I would like to see the struggle clips. Many of the videos show the before and then the done piece when removing bolts. But I'd like to see exactly what trick you used to remove the bolts etc. Otherwise, EXCELLENT video.
BEST VIDEO ON MAZDA Install!!!! Very specific and detailed... not like others with just little party boys screaming with load unnecessary music!! BRAVO SIR!!
What's up Randy been following for a while. Enjoy the content for 2nd gen speed3. Just a heads up your gonna have to cut/modify the front shock towers to adjust camber settings as you'll find out. Your gonna need a 3-1/8 bi-metal hole saw and just use the factory tower braces outline. I'm on the fence also about going coil-overs again since I live in NYC currently the roads here are horrid. I have BC racing on my other car in Florida and love those. Looking forward to watching the second coli-over video.
That is a good heads-up! It is coming in the second video I do (probably won't be until sometime in spring, the weather here got super nasty cold and ice everywhere), I am definitely going to cover that. Road condition is a great point, and something need to keep in mind if they get coilovers. No matter what they might buy, if the roads are garbage, they are going to have a rough time. When I record that second vid, I will definitely give you a shout-out for the hole saw tip! 👍
Definitely need to try these coilovers mine are all rusted just like u said with the steel! Car is from New Jersey so lots of the bolts and stuff are rusty, time to start replacing all the lil things!
Highly recommend getting the sleeve socks for coilovers that see inclement weather. Fluid Film or just a coating of PB Blaster will do wonders on keeping those threads from rusting up. These still look like new, just took the car out over the holiday weekend!
Yes that is the USS Defiant! You have a keen eye! Kudos on the coilovers! It is finally warming up here, I have already started clearing out space in my garage so I can get back it!
I just got these. Was surprised that they came directly from Taiwan though. Granted they are very nice build quality and ride great on my car. Also cannot find any instructions for adjustment with the package or one their website...
How long has this company been in business, fully adjustable, rebuildable, 3 year warranty, with custom spring rates sounds amazing... But why have I never heard of them before?
I got mine yesterday, love the 3 year warranty. However very surprised that they were sent directly from Taiwan... Kind of bursted my bubble thinking I was getting something made in USA. Granted all others like BC racing, etc are also made in Taiwan.
Really? When I made this vid (2018) mine were built in the US. They were the 172s (they no longer have make them, it looks like what became the Novak line) and they had different build options: you had a choice of spring rates (they would be dampened according to the spring rate you chose), different shock oils, they even had an inverted option. I wonder if the operation changed as it became more expensive to offer those options at that price point? I might have to do a follow up video.
What are the standard spring rates front and rear? I’m sorry if I missed it if you told us. I can’t seem to find it on their site. Thank you for another good video to refer to when I do my modifications.
The stock Mazdaspeed springs are progressive and differ between generations. The Gen 1 springs are F:188 lbs/in R:171 lbs/in, the Gen 2 springs are actually softer than Gen 1: F:153 lbs/in R: 170 lbs/in. On the 172suspension.com site you can choose Standard Rates from the drop down menu or if you want to go stiffer, select the spring rate from the drop down menu.
The 172s isn't in their lineup anymore. I think they are called the R1 street now: www.raceworkscoilovers.com/product/mazda3/ I don't know if they are the same construction as the 172s, I know the line has changed a couple times since I made this video, so do your research before buying.
In the rear, whats the point of removing the bottom bolt that attaches the sway bar to the the end links? You can simply removing the top bolts from both sides and push the end link with the sway bar out the way. Also I don't really understand why the allen wrench is needed? Can the bolts not be removed without the allen wrench?
You cannot remove the stock end links without the allen key wrench. You will get the bolt loose and then the end link shaft will spin, because its basically a ball end in a cup with grease. The allen key keeps the shaft from spinning so you can get the bolt off. Taking the bottom bolt off is easier because it is the easiest to get to, I can blip them no problem with an impact to get them on/off. I eventually got tired of having to use the allen keys and replaced my end links with a Moog HD (rear) and Massive Speed System adjustable (front) setup. No more allen key wrench needed. The studs on both have faces you can grab with a wrench to keep the shafts from spinning.
Are you using the OEM rear shock suspension bolts??? I'm asking because my 2012 speed3 rear shock bolts have a thick bushing and I noticed that your bolts don't have that bushing
I am waiting on the weather to get warmer here, there is a fair bit that I am going to need to cover as well as some new things that I have learned after owning the coilovers for awhile. Hopefully Mother Nature gets her act together soon!
So ride height on the rear is adjusted by the shock or the spring? I'm guessing the threads on the spring collar is to set spring preload and the threads on the shock is to set ride height?
It took me a minute when I first installed it. The video doesn't show it but I had to take a good 30 minute break and a conversation with a friend to get it squared away.
Sorry for the stupid question. If I want to adjust the height in the rear, do I need to undo the bottom bolt of the shock and the rotate ? It doesn’t seem like there is a way to adjust height without removing that bolt.
I am still loving them! I got the ride height where I wanted and softened up the dampening and it rides great! I finally had to store the car day after Thanksgiving because it snowed ( I don't drive it during winter ), but if you are interested in a set, I would go for it.
These have much better dampening. I can set them stiff for autocrossing, and then set them soft and not rattle my kidneys on the ride home. They are sprung correctly, even at lower ride heights the ride is comfortable, due to the shock valving being mated to the spring. I am still tempted to swap a set of these onto my project Miata, but my wallet would hurt too much lol
@@FiveFiveGarage Thanks for the reply. Do these have a pogo-stick bounce that many coilovers have? I would like to avoid that. Or is the damping nice and taught with good tire grip?
They don't pogo-stick bounce. Getting the dampening settings right helps, and they valve the shocks for the springs. That was one thing I was worried about and was really impressed once I had been driving on them awhile. They also now offer Eibach springs as an option, which I wish was available when I did mine, they keep adding better options! 😄
Yes. Full soft soaks up a lot of the bumps where there is almost no "feedback".It felt kinda floaty to me and full soft doesn't respond as quickly to movement. Middle of the range feels like fresh stock suspension. Full stiff will rattle your fillings out. I tried it and felt every bump, pebble, and sealer snake on the road, lots of feedback. I would not recommend riding around full stiff as a daily. Great for autocrossing or running in the twisties, though.
I order a set about 2 months ago for my ms3 An I haven’t received anything till now They lie to me saying I was gonna get my order in 3 weeks They take for ever to respond emails An when they do nothing but excuses So till now I don’t recommend ms3 owners to buy from RaceWorks Unless you want to go through the same hassle I’m going through
I am sorry to hear that. I too am now having some issues getting into contact with RaceWorks. It is sad that the customer service is lacking, the product is actually good. But I do feel bad for everyone that has problems, I am experiencing issues too.
Five Five Garage I place my order after watching your video You did good you’re putting your name an reputation out there in the mazda community for RaceWorks It’s not right that this company it’s not backing you up on these situations An that’s another think I dislike
I do feel bad about that. I am doing what I can to help people get their orders situated. If there is anything I can help you with, just let me know and I will do my best!
@@bernieanasanchez4861 Hi Bernie. Please get in touch with me at raceworks172@gmail.com - I'd like to learn more about your situation and get you taken care of.
I haven't got side tracked. The rear ride height is adjusted from the spring perch, it has the same locking collars like the front coilover. If you can do the fronts, the rears are easy.
