Rachel’s strength is her storytelling skills. I think it was Colbert who called her the explainer in chief. I became addicted to her show because of her deep dives. If this is the type of work she is doing now I forgive her for stepping down from the daily show. She is essential to our understanding of who we are and where we came from
Truly! I would imagine that, in a world more defined by audio and visual, her ability to reveal *primary source* history, to Gen X and beyond, will be invaluable. She has always dealt with journalism in an ethical and effective way; taking those values into the field of history is a true gift.
@@kristiw.1823 loved how both you and Charlotte worded your comments, thank you! 💙 ethical and effective journalism may save us yet (and voting, of course!)
I’m in awe at how she connects issues past to present. I miss her. Mondays are my favorite day. Ultra and Bagman podcasts should be in history classes. ❤️🙏🏽
Not being able to understand the links, that Rachel explains so perfectly, is simply understanding History! If anyone needs commonsense progress then read more "recent history" say 100 years! There has never been a generation which exploded onto the scene, and big tech seems to have taken over the need to understand anything! Mobile phones can answer any question in an instant, and this alone has meant people do not have to think about anything - just ask Google for an answer! This is the dumbing down of the people because they get answers without needing to understand the LESSON!
I'm weirdly calmed by this podcast when it's pointed out that we've been here before in history and democracy survived....thanks to you both for your deep dive and keep up the good work..fingers crossed and please everyone VOTE!🤞❤👋
What’s interesting to me is the 1940s plot is forgotten to history. Those people thought they were so important but no one knows them. They’re losers. Just like today’s fascists. They’ll be thrown on the dustheap of history as well. No glory for Steve Bannon !
@Juju bean: _...and democracy survived_ What you're missing is WHY it survived: because people like you didn't just voted but became actively intolerant of fascism: if you know anyone supporting the *current* fascist GOP: let them know, inform them.
I love that the Pod has just the right balance between alarm and optimism. You bring guests who express the seriousness of these times and counter the fear with calm resilience and plans of action. Brilliant. Hopeful. Strong.
@@annefitz7346 - there are more people actively “fighting” this nazi movement than you know. Stay strong, use your vote every chance you get, not just general and midterms, but almost more importantly in local elections. Talk to the non-politically aware people you know and encourage them to use their vote too. Show them this video, introduce them to Rachel’s podcast. You can do your part without making a huge effort. There are many more non-fascist people in the US than the ultra-right-wing fascists. Don’t lose heart. ❤
Rachel's history research IS so vital for those that CARE about our future! She teaches me every time I find her work! It's infectious and now I will be watching your RU-vid podcast to learn from you as well. If I have ANY criticism about this pod cast, it's the very long advertisement in the middle of it... I almost thought the show was over...
I have long been a fan of Rachel Maddow’s intellect. I miss her on her daily news channel, but, am excited to know she is out there doing more investigative research and making history known to those of us who went to public schools and never heard about this part of our history. Keep up the good and important work Rachel!
Yes thank you Rachel your knowledge and teaching us how close to the edge we came, you couldn't ask for a better guest! The stuff I'm learning is Simply Amazing!
Hardly she is a part of the corporate machine that promotes authoritarianism that she claims to be fighting against. She is a shill and bullshit-er at that.
I adore this woman. She's so adept at tying things together, providing context and evidence, and explaining them in a way that makes sense to the most ignorant layperson. I understand why she stopped doing her show daily, but I really miss it.
❤Jon Favreau, this is my favorite part of Sunday mornings. I am so glad you’ve carved out this piece of the pie for yourself. All of your interviews have opened me to other thinkers. Many thanks for your good work. You really do make a difference in this country.
What Maddow said in this episode gave me the first little bit of hope I've had in a long time. We've been here before... Depressing, but also gives me hope that we can get past it again.
Let's hope so, especially with all the toxic crap circulating on social media that the tens of millions of Americans who are incapable of critical thinking gob every day ...
Wow! Rachel never fails to bowl me over with whatever she presents. I miss her nightly broadcasts, but with presentations like Ultra we are well compensated.
I appreciate her knowledge, her story-telling gifts, and her tremendous work ethic, but what I appreciate most is that she tells the truth. She doesn't fabricate or spin; she connects the dots and gives the facts. And she can do this because she works so hard to make sure of what she says.
As always Rachel is an amazing speaker. Her delving into history to show us how many times we’ve faced these forces of fascism is pure gold. Jason Stanley’s book, How Fascism Work, is the playbook these strongmen always use. Excellent podcast
It is also wonderful that Jon lets her talk!! No frantic interrupting or completing her sentences. A genuine interview. Real questions and real listening.
Fantastic episode! I am obsessed with the new Ultra podcast series, as usual it is so SO well produced. And Rachel is just…the GOAT. Thanks so much All.
YES! I'm here for every single Maddow interview. Have listened to Ultra episodes twice and still fascinated by just how much of the political history of the 30's and 40's that has yet to be told.
I have listened to the first three episodes of her podcast and they are insightful, informative, and worth listening more than once. It clearly shows her dedication and hard work.
@Lugosi What conspiracy theories are you talking about? And what investigation has proven her wrong and what about? Do you even watch her show or have you read her published work? Rachel doesn't tell you who to vote for, and she certainly doesn't tell people that they're Nazis if they vote Republican. If Rachel is calling you a Nazi, it's because you've self-identified as a Nazi or neo-Nazi. She encourages critical thinking and intellectual curiosity and compassion. You couldn't be more wrong about her.
Rachel has a gentleness in her voice that shows itself in her transition words. She genuinely cares about humanity and our future as human beings. I'm grateful for her insights and humanity.
@@tflg3257 , I guess you will never understand the why and how. Which is so sad, specially because you mentioned that "her own mother couldn't do this", says it all. I am sorry that your own mother didn't love you and thought you are not worthy. Just know that it is not normal and you can love others and others can love you back. You can also change it for your children and show them love, if it is not too late. But I am really sad for you, and the way and how you have lived your life. If you keep watching her try to understand what she says you may start to understand. Try it since you keep watching and commenting on the channel ALL the time......lol
@@KJ-oon That's a novel you wrote. 😒 You should stop deflecting. Fact is, Rachel Maddow is a paid liar. Lying to the public to cover up for the Biden administration is her primary purpose. Manipulating elderly viewers.
I’m not only amazed by her gift as teacher/storyteller, but also appreciate how she chooses to share some glimpses into her own creative process. I miss knowing I could tune into her show every weeknight, but it’s good to see her free to climb down a few rabbit holes of her choosing for a while. I don’t know how many times during her 5-night-a-week gig she’d lead-off by telling us she had to trash her entire day’s work because of some breaking development. (After all, it is a news channel I suppose). There’s gotta be a treasure trove of un-aired material in her back pocket, especially all those little nuggets of overlooked history that she loves to bring out and re-contextualize for us. I look forward to listening to this podcast and to see where she takes us next :-)
@Lugosi Rachel Maddow is a Stanford University Graduate, as well as a Rhodes Scholar Graduate from Oxford University. Her intelligence level is most likely several notches above yourself and many others. As for Russia, they are continually, always trying to take down the USA, just like convincing the OPEC leaders to raise the price of oil along with MBS of Saudi Arabia. But as a Russian troll you probably knew this already 🤣
I really appreciate Rachel and her knowledge. I can’t seem to get enough of her reporting. Thank you Rachel and thank you Jon for having her on your show. Much appreciated.
so glad Rachel did this, my 93 yr old mom had told me about this (she remembered Father Coglin) & i had read some about the pro-fascist Americans pre-WWII but i never get around to looking it up to learn more - Thanks Rachel for doing the work for me! I
Hey!I never comment but, my Dad was the only one I ever heard talking about Father Coughlin. I wanted to say thanks and I am proud of you guys for being as brave as my Dad😊
She is so important to our understanding. I wish college history professors made it mandatory to study her historical research and how to understand current events through the lens of history.
@Lugosi In other words: “I voted as a democrat for years as to hope for a better future until Jimmy Dore, Glenn Greenwald, Matt Taibbi and other demagogues convinced me a more ugly cynical world was the way” Good luck to ya!
Two of my all times favorites come together. I love the two of you. I was distressed when Rachel reduced her time on MSNBC and knew she was going to do new good things. So happy to learn this new story from her. She is so incredibly bright. But then Jon, you are doing great things. I love listening to your handsome face with brilliant ideas.
What about the Million dollars Henry Ford sent to the Nazi party because they ran out of money or the workers he sent to Stalin and the materials also plant manager to get it up and running or his comment that Hitler and Stalin were the two greatest men of the 20 th century
Jon, thank you for having Rachel on again with her in-depth reporting/story telling. Just love me some Rachel Maddow on a Sunday morning while sipping my tea.
love you, Rachel! miss your nightly show on msnbc. you have the ability to present complicated issues in a clear concise understandable way. you're better at it than anyone else I've seen! we need you, rachel. thanks for all your efforts.❤👏🙏
I heard a right wing commentator say that he would rather live in a dictatorship, than have gender reassignment surgery be available to children. It sent chills everywhere. when I listen to you and Rachel I feel hope again for democracy.
Oh my God you are sick Mary page what is wrong with you! He just meant that he doesn’t want his children sterilized and fucked with your whole bunch of pedophiles your son of a bitch motherfuckers
Before people could read, they sat around a camp fire and told stories. Like these two. Nobody knew if it was true or not, because there was nothing that could verify anything the storytellers said. Not true today. You can verify every single word they say. But nobody seems to care.
Thank you, Jon for having Rachel on. I understand why she is no longer on five nights a week, but I do miss that hour of insightful investigation. I've signed up to follow her podcast and will be doing so. Not sure how many more podcasts I can cram into my week and there are times that I say "enough." Great show.
Watching from Aotearoa NZ. Rachel's podcasts are exceptional! 🌻🌷🌻 Both my grandfathers served. That's how I already knew that the USA played both sides during WWII. Only coming on-board after Pearl Harbor. Very frustrating to have spent my entire life hearing USA citizens tell the descendants of Allied Forces that they personally "saved us" and we should bow down to American Exceptionalism. WTF? So VERY thankful for this Ultra podcast ❤ Until my last breath, when I join my Tipuna ( ancestors); I will be recommending this podcast.
Thank you for having Rachel in your show. I became aware of Ultra several weeks ago when she debuted the first 2 episodes. I bookmarked them in my YT feed & have not been able to find subsequent issues. I've searched for them but YT only shows me the first 2. Help me find the "rest of the story."
I agree with you completely. I actually started listening to her during the pandemic and found out a lot of things I had never even thought about because it was never spoken about on the major three networks. She explains it in a way that I was able to understand and she always referenced documents to prove what she was saying. Her deep dives into what is true and what is conspiracy helped me immensely!
Rachel makes history although scary ever so interesting and her way of drawing you into her imagination. Love her way of speaking and her brilliance. 💕💗
strange, ambiguous use of the word "imagination". Good, solid history tends to not be steeped so much in "imagination", but rather in fact however,... whatever ! 🙂
I could listen to her every night and wish we had that back again but i understand she is only one person and has to have limitations for her own preservation but i find her shows or appearances fascinating often times …. I love the guys on Pod Save as well, thank you all for what you do….
OMFG the second you said "I interviewed Rachel maddow".... I was immediately hyped! This is so f****** awesome!! Thank you for all you and the team do!!!
First time listener here👋🏽. Great first listen and have subscribed. I think I'll enjoy this pod! Rachel is such a great storyteller with facts most of us have never learned. Our schools had been dominated by the Daughters of the Southern Rebels for so long. We need to start teaching real TRUE FACTUAL American history. Our true history has been watered down for long enough.
Love Rachel, always worth your time to listen to her. Her investigations always prove to be correct and precedes other news outlets by weeks and months.
Kens burns holocaust documentary has unsettling footage of what the US was like before ww2. It’s just like now. I recommend everyone watching it to understand the political mindset of the time. Keep up the good work.
I found this channel because of Rachel Maddow. I'd be a groupie if Rachel would allow it. 😁 You asked sensible questions and you leveraged Rachel's historical aptitude. I loved it and I am grateful for what you do, Jon.
This is excellent! I’ve listened to her first 3 podcasts and they’re absolutely gripping. Myself and a couple of my friends and family members read quite a bit about American history and these are stories that we’d never heard before.
Thank you Jon and Rachel for this great conversation! Can't wait for the next episode of Rachel's podcast Ultra. It's amazing to learn about history in the USA that I had never heard about or learned at school in the Netherlands.
Same here - I am an avid German listener. Education seems to be the key to prevent the raise of fascism...sadly, access to fact-based education seems to be more and more limited - this podcast helps a lot to fill gaps for those who are genuinely interested and not trolling this comment section! Thanks!
@@davidgoldberg5076 Absolutely, fact-based education is key. I am very worried we are seeing this conspiracy sh*t more and more in the Netherlands too. Just unbelievable.
@@MarcelHuguenin Unbelievable, indeed - with a lack of fact-based education comes a tendency, many to search for "simple "black/white" solutions" that are often offered by authoritarian, protofascist individuals, in Germany represented by the "Alternative für Deutschland, AfD", who admire people like Trump, Putin, Orban, etc.. The solutions that I see to avoid these parties winning the majority, besides education but linked to it, is voting, getting politically involved and discussing with those who are still willing to do so. They must never have the majority of electoral votes. If they do, I might leave the country, if still possible...scary thoughts, though.
I just finished listening to Ultra and Rachel you did absolutely well with it. The music is vibe-riddled but sort of Sherlockian in a way because of the history. Bagman and how she minced and broke down the corrupt world of Spiro Agnew was amazing enough, now this? Damn she's good.
Thank you for this podcast. As a military dependent, veteran and college grad, I feel that history is repeating itself as evidence of this podcast and reports of journalists in our country and the planet. We need to protect our democracy. It is hard education and openness to learning is key here.
So why are so many parents of all ethnic groups showing up at school board meetings and protesting CRT I'm class rooms Listening to Maddow you lose 30 points off your IQ
@@1MarkKeller They are a huge subgroup of these people. Not all of them are willing to promote or participate in sedition. But a significant percentage likely are.
What drives them? Look at the environments these movements grow and listen for what’s behind the hateful rhetoric, the underlying beliefs and emotions. Don’t have to agree or sympathize/empathize, but if you can put your emotions aside to listen, you’ll see the answer is simple. An unstable/precarious economic environment and (real and imagined) threats to their status in society, which they project onto visible minorities who they can scapegoat in order to cope somewhat and avoid facing systemic problems… pretty sure the New Deal had a much much bigger impact in the fight against fasc!sm than the individualistic interventions they discussed… also probably not a coincidence that the threat reappeared and grew proportionally as we gutted those policies
“The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power…. Among us today a concentration of private power without equal in history is growing.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt
You and Rachel are brilliant, I've forwarded this podcast to 20 silent "athourian personalities" that I know, because I think that they can be sincere and made aware.
If people haven’t watched, the PBS documentary called US and the Holocaust, just premiered recently. It’s a three-part documentary that has a tiny bit to do with what they are talking about in this podcast. At least it’s adjacent to this topic and it’s absolutely fantastic. I recommend it to everyone. Ken Burns is the Director and does a fabulous job.
absolutely amazing episode, thank you 🙏 The only discomfort I have that it looks like you (both) put all the blame on regular people who attracted to authoritarianism, but not those who actually brought "ultra" messages into mainstream, whose who heavily finance it, those who get to stay in power by exploiting people's trauma and fears. So, we definitely can use a power of persuasion but a power of consequences weights so much more.
yeah, i wrote a long comment about how the myopic individualistic view prevents them from seeing, or believing, the underlying systemic economic and governmental causes both historically and today... a key reason the interventions they discussed were successful, to the extent that they had any real large-scale impact, was because they came AFTER we started implementing the New Deal, giving average people a sense of security and meaning fasc!sm no longer had anything to offer. unfettered capital!sm, like we've seen since the 80s, is the soil and fertilizer fasc!sm needs to grow. as a country, we have to "pick a poison": a new and improved New Deal (healthcare, student debt, housing, workers' rights, etc) or continued power and control to "m@ga extrem!sts"... or as the slogan goes "s0cialism or barb@rism"
Kudos! Another impressive link to our early days in the 20th Century as well as the current political minefields we see and hear about daily. I'm wondering if the research by Sen. Whitehouse has run parallel with Rachel's in that he has clearly identified what I would consider to be the Catholic leader's (Coglyn's -- sp?) role with the role of Leonard Leo and his Dark Money influence on SCOTUS. While the power structure was Congress in the 1940s (hope I have that right 😶🌫️today) in our time it appears more focus on the Judicial Branch instead of the Legislative. What do you think? Is Leonard Leo the moneyed powerbroker with his ties to his commitment to the Catholic Church comparable?
This is a very good show I wish I had time to watch more, just not feeling so good, in hospital with collapsed lung. I have been dealing with this since the end of May!
Rachel is awesome! She has a unique talent, making complicated issues understandable, relatable and interesting. Too often these topics are made to sound flat, boring and nothing to do with “ordinary people”. The opposite is true. Thank you Rachel. Ps: her new podcast, ULTRA, is awesome! Gripping from the first sentence. Bagman was excellent too.
@@rhondawaters4892 it’s EXCELLENT! I just wish I’d waited till all the episodes were finished, so I could binge listen to them, back to back. Having to wait for the next episode (every Monday) is tortuous, lol.
Very happy with this discussion taking place in America. It was mostly seen as an European ‘problem’ or German ‘problem’. The rise of fascism is so global at this moment. This video is very inspiring to counteract it. Please stay focust on this!
@Lugosi No, calling out fascism when and where she sees it should make everyone re-evaluate their own beliefs to see how vile and fascist these republicans are. She doesn't paint everyone with the same brush, she states well researched facts about specific people. By your reaction, you know deep down how wrong they (you) are.
It’s scary that I’ve never heard of this. Makes me so scared of not knowing exactly what we’re fighting against. I hope by the end of this you tell us how to help in the pro democracy movement.
