Seth Basnaw older 2 strokes are still fast but the 4 strokes weren't good until around 2010

I'm the same age and height as you and I have a 2012 crf250 and it's perfect size for me so I would definitely suggest a bike like that.

Actually, for a modern four stroke 2006 is outdated. There has been so much rnd on these things that the technology on these older 4t's is outdated. As far as 2 strokes go, slightly different story.

2006 is a while back now. To give some insight in terms of how much time has passed, in terms of bike technology as well as on a life scale... I got this exact bike...an 06 CRF250R for Christmas at the end of 2005. I was in the 9th grade, 14 years old and had been riding a while, wanting to start racing that summer of 06. I'm now 22 years old and due to injuries over the years/life changes, have just about nothing to do with MX (I rode twice off road and once on a track this year and have wanted to sell that bike for a long time) other than watching the Supercross races on TV and keeping track of the points when I find the time. These were the first to have twin exhausts but came before Honda Progressive Steering, and way before EFI and what not. As Jay said, as if talking about something from the stone age, "This bike still has a carburetor". There's probably lots I'm missing but I'm not totally in touch with the scene anymore. It's not like it can't rip around a track, but it's missing a lot of things that are now common place.

All of my friends that I ride with have 2007 or older motorcycles, so I'm accustomed to those bikes being "new" considering most of the motocross families that I know don't find it a worthwhile investment to purchase anything older than 2010. Not to mention, everything 21st century sounds new when you ride a '99 CR125R. Considering that the four stroke engine is far more complex than its 2 stroke counterpart, I can see how there are more changes to 4 stroke engine technology, and how they are more drastic as well. Why I started this was because it's Racer X, who I would assume would be more inclined to call a 2006 CRF250R old, as opposed to a local weekend warrior, who might have a different opinion.

***** Just depends how "into it you are" man. If you're bombing around the mountains/off road of some sort and hit a jump here and there or track it occasionally, sure an old 2 stroke will be fine (and sound awesome lol Brap-BRAAAAAAPPP). Hell...if that's what still made me happy, I'd probably just have an early 2000's 250 or something. But competing in MX, even at the lower levels, you see guys who get a brand new bike every year, or guys who like to beef it up go every other year but are constantly upgrading suspension and engine. On the other hand there was a couple guys at the tracks who would buy 1-2 year old bikes used, and spend the rest of the money they saved on a few upgrades, some gear, and practice/race costs. But not really much older than that, if they were competitive or serious. Cars and bodybuilding have taken over for my outdoor/life hobbies, but I know if I got back into it, hitting the track for practice every chance I got, and racing the local series, I'd be getting a brand new CRF450R.

I definitely agree with both sides here. Yes a 2006 technology is a little out dated if you compare it to a 2014 model. But also I can guarantee that the majority of the riders are not riding 2014 models. Personally I ride a 2007 crf250r and yes, some riders may think its old, but to me and a lot of other riders would see it as being fairly new, considering i had to pay a fair amount for it and it was as much as i could afford being as young as i am.
