

Raccoon dogs are invasive in eastern Europe, i actually own a raccoon dog pelt because of that. They are hunted because they are awful for native animal populations in Europe, and are a vector for diseases us and native animals may not be immunized from. They are beautiful animals and i love them a lot, just in their native range.
